Field Days

My son had his 4th grade 'field day' today at school. It isn't that he didn't enjoy it or win anything, but what happened to having actual relay races, tug-of-wars, things like that? Today they had contests like walking with an eraser on their heads, popping water balloons by sitting on them, and throwing frisbees. I'm surprised they couldn't have had a mix of activities. My son and a few of his friends made comments that these were kindergarten games. I kind of have to agree. What do other people think?

My DDs field day is in 2 weeks but they do pretty much the same thing every year -- traditional games like three legged races, tug of war, sack races, etc. Someone new has taken over the planning this year and I've heard talk that the events will be different. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

We do a mix of them. I think they had about 16 stations. My daughter (5th grader) loved it. It also includes 3 or 4 water stations to get them wet if they want. This year they ended field day with a 5th grade versus staff kickball game. It was a huge hit!

Our field day is coming up in a couple of weeks. At our elementary school, they have relay races, high jump, cross country runs, tug of war, dashes, and other events like that. The kids LOVE it!

My daughter's school still does a lot of the traditional field day activities...they take up about half the day. The other half of the day the kids get to play on the bounce houses they rent. They ask each child to earn $4 to go towards the rentals if they can. This year they had quite a few more than they've had the previous years...like 8 or 9 of them.

Last year they tried to incoporate some inside activities to give them a break from the heat but I don't think they went over very well. I think kids see field day as a day of fun activities and lots of running around. The indoor activities involved too much thinking. LOL

When I was in elementary school, we did all the traditional field day activities and they gave out ribbons for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place. My daughter's school doesn't do ribbons or anything to recognize the winners.

My DS field day was on Thursday...they had a mix of games from, tug-of-war, musical chairs, three-legged race, water relay races, face painting your partner, egg toss, and some others that weren't as much of a hit but took up time. All grades did the same activities, even though some were geared for the younger grades, but I am sure the 4th and 5th graders rather be outside goofing off then inside doing work. None of the kids win ribbons, but everyone received a participation goodie bag filled with candy, stickers, pencils, school dollars and such donated by local businesses. They have gone to the zoo, community trips, Cape Henlopen State Park and next Tuesday going on a boat for Dolphin Watch. I swear the last two weeks of school are just a carousel of fun activities for the kids....they stopped getting homework a week ago.
