Unhappy Cold Sores??

My poor son went out swimming the other day & that night he ended up with 3 on the top lip & 3 or 4 on the bottom lip that looks to go down to his chin. They are painfull & swelling.
What do you all do for these? I have used that expensive stuff in the blue tube in the past & it's not working this time.. We tried carmex & thats not working either. Any home remedy's out there?? Or what works best for you??? Thanks for your help..My son thanks u 2 !!

I take L-Lysine every day and then if a cold sore is coming I take more. You can get it in the vitamin area of about any place that sells such things. Pharmacy walmart spme grocery stores. If you get some have him take about 4 a day until they start drying down . I haven't had a cold sore for quite a while since I'm taking it everyday.

My son had one of these that would NOT go away. I put the NexCare stuff in it, white tube with blue writing. Nothing. It was just getting worse. I took him to the doctor, he had bronchites. The doctor told me that he got the cold sore because of the bronchitis. HE gave us a prescription for the bronchites and another for a tube of stuff for the cold sore. He cleared up.

I would for sure take him to the doctor based on just how many cold sores he has. Did he swim in a lake? There are lots of germs and backteria in lakes.

I swear by L-Lysine, I get frequent sores in my mouth from Lupus well I did until I started taking L-Lysine daily, I used to take it when I had a flare up of sores, but its great stuff for cold sores. One of my cats is actually on it, he has had goopy eyes forever and antibiotics didnt work so they put her on this crushed up stuff that turned out to be l-lysine so now I just get a big bottle and crush her up a tablet each day and put it in her "treat" of wet food and she is doing much better, they say that she has the herpes virus. Which in humans also causes the majority of cold sores.

Our daughter gets cold sores. Our MD told us there is a med that you can take pre-emptively as soon as you feel one coming on. It's something oral, and it prevents the sore from ever happening! I need to get my hands on some so that next time DD is in that situation we can head them off at the pass.

Denavir has worked well for her. I picked some up in Mexico dirt cheap last fall and figured if it didn't work it wasn't a great loss. In the US I pay about $19/tube, and in Cozumel it was under $2/tube. So far I've not been able to tell any difference in its efficacy. Medicated, she clears up in about 3 days. No meds - a week to ten days.

I have been a frequent cold sore sufferer for many years and have yet to find a prescription medicine that works well. I agree with the above poster on the Lysine....I don't take it everyday...but take about 4 a day when I feel one start coming on and it seems to fend it off. I also have used a Walgreens brand cold sore medicine that you put on at the first sign of a cold sore....it definitely worked. I have used this the past two times and it totally kept the cold sore away. Another thing, definitely get them some chapstick with a good SPF protection in it....that will help them avoid getting them from the sun. Anytime I go to the pool or get in a tanning bed I have to protect my lips or I will get cold sores from the heat.

DH & I get them, too. We have a prescription for Acyclovir - both pills & cream. I don't think it does much, DH thinks it does. The pills you take 3 a day for 5 days when you first feel it coming on.

Last time I was at my dermatologist for my hands, I had one and she gave me a prescription for Valtrex to try next time. It's 2 pills in the morning and then 2 that evening and that's it. It's the same medicine they use for Genital Herpes except for that they take them every day (cold sores are a different strain of the Herpes Virus).

I've not had one since she gave me the prescription, so I don't know if it works better, but she swore it would. It's very expensive, though. It think it was $40 for the 4 pills.

I hope you figure something out, cold sores suck!

Lisa
