When I was a very little girl, about 55 years ago, we (neighborhood friends) would make May Day Baskets out of paper and put flowers (probably dandelions!) in them and hang them on people's doors. Then we would ring the door bell and RUN! i have no idea why we did this and we moved when I was 7 and I can't remember ever doing it in the new neighborhood.

I did May baskets when I was in grade school, made cones out of construction paper and taped a handle on it, filled it with little candies, hung it on the neighbors door knobs rang the bell and ran to hide. I loved it. (OK - this was roughly 40 yrs ago, but still! It was fun!) My son did this once in our neighborhood when he was about 6 - seems like no one knows about it anymore. Too bad - it's a nice thing to do. |

About 10 years ago we received a mayday basket. It was a tradition thing in the neighborhood. The little ones would make small baskets (normally a pretty paper cup with a pipe cleaner handle) with a small plant in it. Usually the plant was just one out of a 6 pack. It was very sweet. One I remember had the saying "April showers bring May flowers" It was very sweet. I know my one neighbor used to take them with her little kids to all the elderly in the neighborhood, and they just loved it!

My kids have done them in the past, and the neighbors love it. We usually use plastic/paper cups with pipe cleaners and then fill with popped popcorn, m&ms etc. I can't remember what happens though if the neighbor catches you. I did this as a kid and it was fun to carry on the tradition.
