ANyone having a yard sale or been to some?

I haven't been going as much because of the gas prices, but a friend and I went on Friday and we got some AWESOME stuff! ( I have to say my find of the day was a limited, signed Peter Sculthorpe print for $20 )

We were thinking about having one, but if people aren't going I don't want to waste my time on it?

Are you going to more? Or less? Or have you had one this year already?

And feel free to brag about your good finds!

We had our town wide yard sales this past weekend, didn't use a whole lot of gas because our town is only about 1 mile in all directions (really small town). my 12 year old and I went and had a blast, we yard saled for 4 hours straight and didn't use too much gas. I had a list of things I was looking for and of course, didn't finnd too much on the list, but did find a bunch of other great stuff: Singer mini sewing machine a regular machine just smaller in size $5, 4 tension rods .25 each (these were on my list), curtain rods 8 for .50, 3 pair of pj's for me .25 each, 2 pj's for DD 1.00 each, basketball/baseball/football card collection $10 some guy got rid of his whole collection (DH & DD have been having a blast going through and seeing how much they are worth in a Beckett), TI-83 scientific calculator $3, 3 books .50 each, lamp $1, another lamp $1, 2 locker accessories .25 each, 1 mini blind brand new $1, Motorola cell phone brand new in box $5 (DH broke his last week but I didn't want to buy a new one) they had two, I only got one, went home and charged a=it put the SIM in and it works great but I didn't know if the SIM would work in it, I went back to get the other one, of course it was gone, I was so mad at myself for not buying both of them to start with. American Eagle jean skirt for DD .50, American Eagle jean shorts .25, Kodak digital camera $2 with no software, but I have the exact same camera so already had the software (yay), bottle of White Diamonds perfume $1, B&B lotion new tube $1, Biggelow gift set new .50, purse .50, Eurcerin hand cream new purse size tubes .10 each (got 10), whole bag of new light plate switches electrical outlet plates (needed these because we have some missing) I can't remember what else.

We had a yard sale about a month ago and made about $100 all small stuff, nothing big and no furniture, so we were happy with that. I have only been going to sales if they are in my town. I used to go all over, but with gas prices now, I am not doing that anymore.

I haven't been to a whole lot but some I've seen on the way to my moms or while I'm out doing other errands, I stop.
No spectacular finds but just general items. I got a Barbie doll house for $2, Nerf Dart Tag set for $5(my oldest dd had just gotten the much smaller set at Walmart for $15), Junie B. Jones paperback books for .25, new scooby doo puzzle for .50 and our most fun find was a Monopoly pinball game. It's on legs, plugs up, has the lights and sound but is nothing huge or fancy but it was $5 and we've definitely had $5 worth of fun out of it already! Oh, my youngest found a brand new Scooby Doo chia pet for .50. She's been wanting one but I would never pay $15 for it. And I forgot, my oldest dd was looking for a storage type box and we found a sewing box, padded on top but closes and locks. It's a nice size but not huge, it was $2. We opened it up and it has 6 HUGE rolls of thread in it. The kind they use on commercial machines, I suppose. I don't sew but my kids have been using the thread for arts and crafts projects.

I usually find a neighborhood sale, so I can park my car and walk. I have not been yet this year because we have been doing a lot of camping. I love to go though.

I have them all the time. Last year I had them every saturday and sunday from July to Oct. My husband and I make out great. We sell everything. I`m going to be starting this year and I am not afraid of getting people there because of the gas prices because you are driving local and getting bargains. What a nice way to spend a day.

Great thread, I too am contemplating having a yard sale.

I would love to go to a few yardsales, but, I just love to sleep in on Saturdays, so I usually don't go......

We just had our's this past weekend and did pretty well. It was humid, though, so it could have been a lot better.

I had been pricing and labeling since after Christmas. I resolve every year to spend less, but it doesn't always work that way. lol

My kids had a lemonade and chilled water bottle stand. They made a little chunk of change, too.

I did sell the bigger, more profitable stuff on Craigslist. I also listed our yard sale on CL and my local paper. Last year we did a community yard sale and I liked it better because it was in the cool month of March. I didn't notice much of a difference, though, with crowds. Most of the people that came were from our area anyway. I had a few friends from the neighborhood stop by and a few teachers. too.

