My tooth cracked!!!!

OH man, don't eat hard candy when you get old like me!!! I was eating a butterscotch disk and 1/4 of my bottom molar cracked off all the way down to the gum line. It already has a lot of fillings in it. I sure hope they can save it. I will be calling the dentist on Monday and making an appt. I am one of those people who are soooooo scared of the dentist. I guess it has to do with the memories of the old slow drills when I was a child getting fillings with no novacaine. Plus no flouride back them. Kids are so lucky today!!!!! I bet I've had about 40 cavaties or refills in my almost 51 years. Now it's time (hopefully) for crown #3!! Wish me luck and say a prayer! Thanks!

That happened to me as well, it was one of those fillings I've had since the late 60's-early 70's. It was huge and there was more filling left than tooth when it cracked.

Don't wait, you can probably get a crown without a root canal as long as its just the tooth. DH waited on one of his, and he had to get a root canal AND a crown.....$$$$$$$

My dentist did call me back early Sunday morning. He thinks he can save the tooth as long as the root is ok. Hopefully it is. It will cost around $750.00 and I have no dental insurance BUT Friday I found out I got my $600.00 rebate depostied in my checking accounty so I guess George Bush is buying me a crown!! lol

Cute avatar Toonces.

I feel for you OP. The exact same thing happen to me. It's a molar that I've had refilled about 4 times since I was a kid. The tooth was weak because there's so much filling in it and about 1/4 of the tooth broke off when I was eating Raisin Bran. Even with insurance it's going to cost me $500-$600! Just don't stress yourself out about going to the dentist and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Thanks!!! I get panic attacks so it's being "trapped" in the chair that bothers me the most! I have quite a few teeth that have been filled and refilled many times. As my son told me, some of your teeth are blue!! THey are so full of fillings! (Molars in the back.) I'm sure as I get older it will happen more often!!! But I have to keep it in perspective. It's not that bad, Things could be a lot worse!!!

I just had a crown done this past month. 2 words - laughing gas! Seriously it just kinda takes you away. And I also took along my MP3 player and headphones - better than hearing that drilling - I was lost in my own little world.

Yes, I've been taking headphones for years. It does help! I tried laughing gas once for my wisdom teeth extraction and I didn't like it. I made them stop and we went with the novacaine. Thanks for the suggestion though. Also, I get a discount if I pay on the day so I will only have to cough up about $90.00 out of my pocket. Thanks George for the $600.00. I'll take a good deal on my dental work too! lol

Oh man, I'm so sorry. Does it hurt much? It sux that you have to use your $600 on your tooth, but I guess it's better than putting it on a CC and paying interest. Hope everything goes well!
