| Attention fellow Geocachers...
I am teaching a class on Geocachng...{actually a series of classes I found out this AM} I need fellow Geocachers to send me a PM containing a short story about how they got involved with Geocaching and their favorite cache ever found. I also would like to know which kind of caches you prefer...micro, mini, virtual..ect... Thanks! For those are not familiar with Geocaching it is a Treasure hunt of sorts using handheld GPS systems. FUN!!! Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site (By the way, I would ask on the Geocaching board, but some of those people are SO competitive! I would rather hear stories from people who do it just for the fun of it)

My DS is into geocaching. He's 17 and does it with friends. Don't think they've found any real "treasures" but they love doing it for the fun of it. Do you want me to ask him about his experiences?

"What is a micro cache?" It means what you are looking for is really really small. I have seen them as hollowed out screws! "Do you want me to ask him about his experiences?" Yes, yes yes! - I used the word "treausre" a little loosely actually. We have never really found a treasure, but the cache itself is the treasure..LOL"Do you have the dates you are teaching the class? " The first one is July 30th....I would love for you to come!

From my DS: I found about geocaching through a friend. My first reaction to this global treasure hunt was interesting. The unearthing experience of using a GPS to find 'hidden treasure' seemed like some sort of adventure that was out of this world. This hobby was completely different from something I had ever done before. My favorite cache would have to be one by the name of "Oh Thank Heaven #7" provided by the lovely users at geocaching.com. While trying not to give any hints to the location of the cache, the clue 'An arms reach from Gus' really was hilarious and proved to make this cache worth the seach. My preference to finding caches would have to be mini caches. Not too big, not too small, and goodies inside to serve as a souvenir of your geocaching discoveries.

We started geocaching just this spring and have discovered that there are over 400 caches less than 15 miles from our home...in small town northern Minnesota! We have unearthed three of them so far...our favorite was a birdhouse hung on the side of a tree in the woods! Our first was in a hollow tree...It is so much fun to go treasure hunting (almost literally in our back yard...there is one only three blocks from here, but thus far it has eluded us!) It is so fun to explore places that we thought we knew, until we really got a chance to trample all over them! (BTW, fyi, it is extremely challenging to find a rubbermaid container duct taped with camo colored tape in the woods )

Becca - If it's a micro cache, how do you know you've found it? A hollowed out screw..LOL, I would not even give it a 2nd glance. |

You're not allowed to bury them. But I have seen one that was a tin with a dried cactus piece glued on, just covered in sand. Another one was a candy tin, with rocks and gravel glued on, just sitting in the rocks by the side of a road. DH tripped on it, or I don't think we would have found it. DH won a GPS ages ago, didn't know what to do with it, and ended up finding a site mentioning geocaching. I mostly like ending up in places I didn't know existed -- we tend to avoid urban caches, and end up in the middle of the desert. Some sites are really beautiful, though we tend to get distracted if we find old buildings, or ancient abandoned cars. We do bring a camera, and always have water with us. One of the more interesting sites was near some ancient, peaceful graves, with bits of desert glass all around. I like the hiking part, too, and the occasional bit of rock climbing. Traditional (big-ish) caches are the best, but I tend to keep tiny charms to leave in mini caches. I dislike when people leave plush toys, or fast food toys in them, since those take up so much space. It is okay just to sign the log, and exchange nothing. I mostly leave little pieces of jewelry, often handmade. |

go to ebay and look up geocahing you'll find a bunch of diffrent containers used. I've seen fake bolts, screws, nails, bidhouses, bird nests, outlet boxes, caches you have to use a blacklight to find, caches you have to use a flashlight to find, a cache that has a tape player in the woods that "whispers" the correct cords at a certain time dureing the night ummm fake dirt dabbers and fake wasp nests.
