I saw that, too, but don't think it was as dramatic as it seemed. Wait. That didn't sound right! They showed what happened in slo-mo, and it seemed like he was alone on the street for forever before anyone stepped out there towards him. The entire clip I saw lasted probably 15 - 25 seconds. I think played at regular speed, it probably covered 5 - 10 seconds of real driving time. There is one person on the left of the screen that obviously saw it happen. She steps to the curb and seems to hesitate and then turns around - I assume to see if others see what is going on - and then she turns back and steps into the street. At some point, someone on the right comes out and it appears others are with that person. What we don't know is if the drivers of the vehicles knew he was there. I mean... yes, it looks like there is no way they couldn't have seen him, however, if they were focused on the vehicle in front of them and not what lay in the street to their left they wouldn't necessarily have seen him. In the video clip, you see three or four cars drive past him - he's laying in the lane headed one direction, and they are headed the opposite way. If they were like me when I come up on something in the road, they were asking themselves, "What is that?!" and if they figured it out and turned back around, well, the video clip didn't last long enough for us to know what they did or didn't do. They may've noticed the people on the sidewalk starting to mobilize and thought the tragedy was being dealt with. |

Yes, I thought about that too. I know there were quite a few 911 calls. I wondered if people started walking out there after the tape stopped. I sure hope so!! I realize the other cars were driving in the opposite direction but I think it'd be hard to miss someone laying in the street like that. I would like to think that I would have run right out there to at least block him from oncoming traffic but they could have all just be stunned and acted after the tape stopped. It's just such a heart tugging visual it's hard not to think someone should have run out there within those first 5-10 seconds. Can you imagine if that was your parent??? Breaks my heart thinking the family has watched that. |

Like lots of what we see on TV, this clip was shown for the drama....although the situation was pretty terrible. Since this was nearby, a number of the local stations covered it before it hit the national news. The man was indeed hit on a four lane road by two cars that were chasing each other. After he was hit, there were several calls to 911, but since it was a busy 4 lane road, it could also be deadly to anyone who stepped out into the road themselves at dusk. I am sure he was not on a crosswalk, so it would be harder for drivers to stop for someone since there was no warning that a ped crossing was coming up. It is always so much easier to believe the worst about society especially when the media points us in that direction

DH was watching some 'Most Shocking' show, where, among all the stupid car accidents and weird arrests, one of the shocking events was some Canadians helping up someone who'd been robbed, and detaining the guy who'd done it. Not sure if it was shocking because people were being helpful, or because Canadians are extra-unhelpful, or what, but at some level it amused me a bit. People tend to be afraid to put themselves in personal danger, but I have known enough to go out of their way to help others. I stopped my car to check on a woman who looked like she needed help -- and had two other people slow down to check on me. The world hasn't turned evil just yet.
