I think prices vary - I'll give you the prices I see locally. Even these vary!

Disney VHS movies - anywhere between $1.00 and $3.00

Adult Hardcover books - $1.00 - 2.00 (unless a recent best-seller, or an Oprah's bookclub pick - then probably $3.00+ (depends on condition)

Adult Softcover -.25 or .50 (or more - depending on condition)

Kids chapter books - 2/$1.00 or 3/$1.00

shoes - I always find that we don't get much for these - possibly $2.00 a pair? You might get more to sell to resale or consign.

I hope I didn't discourage you - like I said - I think this can be regional - and even vary within different neighborhoods in a particular region.

Good luck!

Before you sell the Disney VHS, check the prices of what you have on eBay. When I went to put some in our thrift sale last year, I checked eBay first and found out that we have some more valuable ones like an early Little Mermaid and a couple others. I think I got $20-$25 each for those on eBay. The rest I sold in our Thrift Sale, and they didn't go very well at a couple dollars each. I ended up donating most of them to a homeless shelter.

Good luck on your sale. I would rather scrub the school toilets than have one around here. If the people aren't offering you .10 for everything you have, they are stealing it while their friend distracts you asking about prices on things over and over again. It's brutal!

hardcover books: $1 each
softcover books .50 each or 3/$1
kids chapter books same as soft cover above
kids reg. books: .25 to 50 each
shoes: $1-$2 a pair but they don't go well. I've done better when I had the original box
VHS: used about $2 each. They might yield more on ebay but you have to gauge if you want the hassle

price in .25 increments. It minimizes your change. If it's not worth .25, put it in a FREE Box

I agree with the price ranges posted above. However, it's been my experience that you can often squeeze more dimes and nickels out of people than you might imagine. And, at the end of the day, those dimes and nickels add up! In other words..... Suppose you have an item that you're inclined to price 50-cents, try 65-cents instead. A lot of people will not try to talk you down. But, some people will ALWAYS try to talk you down. (That's part of the joy of yard sales for them.) When they offer less, it's usually the price you were going to mark it to begin with. (50-cents) Instead of $1.50, ask $1.70.... instead of $2.00, ask $2.35.... and so forth. You can easily add a few extra dollars to the outcome this way. Even $10+ depending on how much stuff you sell. Plus, it also eases the sting when you sell some other items for less than what you had hoped to get.

As far as shoes, sorry.... You may have paid $25-$60 for them new, but unfortunately, you're lucky if you get more than $2 for them at a yard sale (no matter how minimally worn they are).

Shoes never sell well for me. And it seems like always, whatever I think will sell, won't. But the things that I started to not even put out, first to go. You just never know! Good luck!!

My SIL lives in South Florida and she told me all about the hagglers and thieves down there. She said there are some of the cheapest people you will ever meet down there. She found out she had to watch everything when she had her sale.

I love garage sales. I am an avid shopper of them and find lots of great deals there. I just had a thought on your vhs's - I agree with the above poster to make sure they are not collectors items, but I think that $1 - $3 for a VHS is too high. Most people have switched over to DVD format and the people who still have VHS are looking to replace their old tapes or finding new titles. My Hollywood Video has used videos on sale a lot and the DVD's are $4 - sometimes cheaper!

I agree with mitcham - before you price your disney movies check for the going price on eBay. Some are still collectables, even though they are VHS. Especially if you have the original Little Mermaid when it was first put out.
