When my ds's were this age, they liked the big trucks (plastic or metal)..like dump trucks, garbage trucks, lincoln logs, legos, remote control car (I think my sons had a little tikes remote control car...easy to control), fisher price makes a race track that is a spiral with a handle for carting from room to room.

train tracks train, puzzles, trike,

GEO TRAX... By far one of the most popular and sturdy gifts for a 3 year old. My son got them right after he turned 2 and is 7 now and still gets them out every once in a while.

Cars or trucks. Little boys can NEVER have too many cars/trucks to play with.

Blocks

Stuff to take outside such as golfing set, kids size lawn tools, etc.

I second the Geo Trax and the Shake N Go Cars, my boys and girls all loved these things!
