Finally... a reason to be glad that we do not have direct deposit and to be honest, this is WHY we do not have direct deposit!

Still waiting here.

Leave it to govt to screw up this bad.

To be honest, making a mistake like this with paper checks would be just as bad.

I'm sure they can cancel the transactions or reverse them. If it were paper, I doubt they could wait or rely on folks to send them back. They'd have to cancel them all.

Seems hard (and careless!) if it were done either way.

So this can happen even with paper checks and not just on direct deposit. Mistakes happen both ways. I would think having it happen on a paper check would be a lot worse as the other poster said. Having to cancel the checks and then re-issue them to be sent out could take weeks or months to do verse direct deposit would be a lot quicker.
