Anyone trading their car for a more fuel efficient one?

Reading the gas mileage thread got me wondering if people are going to start trading in their cars for more efficent ones????

I get about 18mpg, which I think is pretty decent. I like having a bigger vehicle, but, hate putting so much money into the gas tank, and the emissions isn't very good, either, but, it's paid for and I hate to go to something smaller, and shell out more money for a new vehicle.

Just wondering if anyone has, or is considering, getting a more fuel efficient vehicle??

I would like to. I keep on saying I want to trade my van in for a Prius. Not sure how practical it would be since I cart kids, kids' friends, sports gear and we typically take this van on vacation... Then I thought, if we went on a driving vacation, I could always rent something larger for the trip....

What concerns me about the Prius is the cost to replace the battery. I saw that the battery can cost $6k...that would far exceed the savings I would benefit from the mileage per gallon... So the next best thing would be to get a Corolla, Focus or I heard the VW's get decent mileage...but since it is a small car and there is 5 of us...not sure if it would work for us... Wish they made an affordable van or SUV that got 40 mpg!

I am currently driving a '99 Acura Integra. I'm ready for a new car so I'm looking at Hybrids. The Honda Civic gets about 35 MPG hw I believe, and the Civic Hybrid gets about 10 mpg more than the regular. Plus it's better for the environment.

I'm not. I read an article the other day that talked with a few different dealerships in my area that said they were turning people away who wanted to trade their SUV's in for more fuel efficient vahicles.

There are too many of us, to trade in for a more fuel efficient vehicle. Our Armada doesn't get any different gas mileage then our mini van did, and all of us can fit in it, so we will stick with it. DH has a 67 mustang that is a gas hog, but since he's not driving it, we haven't had to think about it, might be different once he's back.

It just said they weren't selling, so they weren't taking them. It was a bad business move-yeah, they sold a car, but then they had this SUV on the lot that they would have to pay taxes on, etc.

No, but a few years ago, when we decided we needed a new car, DH had his heart set on a full size truck, and I argued until we ended up getting a Corolla. We already had an older SUV that wasn't worth trading in, and I wanted a car that was going to be more fuel efficient. If he wants something, I usually don't argue, so I figured that helped in getting my way. Honestly, I mostly feel guilty about all the gas it takes a car to run, and my commute to work's a lot longer than I'd like. This was just before Katrina, so it ended up being good timing.

We keep both cars maintained, and the SUV is used for when we go hiking, which tends to involve dirt roads. The Corolla's for commuting, and I still cringe at the price of gas, but I know I'm not paying to carry around a lot of metal and fiberglass that I don't actually need. I had considered something even smaller, but we figure this can take car seats, and it is a bit too small for some of our friends. We're both 5'6" or under. The majority of truck/SUV drivers here aren't transporting a lot of people, or farm equipment, or anything, it's just the driver and maybe an iPod. I'd say if you have the option, get a smaller car, but it might not be worth the trade-in.

Not really... our car is paid for so it won't save us any money, I don't think I even put $50/mo in gas in it. And when we do get a newer vehicle it'll probably be bigger since we have 3 kids, not sure how long we can keep them sitting all together.

I get an average of 17/18 with my Magnum so that's good. Our Ford truck only gets 11 but it's paid for an is only driven a max of 20 miles a day. Running the numbers, it would cost us more to trade it in for something else. With the cost of replacement batteries for some of these things, it's not cost effective. Yeah you save on gas but do you save enough to pay for the new battery in a few years? I don't think most people would...

Hi we bought a Prius almost a year ago and love it. Just want to let you know they have an excellent warrenty on the battery. Taken directly from their warrenty info:
"Hybrid-related components for hybrid vehicles are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty"

We traded our Expedition in at the end of the year because I knew gas prices were just going to keep going up... We have 3 almost 4 kids(2 1/2 more months!) and need something roomy, so we got a Honda Odyssey. Good move on our part!

I would trade mine in a heartbeat. But, I don't want a car payment. So until I find someone willing to buy me a more efficient car I will stick with what I got. LOL

I traded a year ago when gas prices were starting their uphill climb. I went from a minivan to a mid size SUV that gets about 3 MPG better gas mileage.

I like my 2001 civic. I get between 30-35 mpg, it seats five and runs like a top (and has been paid for a very long time)
Dh's truck is another story

Nope, all our vehicles are paid for. We have a van, a mid size car and a little Cavalier. We were thinking about getting a new car this summer, but with the economy the way it is we are going to hold off for awhile and see what happens. We weren't planning on trading anything in anyway even if we do buy a new car.

I have an Explorer and I am not trading it in. I think I am doing alright though because we dont drive it unless we have to and I only drive 1.8 miles to work so a tank of gas lasts a LONG time.

We just traded in our Honda Pilot for the Prius and we love it! We have traveled almost 4000 miles in the last month (3 kids in college w/sporting events) and we average 49 mpg--we had @20mpg w/the Pilot. I put $32 of gas in and it lasts almost two weeks (over 500 miles on the road trips). It is the best decision we made.

We actually did about 5 years ago. DH got a job about an hour away and the gas in the GMC pickup was so much we actually save money by having a 3rd car for him to drive only to work. We buy older Saturns and only pay about $500- $900 and they last a couple years and then we get $150 for junking them and buy another used one. At the time we saved over $100 a month by having the extra car now it's probably more like $300 a month in gas saved by not driving it. We still have the truck because we use in a lot around the house and just couldn't do without a truck but usually I drive my 12 year old Mitsubishi.

I bought a new car, a Honda, last month. Needed an extra vehicle, so son will have vehicle to use. It was very easy to get a deal since sales are extremely slow now. The gas mileage is better, plus it's fun to drive.

We have a Honda Pilot which I absolutely love. I get about 24 mpg with it but it has 93K miles on it. I wanted to get something that I can use on a daily basis for going back and forth to work 7 miles each way, running errands, etc. DH has a Ford F-150. Both are paid for and that is nice. We decided to buy a 2005 Ford Focus standard. I like it. Usually it is just myself or 1 or both of the girls. (Having 4 kids, it is hard to get used to having only 2 at home now and not needing a big vehicle!) The focus should get close to 40 mpg. I hope so. We just did this last week.

someone was telling me the other day they had tried to trade their explorer and was told by the place they wanted to trade that they were not taking any more big suv's cause they couldnt sell them .
I am just glad I got my echo when I did. 41 miles to the gal and the price of the little , gas saving cars has really gone up since I traded.
