Broken TV question

Hi. I have a question about my TV. I hope its ok to post it here. The other night the screen went black but we could hear it ok. I turned it off. The next day I tried it, it did the same thing. So I wiggled the cords in the back. It "popped", the sound went off too and it smelled like it was burning. It is a Philip Magnavox. I think its about 25" and about 9 years old. Any ideas?? Is it worth getting it looked at? It cost $15 to take it to the local repair shop & have it looked at. However, as of 2009 don't I have to get some converter box thing anyway?? Im so confused. Please tell me what you think? Should I bother getting it looked at. How much should I be willing to put into it?? TIA. Your advice is appreciated. For what its worth my dh says tv's are disposable these days & to pitch it. He's not as "frugal-minded" as myself.

If that was me, and I smelled something burning...I would not repair it. It is 9 years old and the cost of getting to the repair place and back and forth plus the cost to have it looked at and repaired, would probably exceed the value of it. I would look for some sales on a replacement.

I don't know about repairing, But I'm like the above posters, if I smell something burning, then it's time for me to get a new one, because even if gets repaired, I would be forever checking it to see if smelled like it was burning.

If I had to guess, it sounds like the picture tube went bad. They are NOT cheap to replace, and will cost you almost the same as what you would pay for a new set. If it were still under warranty, obviously yes fix it, but being 9 years old it wouldn't be worth it.

With flat screens getting more common, you might want to take a look at Craig's List. Obviously, you're okay with a 25" CRT, but someone who isn't is going to have to fund their giant plasma purchase somehow, and get rid of their older TV.

I say replace it and don't spend any more time worrying about the possibility of a fire hazard.

You might want to look into find a store that has a "no interest for 12 or 24 months" policy on a purchase of a new tv. You will then have that time to pay it off if you don't have the money upfront--and end up paying no interest.

Converter box is only needed if you use an antenna for TV viewing. If you use cable or satellite, you will not need the box.

However, high definition might be a good idea since that is what all programming will be in and the screen is more of a widescreen shape.

This is how I understand it, anyway.

Personally, I'd buy a new TV.
