Religious songs...do you have any favorites?

Do you have any favorite religious songs...whatever faith you follow or believe in....or don't believe in? You might not follow a certain religion, but just like the tune to a song. My friend's funeral last week got me thinking about what songs I would like played at my service. Hopefully that won't happen for awhile...although I'm sure there are people who would be happy if I got run over by a truck. LOL. Anyway, long story short, I figured I'd write them down for DH just in case. Might as well list the ones you like now instead of having someone pick them out for you. I'm such a control freak...Some of my favorites are:

"One Bread, One Body"
"You Raise Me Up"
"I Wonder As I Wander" (Vanessa Williams does a beautiful job singing this one)
"Awesome God"
"Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel"
"Be Not Afraid"
"Hava Nagila"

"I Can Only Imagine" - Mercy Me

There was a Steven Curtis Chapman song that was popular on mainstream radio a long while back. I don't remember the name,.

I'm not sure how "religious" this is, but it definately reminds me of a spiritual one:

"I Hope You Dance" - Lee Ann Womack. The lyrics are so beautiful, speaking of embracing life, love and faith.

Of course, the Christmas favs:

"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
"Hallelujah Chorus" (gives me goose bumps!)
"Silent Night"
"O Come All Ye Faithful"

I know I've heard and know more Christian music than that, I just can't seem to think of the titles right now.

I agree with you..."I Hope You Dance" is a beautiful song...There was one Mom who wrote part of that song in her 8th grade daughter's yearbook...dedicated a few lines of it to her...I thought that was so touching...I picked up the book and CD in the thrift store for only a dollar or two...It's great...I don't want everyone to get the idea that I'm some kind of religious nut...I'm just a spiritual fruit! My Mom is Methodist, my Dad is Catholic...hence in 1963 they had to sign a paper to raise the kids Catholic. I'm pretty open to all religions...Just my pet peeve is when someone puts something down about Catholicism. I respect others beliefs and I want them to do the same. Anyway, back to the subject at hand...anyone else? ~Lisa

Our 14yr. old neighbor died in his sleep a month ago yesterday. It is still hard to talk about it .I was the one w/ Mom as they were trying to revive him, when the ambulance came, and when the ambulance left, and when we got the phone call just a few minutes later that he had passed. Because all of the kids at the busstop saw all the police cars and ambulances, all the teenagers were at the site as well-none of them made it to school that day. .. He was such a neat ittle guy, and my heart is broken. We are a really tight court here and his mom and dad are so amazing, and just the best of friends. Please keep the Seutter Family in your prayers. At Josh's funeral, they played a really great slide show of pics to this song:
YouTube - Hillsong From The Inside Out We just can't hear it enough!!!

on his my space, Josh listed God as his hero. How amazing is that????

I don't really see "You Raise Me Up" and "I hope you Dance" as religious songs, but they are both nice songs to listen to. I use "I hope you dance" in the 5th grade slide show most years.

It wasn't the Elvis version, but we sang that in church just this morning!

I've always loved:

I Love to Tell the Story
What A Friend We Have in Jesus
Savior, Again, To Thy Dear Name We Raise
The Church's One Foundation and, of course
Amazing Grace

The first two were my Grandmother's favorites and I think that's why I love them. The third -- I actually like the second verse the best -- we closed every service with that verse at the church I went to through my high school years.

Yep, that's my very favorite

Actually, I have all of Elvis' gospel CD's and some of my other favorites of his are:

I Believe

Somebody Bigger Than You and I

Let us Pray

You'll Never Walk Alone

I also have all the Shout to the Lord cd's and really love them. I play them when I'm cleaning cause they're so upbeat

Besides old hymns, I like most anything by Casting Crowns, and also like Monk and Neagle.

Not that it would be good at a funeral but any Veggie Tales song.
also not really religious but Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) In The Arms OF The Angels.

CaddyLisa - I agree with you .I think all religions have a lot of wisdom to offer. I love studying religion and think it has helped me be a better spiritual person. My church for our communion class actually encouraged us to go to other chuches so we could be more understanding and make a real choice when we joined the church.

As an indian friend says- I respect your gods ......

I love that song, too! I think it was written by Gordon Lightfoot, another Canadian.

These are the two that I like.

Had to add: I also love my daddy's version of the Lord's Prayer. He sang it at my wedding and brought tears to everyone in the church! (not bad for someone who can't read a lick of sheet music....)
