We had bakery cakes for our dds' firsts. We asked them, though, to make a small cake just for the birthday girl so she could have her own, decorated in a similar fashion as the one for the rest of us. It was so sweet to see the little tiny birthday girl with a little tiny cake all her own! (And the bakery gave them to us free!)
In subsequent years we've done a lot of easy cakes, including the bunt pan cut in two to make a caterpillar -- that one was a hit because the birthday girl could help put on m&m spots all over the caterpillar. Other favorites included lots of different things to do with cupcakes (anything that you can design with circles you can do with cupcakes!)
Whatever you decide, take lots of pictures and have fun!!

I made a sheet cake for guests, heart shaped cupcakes for kids, then a larger heart shaped cupcake for Faith to have her own last year. I don't suppose Max would like hearts, but you could use other shapes. I always made a smaller cake for my other kids too so they could do whatever they wanted to their won cake. So much fun!!! They used to have small microwave cakes and that's what I used with my grown kids and their first birthdays. They were the perfect size.

Have fun!! What a terrific milestone. Welcome to toddler hood!! llol

several of the grocery stores will throw in a little 1st b-day cake for free w/ the purchase of a larger one. I also think the cupcake tiers are very cute.

Are you planning to make this yourself?

The magazine Family Fun always has a lot of great ideas on their site. They had a cake that looked like the game board from Candy Land. It was so cute and looked pretty easy to do, but it would take a lot of time. I also got a free 1st birthday cake for both of my children from my local grocery store.

I agree with checking out Family Fun Magazine if you are wanting to make a cake yourself. My little guy just turned one and I made him the crown cake (actually geared for a princess but I just changed the colors). I is a cake with cookie shapes around the outside to look like a crown. Good luck and enjoy the special day!

Kind of off topic, but I have a suggestion. A friend of mine did the cutest thing when her daughter turned one. They baked a huge 3 tier chocolate cake with pink frosting and sprinkles, put their little girl in pink bloomers (to cover her diper) and put a party hat on her. The covered the floor with white sheets, and hung another white sheet as a backdrop. They put the kid on the floor next to the cake and grabbed the camera. The shots that they got were some of the coolest pictures I've ever seen.....her discovering frosting, her sitting in the cake, ect. Might be fun....

How about incorporating the gift (toy) into the cake decorations? We did this for my 2nd ds. He was getting a tub toy (a stick on the wall toy that was disney theme, toy had a slide, swing etc.). I decorated the cake to look like a pool and used the toy with the characters for the decorations. It turned out really cute. Everyone loved it. Good luck with whatever you do. Please don't stress too much about this and just enjoy the day.

For my ds' first birhday (since his favorite song at the time was Old McDonald) I had a friend do an Old McDonald cake. it was precious. She even made a barn on top of it out of graham crackers. it hsd a corral with a horse in it, and there were cows and pigs and of course, a dog.

I would like to make the cake myself. I like the idea of incorporating some toys into the cake....that is too cute! I love the CandyLand idea but couldnt find the darn cake on Family Funs website. Ive been cruising websites and not finding too much. Any websites with pictures? I also am thinking of starting some sort of collectible collection that I can add to each birthday? Not Precious Moments...no offense but those lil figurines creep me out. LOL. I will check Hallmark because they seem to be the place for collectibles. i want to also get a blank book and have friends and family add their thoughts and wishes for Max and it will be something I can put back for him for when he is older. Thinking of getting a plate too that will be the "birthday plate" that will be the one we use each year to hold the cake. Can you tell I am a lil excited?

Most boys like playing with cars/trucks etc. You could make a racetrack around the cake with a finish line marked "1 year old". Or you could just make a road winding around the cake. Put a few hotwheels on top, or some other type of small car. If you did the racecar theme, you could decorate the top with a track, and the sides with some kind of scenery, maybe checkered flags or lights or some other nascar symbols. I just googled Nascar cake, and all kinds of pictures popped up that you could reproduce on your cake.

I'm so sorry, I lied to you. The Candyland cake was in my Taste of Home Magazine.

You may want to go to a local craft store (I know Hobby Lobby has them and Michaels) and get a Wilton Cake Decorating book. I have gotten many ideas from there. Good Luck.
