Send off to Iraq?

My 10 yr old daughter's best friends mom is being sent to Iraq for a year in a week. They are having a big gathering tomorrow to say goodbye. I'd like to have my daughter bring her a gift of some sort, but i am having problems coming up with something. Since it is tomorrow morning, I don't really have time for anything crafty. I thought about care package stuff (phone cards, chap stick, the usual), but I'm not sure if she can even bring that with her on the trip over? Any ideas? I'd really like it to be something meaningful since the mother is very nice to my daughter, and a wonderful mother.

Do you think maybe some coupons or something for the daughter to spend time at your house or with you while the mom is gone? So she knows she'll still be surrounded by friends? Dunno. That's what I'd want.

the care package would be great! my grandson just got back for the second time and really liked the phone cards, and all the rest of the stuff you listed and I would also add some personal coupons as jaded suggested to make the mom in her feel better about being away!

I would think that she can only bring so much w/ her at this point. Why don't you give her a card and let her know that care packages will be sent during her deployment period. Perhaps you could organize a pen pal list, or come up w/ a group to adopt her unit and send personal care items on a regular basis. She sounds like a very special person! I wouldn't mind being added to the penpal or care package list. If you would like to shoot me a PM w/ her info, I would be happy to send something out.

This all sounds like a super idea.

I was going to suggest a card with the promise of care pkgs. being sent periodoically but Linnybop beat me to it and added even more great suggestions as well.

A little late here, but I think the penpal idea is super! If you don't feel like writing a lot, cards or postcards can be used and mean so much! Also maybe you take pics of the daughter and do a little something with it to send the Mom.
Will keep her in my prayers!
