Help, I have a housefull of fleas!!!

I cant get rid of the fleas in my house. My dog must have picked them up somewhere. I havent had fleas in the house or on the dog ever before. What can I buy to spray my carpets to get rid of them. HELP.

The only thing I have ever had luck with are bombs. I use frontline on my dog starting in April through about October.

A few years ago, We got them and I bombed the house and while that was happening, I took my dog and washed and flea dipped her somewhere else at a wash your own dog place.

I heard that bombs dont work. My house is huge, I would need to buy 20 of them. I had fleas in my house 20 years ago, really bad, and bought some stuff in a little brown bottle at home depot, but cant remember what it was called, and cant find it anymore. It worked great.

First, get your dog on a flea program from your vet. Don't get the over the counter stuff. I don't think it works, and have even read stories of it causing death in animals.

As for your house, vacuum DAILY and dump the bag. I have heard that if you stick moth balls in your bag, that will kill the fleas in the bag. Not sure if it will also kill them around your house if you did this, tho. I would just use regular rug shampoo on the carpet. The key is to stop them from reproducing, with the dog treatment (applied to the neck) and keep vacuuming them up. You may also want to get a treatment for your yard.

Good Luck. I hated when our pets got fleas.....what a wonderful thing when they came out with Front Line

Luckily, I've only had to deal with this twice in the past 13-yrs. My cats stay strictly indoors unless they're going to the vet. (Which is where I believe they got the fleas from.) I've heard about the mothballs in the vacuum bag as well (never tried it). But, if you have little ones, or pets, in your home, I don't think I'd want to leave mothballs around the house. (They may get eaten.) I agree that you should use the vet flea meds (like Frontline or Advantage), they work very well. Eventually, the fleas that are in the home will get on the pet and bite them, and the flea meds will kill them.

I've had good luck with flea bombs in the past, but I don't remember what brand. They use to sell flea traps (made by Raid & other companies), but I haven't seen them in the stores in years. You can basically make something similar yourself. You just put a shallow bowl (or pan) with 1"-2" of water and a few drops of dish soap, on the floor under a nightlight (at night). The fleas (and other insects) are attracted to the light and fall into the bowl when they jump towards the light. Therefore, the room needs to be completely dark, other than the nightlight. The dish soap keeps them submerged in the water and they drown. You should put one "flea trap" in every room. (Or, at least every carpeted room.)But, once again, if you have pets in the same room, there's that possibility they may try to drink the soapy water.

We used bombs on my neighbors house, and they worked great.......While the house was being bombed we took her animals to the groomers and had them dipped. We also sprayed her yard, since the doggies go out for potty breaks. She hasn't had a problem since......

I use Revolution on my animals and haven't had a problem. I like the Revolution since it's Heartworm and Flea & Tick all in one med. Easier for me to keep track of.......

If you aren't interested in bombing them your best course of action is wash all the animal bedding, and any blankets, pillows etc. that they lay on, vaccuum a lot, and shampoo, and do it more than once. They do sell powders that you can sprinkle on your carpets and then vacuum up, I have never used them though, so don't know if they work. Get your animals on a good course of flea meds, if they aren't already on one.....

Good Luck!

I wanted to add that I usually bomb and then bomb again in a few weeks to be sure nothing hatched!
I also check my dog about 3 times a day for a while so if there are any fleas, I can get them off. I have found it best to just start early with flea preventative from the vet, because they sure are a pain if you get them!

We use advantage now and haven't had a problem since we started using it. We use to have a problem fairly often. look up various old posts about where to get it for less. For Carpets sprinkle borax. old fashiond 40 mule team borax like your grandmother used for laundry probably, and then vaccuum. It does the trick everytime and no need to reapply. Its also all natural and safe.

We had them really bad one time and spent what seemed to be a fortune on bombs, sprays, old wive tale remedies, etc.

Then I called an exterminator, and we spent the day away from home. 100 bucks later, no fleas and we had a one year guarantee that he would come out again for free if need be.

I used the Raid flea killer. It's in a purple bottle. You said you have a huge house. I had fleas once and my house was 4,000 square feet, I don't know if yours is bigger but i know it worked for mine. I think I had to buy 5 cans of it and it's like $5 a bottle.

I dealt with this very thing a few years ago. My house was run over with fleas in every room there was carpet. I vacuumed, I got a flea trap, I washed the cats, I sprayed the cats, I sprayed the carpet... NOTHING WORKED...untill...

I got Advantage Flea medicine for cats. I put it on all my cats, and within 24 hours the fleas on them were dead... then the fleas on the carpet jumped on the cats and poof they died! I say it took 2 weeks until the house was flee free just from putting Advantage on the cats and letting the fleas jump on them. Haven't had a flea since!

Ok, so where do you get the advantage? I have 2 cats, a kitten and a dog to treat. How much is the advantage? Where is the best place to buy it.

I got mine online.

1800pet meds is a good source.

Advantage - 1800PetMeds.com

you buy it by the weight of your pet.

Good luck fighting those pests!!!

Edited to add... You get like 4 tubes in a pack.. That's the one I bought. I had 4 cats. I just needed to use it once. You use one tube per animal.

I saw an ad for this in the paper, I have never bought from them, tho.

PetCareEx.com or call 1-866-PetCareRx mention code SMART618 for $10 off plus FREE Shipping on orders over $35 (I'm reasonably sure you will qualify) I "think" you can get this at Target, too. I know I have seen front line there. Your veterinarian will surely carry it, too.

I would recommend you do the monthly treatment if your pets go outside.

It seems as though everyone has really done a great job of covering the basics for flea problems. I thought I'd jump in too since I work at a Vet office and tell you what we recommend.

We don't recommend flea baths as they really don't work well overall. Definately treat the pet...we recommend Advantage. Use it monthly. While you treat your pet, spray or fog your home. We recommend Knockout for that. Wash and vacuum as much as you can and be diligent about it. We sell 6 packs and price them as 5 packs plus one free dose. It can be purchased online, but be careful if you do, because you won't have a guarantee w/the product since they only sell to Veterinarians (it is the same for heartgard as well).

Advantage Free tube w/purchase

Flea collars are pretty much a waste of time and money and most OTC products as well. We see a great deal of clients who come in for skin problems after using OTC products to treat fleas on their pets. Once I started using flea prevention monthy (in Ohio it is during warm months, so March or April through October or November), I stopped having any and all problems. They are horrible to battle!

Wishing you a quick victory!

I feel for you. Some how my cat got them and she was a indoor cat. We think our neighbors had them when they moved out and our apartment was right next door.

We bathed our cat every other day with cat flea shampoo. use flea powder stuff for rugs everyday, and make sure you vacuum everyday.

Wrap up any stuffed animals in plastic bags for at least 4 weeks. wash sheet and comfortors at least 3 times a week. make sure when you vacuum you get in corners under beds ect. everyday!

Good luck! they are nasty and hard to get rid of but do this everyday and they will be gone.

fleas live in the sand and dirt. You can actually bring them in on yourself. People with no pets can have fleas in their home.

Defintiely get your pets all on a flea treatment.