I love garage sales! I have been going to them for the last few weekends and here in Colorado, they are still popular.

The last week - I got some .10 shirts for both of my daughters for next winter, jeans from Old Navy for .50 (adjustable waist! I was so excited!), new winter coat and boots from Lands End for $7 total, Crocs for my son (we were in desperate need of sandals) for $2 (brand new!!!!) Christmas dress for $1.50, folding shovel for camping from Colemans for $2, some books for .25, a spy kit for my son for $2, and a HUGE bag of Mega Blocks for $2.

I am still on the hunt for a leotard, clothes for me, shirts for my son and whatever other deals I can find!

I love yard sales. My mom and I went last weekend. We had a blast together and found lots of goodies for the kids and I even found some clothes for me. Usually my husband goes and I stay home with the kids. He looks for stuff to resell. I had a blast, I wonder if I could go this weekend?

I am holding one on Friday, June 20.

I have lived in different towns over the years and it is interesting how the *popular* day of the week to hold them varies... In our old home town, everyone held yard sales on payday Thursday (it was a mining town, everyone in town worked there!) and in our current home town, yard sales are held on Fridays.

Someone mentioned advertising on Craigslist. I found the listing page... Do a lot of people look at that?

Our newspaper charges $10 for 3 lines of text in the classifieds. Since I'm splitting with a friend, we're going to do it... but wow, that's almost as bad as eBay fees. LOL.

Speaking of eBay, eBay is hot right now considering it is usually pretty dead in the summer time (in my experience!)! I'm having great success on there with some of the items that we want to get rid of but that would do better on eBay then at yard sale. I sold a new Life Is Good tee-shirt for $20... I would have gotten a buck at yard sale!!! Worth checking even with those fees -- although I know that flipper is probably going eBay strong right now!

Our local "main" paper is $40 for a garage sale add... so consider yourself lucky! I put our ad in a local pennysaver type paper for $12 and an ad on Craigslist. I asked people where they saw about the sale and it was about 50/50. Since Craigslist is free I would definitely do that. I also sold a few things there immediately afterward that didn't sell at the sale.

I used to have them once or twice a year at least. When things were really tight, it was almost a side business for my sister and I and we would even go dumpster diving for extra items to sell.
I hadn't had one recently for a year or so and just had one this past weekend ON THE HOTTEST DAYS OF THE YEAR!
The week before had rained and I wanted to just get it done!
Surprisingly, I did very well and after 2 days made over $300. I still have tons of stuff but couldn't bear another sweltering day so I will have it again this weekend instead.

I don't advertise. I have made very large clearly readable signs from old wire and cardboard election signs. After the elections I gather a couple and year and add some clean cardboard and paint YARD SALE, my street - no address - and and HUGE ARROW. Then I place on on each end of my block and several others to direct traffic in from the main streets. I have 2 main streets and a total of 8 signs that I poke into the ground. I get alot of customers this way and never spend a dime. I never put the times, dates or exact address so I can reuse them (and let my neighbors borrow them as well).

As far as times go.....in my neighborhood (I live near a jail and a hospital) it is an all day affair. People get off work at varying times and so I start at around 9 and go until 6 or so depending on my mood. That is a long and tiring day.
In Lancaster, PA, my gf has a sale from 6 am until 11 am and she is done. Everyone gets up early shops hard and goes home. Very intense but nice to have it over.

We had one last year and made over $340 on little ****. I just advertised on craigslist and put signs up. Here it's Saturday only and normal hours are about 7-11am as it gets really hot here. I also sold things prior on craigslist. If you don't have big things, you can group them in lots and sell on craigslist. I sold out of 15 of the 20 things I listed before the sale on craigslist!

I generally go out every Saturday and find lots of fun things cheap.

Amen!! I have a whole garage full of crap that I need to get rid of. I go back and forth thinking, oh just donate it. Then I think, are you crazy, you are so broke!! So I think I am starting to break down and try and have a yard sale. In my neighborhood not a lot of people have them though, so I kind of don't look forward to it. Need that money though!!

A friend told me yesterday that the developement where she lives is having a community wide sale in 2 weeks, so I am bring my junk over there! The kids can all play together and there should be a good number of people if the whole place is doing it.

It won't cost me anything so hopefully I can make a few $$!
