Dog with pet food allergies....

I'm at my wit's end with our dog. I am looking for a good quality dog food that someone has tried for their dog.

Thank you.....

You haven't said what your dogs allergies are so its hard to recommend something that might help.

I have used Innova and Merrick.

I am guessing it is her dog food. That is what I want to change first, anyway. She is on flea meds, so it is not fleas.

I've been feeding Eagle Pack Holistic Duck and Oatmeal and been quite pleased with it. It's only available in specialty pet stores here although I think the larger chain stores carry the non-holistic Eagle Pack.

My foster mom used Flint River Ranch food for one of her cats who was allergic to almost everything and was also getting allergy shots, I think even though her furbaby is gone that was allergic she still uses it for her others

Website Flint River Ranch Super Premium Cat Food and Dog Food

They used to offer free samples and free shipping.

My vet was at her her wit's end trying to find a diet for my allergic to most foods dog. I finally found Go Salmon and Oatmeal kibble (about $45 for a 30 lb bag). He's been on it for over a year (we add pumpkin mash and any leftover cooked veggies to his kibble) and recently was at the vet's for his yearly checkup. She was blown away at how fabulous he's doing since this food. His coat is shiny, eyes bright, no hot spots, paws and ears healed, and has not been on prednisone or any other meds for his allergies since he began eating this stuff. Vet even had the poor dog on Prozac to try and stop some of his scratching, biting hotspots, etc. His personality became soooooooo much more mellow once we finally found the right food for him.
It's pricey, and this dog is a big ole St. Bernard mix, so he goes through the food quickly. Then again, we also feed it to our Malamute/Siberian mix, so it would last longer if only one dog ate it.
Compared to his vet bills for the past coupla years, it's a deal.

I had a German Sheppard once that was allergic to the wheat in the dog food, he was also allergic to fleas and grass, so we had an indoor German Sheppard, LOL, he only went outside to use the bathroom, he hated being outdoors. We used a rice and lamb dog food, it was years ago, but I am thinking it was Science Diet, but not positive. You can ask your vet to give you some samples or maybe your pet store has sample bags, we used to buy his food at a pet store and they had the little sample bags of food you could take home and try first. They gave us a bunch of different ones to take home and try. Or you could cook your own, like rice and boiled chicken or something like that, just for a few days to see if he gets any better with the itching or whatever the problem is.

Our poor dog used to suffer allergies really bad, He was so bad he was on monthly injections to help the itch and inflamation. We tried everything from holistic natural foods to raw diets. The only food he could eat without throwing him into a awful itchy spell was ZD diet. You get it from the Vet it is specifically for allergies. It is pretty expensive $50.00 for 24lbs I believe is what we paid but it was worth it as it stopped the itch.

edited to change door to dog lol.

We feed Bianca a mixture of ground turkey, brown rice and veggies. I cook up some every three or four days and keep it in the fridge. She is very healthy and it is chemical and additive free. You might want to try that. Also I have seen in the health food stores all kinds of canned and dry foods that are vegan, organic, and other such mixtrues. You might try there.

Did you google it?

When our Bulldog wouldn't stop itching we took her to the vet, and we did the great food switch for several months before we found one that worked, It was Hills Prescription Diet. We used the one with Deer meat in it. Something you need to watch is what treats you give. Cinnamon was missing her treats very badly so we got some deer meat from a friend and made jerky (YUCK!) She loved it.

You can ask your vet to give your dog a cortisone injection and a course of predisone to go along with the dog food. I tell you that shot was a miracle. Within a hour after he got the shot the itching stopped. Then he had time to adjust to the new food.

If he ever got really bad with the itching we used to call and get him another injection to take the edge off it always worked and was such a relief for all of us. When he itched we would constantly tell him stop itching and chase him around with sprays and such to put on the areas he was scratching. It wasn't his fault and we always felt bad.

We did the whole route to of allergy testing, special shampoos, special diets, skin vitamins you name it we tried it and the only combo that worked for us was the ZD and a occasional Cortisone injection.

We lost our poor dog in Feb to a brain tumor. What I wouldn't give to have to put up with the itches and vet visits again just to have him back.

Totally agree about the treats. I had a vet tell me that one tiny piece of something they are allergic to can trigger a reaction. My cocker mainly gets baby carrots or dried duck jerky (Quackers). I also give him pieces of apple or banana and other fruit but nothing containing grain or corn. He honestly will eat anything and particularly loves mandarin oranges

Also agree that it will take a long time to narrow down what will agree with your pet.

I also forgot to mention about the treats. No store bought treats. What the vet told us to give our dog and he loved it was frozen baby carrots and green beans. To him they were just like cookies. On special occasions but not often we would give him chicken strips but we had to be careful with those as well because even those would make him itch.

Our Newfie/Lab mix developed seasonal itching and even hair loss. Every year, we headed to the vet to see what was wrong with him, paid for testing each time and each time it was an "I don't know".

I finally changed his food about four years ago to Purina One for Sensitive Systems with Yogurt and VOILA!!! He has never had a problem since!

I highly recommend you try this formula, it is WONDERFUL!!! (and a lot cheaper than some of the other fixes).

I am currently using Natural Balance by Dick Van Pattern (potato and duck). My dog is allergic to air it seems. I have just started her on this, it has been about 3 weeks. My vet said you have to do the food trial for at least 8 weeks before you decide if it works. Our vet has had many clients use this food with success. This food is bought at the regular pet food store. Our vet also recommends a VERy pricey stuff that is sold only in the office but she said this one is very similar, I like this because it also has treats that go along with the food that are the same ingredients. Here is a excerpt from the natural Balance website that states the information nicer than i can:

Natural Balance® Limited Ingredient Diets™ Sweet Potato & Venison Dry Dog Food is our New Formula made specifically for dogs and puppies prone to allergies. This Grain-Free Dry Formula is also made in Venison & Sweet Potato Canned Formula and Sweet Potato & Venison Treats for a complete allergen free diet!

Natural Balance® Potato & Duck Dry Dog Food is our special Allergy Formula, made specifically for dogs and puppies prone to allergies. See some Testimonials on our Potato & Duck Formula!

P and D Small Bites™Along with our Duck and Potato Canned Formula and Potato & Duck Treats, dogs with allergies can now have a complete allergen-free diet!

If you're feeding raw, that requires feeeding raw meaty bones, correct?

I feed Scout Iams. She loved the puppy food (smaller chunks) and now the Iams adult comes in smaller chunks...she liked the regular chunks ok, she just prefers the smaller chunks which she loves as well. Our previous dog was an Iams doggie too.
