Question Raffle Tickets

My husband and I bought a newer truck (better on gas and family fits better)...and we are trying to sell our old truck. We have had some interest, but not enough interest to sell it yet (been up for sale almost a month). When we sell the old truck, we are going to pay down on the new loan and get a shorter loan/smaller interest...so time is of the essense.

We do live in a smaller town so not much traffic in our neighborhood. We currecntly have signs posted around town, signs in the truck, we are using craigslist along with autotrader.com and cars.com

We are thinking of holding a raffle on the truck. Sell tickets of $10 each and keep the raffle open for a month. We would like to get a total of $4500 or so for the truck and are looking at 450 tickets that need to be sold.

What are your thoughts? Please don't flame me...just trying to ask for other ideas or thoughts. I have checked in our county and can not find a law against it...most are for non-profit organizations.

Maybe a call to your local city hall to make sure that it would be alright?

* I THOUGHT* that a raffle is sorta like gambling...so you'll have to look up gambling laws ?

There is a woman in Ocala Florida doing an essay contest/raffle (with a $200 entry fee) to sell her house!

I know that Texas has a law that you have to pay income taxes on "prize" winnings like this. I'm not sure about where you are, but you may want to look into it.

We are thinking taht we would sell them on e-bay along wiht other online places...and then we are having a yard sale (all of our neighbors are partaking in the yard sale), so we are hoping this will bring lots of interest. The truck is worth $6000 but we have it listed for $5500 right now...

We know that by doing this, we are taking a risk that we won't make much money. But we are also hoping that we will get enough out of it that it is worth it. We just want to make a huge payment on our new truck and get it off of our insurance.
