Question Help with info on self-tanners or spray tan

Fellow MCers

My DD is going to her Senior Ball this weekend and wants to be tan. However, I really don't want her to go to a tanning booth as I don't want her doing damage to her skin. She rarely "tans" by sitting in the sun, as she doesn't want to cause future sun damage to her skin. However, she wants to be tan for her Ball. Do any of you use any self-tanners that you would recommend highly or conversely, have any of you experienced the "spray on" tans (the ones that I see on Dancing with the Stars don't look at all "healthy" to me unless you think a particular shade of orange is natural and healthy looking). I do understand her desire to have some color to her skin for this dance, but I don't really want to promote sitting under a cooking lamp to achieve that look. Any information/help/suggestions offered will be greatly appreciated!

TIA

I tan easily. I have tried the self tanners and they make me orange. I would reccomend a spary on tan. The tans looks real and not orange.
Usually the self tanners take a few aplications to show any tan. You have to be careful on your elbows, knees and other place that get alot of abuse. If she is going the self tanner route. I suggest to exfolate her body before. That does help to get a natural looking tan. I think the spran on tans from a salon is the way to go.

I love tanning beds. I tan so fast just 3 trips and I am very dark. It also depends on the lotion you use.

Good Luck

I recently tried Toni Brattins Secret Tan. The reviews were great on this product. I found the odor to be very strong (although the reviews stated there was no odor). It did give me a tan after a few applications. I have come to realize that you need to use it often (daily) in order for the tan to remain. It faded after a few short days. I am planning on using it again this week to give it another try.
I was faithful to tanning beds until last year. One person I know died from skin cancer, and another was diagnosed. Although I love the feeling of being tanned, and I also love being able to relax in the bed, it just isn't worth the risk. After the research I have done, tanning beds are very dangerous. I haven't heard much about spray tans, but it sounds like that might be a good idea for your daughter....

I have done a spray tan and the salon several times - it is really quick and easy...you can go many shades of tan (from barely to scary) and I have never had it come out orange. I would say to do it at least one day, but ot more than three or four before the event if you want it to look its best. Keep in mind WATER is the enemy - the more water or chemicals the faster it will leave - ie: hots tubs are out if you don't want to go in tan and come out white! (Keep that in mind for shower or pool use - pools will be worse because of the chemicles).

I have a question about the spray than, if I may. I am a die hard tanning bed user. I am trying to get out of the habit. (I have depression and I swear it helps me feel better.) Anyways, does someone spray you or does a machine? I personally would be way to embarassed to have someone spray me because I don't like tan lines, if you get my drift.

Laura,

In my past life we went to clothing optional beaches, so I wanted an all over tan as well. I went to places that the machine sprays you - it takes like 30 seconds and then you wipe down with towels and try to spread to areas that may not get it based on the way you stand. You would also want to go without any jewlery.

PS: About the depression, I might be off base, but I had heard it was the lights of tanning that helped that - and with the spray tans there are no lights - just a dark clostet like stand up booth.
