Medical Coding test

I passed!

I can't believe it. The test was hard. There were 4 girls out of 12 in the testing class that had taken it before, they all said it was harder then the previous year. When we walked out of the testing location, I had pretty much accepted I failed, but I was still proud - proud that I went through it, completed it and did very well in class.

I actually had a couple of tears and some shaky knees. I'm looking at the results and I STILL can't believe it, heh!

Congratulations.

Just wondering if you could post one or some of the questions??? I used to process medical claims, and I really enjoyed it, and learned a lot. I see lots of jobs in the paper for this, too, so it must be very marketable. I had no idea you had to take a test for it.

No, I couldn't remember one of the questions on it to save my life. It's a national test from what I understand. You get the test on the day you're there, you take it, then it's sealed and sent back in.

You don't HAVE to take the test. This test sort of came with the class package I paid for. The end result was to try and become a certified coder.

Many people have been coding for years with no education or testing, but I think more and more places are wanting it. I know some places that are paying for their people to become certified - OR - offering incentive of a higher pay scale if you take the course and become certified.

After taking all this, it BLOWS my mind that folks do this and have been doing it with nothing but on the job training. I would think some type of formal education would be a must, even just to get through learning the procedures and concepts of coding.

I was processing Medicare claims. We did get sent to a "class" which was about 6 weeks long I think, at my place of employment. I found it very interesting, and still use that knowledge to this day. It also comes in handy when helping friends/family on Medicare.

You don't even have to take a class. It's an easy thing to learn on the job. I used to do it before I went to nursing school.

More places are wanting the coding certificate. My sister works at a hospital and the medical records department is encouraging their folks to take the course and get the cert, even those that have been with them for 10-15 years.

Heh, not sure how "easy" it is anymore. From what I understand it gets more complicated every year. My instructor has been in the business for 20 years and she tells me it's changed a lot since she started. I've heard a couple folks say they hope to be retired before they have to learn the ICD-10.

My BIL is an ortho surgeon, he uses 120 codes. Someone he works with uses 4 codes. That would be easy!
