I gotta brag on my DS

DS Stefan has a fine visual motor skill delay dysgraphia and an accomadative insufficiency so he struggles with his handwriting and some fine motor skills and some co-ordinations issues such as balance.

We have been trying for years to get him to ride a two wheel bike and he has not been able to master it and at 9 yrs old he still has had to use training wheels. Last summer when we went with Grammie, Aunt Theresa, Auntie Alice and my Niece and Nephew and possible future adopted nephew Travis to Myrtle Beach. Theresa said bring his bike forget the training wheels and Shelly, Michael, Travis and I will have him riding by the end of the week, Well it didn't happen by the end of the week we had one busted tail-light, scraped knees and a child who never wanted to see his bike again.

This child has not touched that bike since August of 2007, yesterday after he helped paint the deck with his friend Tyler and had dinner. Tyler and Junior came over on their bikes and wanted him to go riding with them he said sure we said hang on let us put your training wheels back on. DS Stefan said no let me try this by myself. Well I cringed and didn't want to look but I watched as he pedaled 2-3 times and then lost his balance put his foot on the ground all the time Tyler and Junior were encouraging him on, he did this about 3 more times and then bamm that child was gone off like a lightening bolt and did not turn back, he was riding that bike without training wheels all by himself with no help from us. He was wearin his helmet told us he would wear it so and I quote " I dont scramble my brains if I fall" We are so proud of him OMG I honestly never thought I would see the day when he would ride a bike, my cousin has the same problem dysgraphia etc and he didnt ride a two wheeled bike until he was 11... now if only we can get Stefan to learn to tie his shoes that would be so wonderful as his feet grow its getting harder to find shoes you don't have to tie.

I am so proud of my little man, called Grammie, Call my mom and they are both proud it was my Mom and Dad who bought him the bike for Christmas in 2006 and now finally its getting some use.

I'm proud of him too. Not only did he get back on the bike and try again he just learned a HUGE life lesson! Keep trying buddy and you will get it! Congrats to your little guy. I know what it feels like when they do something a "typical" child can do without any effort it's such an amazing feeling!

Carrie you should see him now he is riding over the speed bump over and over and over again almost like jumping it and I keep yelling don't do that you'll get hurt and he yells back "Mom I know what I'm doing Tyler taught me and I have my helmet on so I wont scramble my brains" OMG its priceless If only I could figure out that video camera DH got me in 2006 for Christmas I would be out there video taping him. I worry so because he is in shorts and a tank top and and if he takes a spill I just don't want an ER visit this weekend before DH's surgery on Tuesday, as you all know I am not too fond of hospitals.

I am so proud of him !!!

I have a son with dysgraphia also, and I know how hard a lesson this is, and what a reward this is also. Congrats and big hugs!

My DD has this problem too, and at almost 10 still can't tie her shoes or ride a bike. Your post brought a tear to my eye - thanks for sharing this important milestone.

That's the kind of success that will encourage him to take a bigger step on something else. Congratulations to him and to you for having the courage to watch!
