Thumbs up MC Memories - share yours

I have been thinking back over the history of my time at MC and I am remembering lots of things I had forgotten about in my absence. I thought it would be fun to share some things we remember!!

-- The first one that stands out is September 11th. Alexander had just turned 2 the month before and I was pregnant with Kelsey. I was browsing the boards as I did every morning. I was getting ready to head out to take Alexander for his first ever "big boy haircut" and wanted to get there right when they opened at 9am. Right before I left, I saw a post that was titled something like "Plane hits World Trade Center". I did not open the post but on my way out the door I remember thinking, "Damn, someone learning to fly their plane sure screwed up!" It wasn't until I got to the hair salon and the reports started coming in on the radio that I learned what was happening. We high tailed it home and of course, we all know what unfolded that day and in the days that followed. I remember how afraid I was and how a lot of us were here for each other, supporting one another through such an awful time.

-- The clover fiasco. Wow what a drama that was! LOL Looking back at it now it seems so darn silly but boy when we were in the thick of it, we were PASSIONATE about that whole thing!!!

I'll start with those two for now. I look forward to hearing what others remember from "the good ol' days"!

That was my first thought too. Then I refreshed the page and there was a second post "another plane has hit the other tower." I knew then it wasn't an accident and that I needed to turn on the news.

I was MIA during the clover wars.

But I remember the Crayola vs. Rose Art Debate.

I remember in 2000 some members had a get together here in St. Louis. I was supposed to go, but I went into preterm labor and missed out.

I'll try to remember more, but I need lunch.

OK stop me if you've heard this one...but when I first came to the board I noticed a lot of people put TIA at the end of their posts. I thought it was remarkable there were so many people named Tia on this board when all my life I had only met one lady named Tia. I wondered if a bunch of y'all were related since so many people had the same name.

I also remember searching in vain on the General Electric website for deals on party supplies and kitchenware, because people were raving about 'ge.com' big clearance sale

The tennis shoes were great. And the pets.com $15 coupons over and over..

I remember the angry crayon debate, peanut debate, birthday goodie bag debate, yada yada yada...I think the only time I got 'hate mail' was during the post about goodie bags at kids bday parties. Someone got super offended when I said it was cracking me up...the seriousness of the subject of spending/not spending enough $ on a goodie bag for a 2 year old's party LOL!

I know my user name is new but I'm actually ponderhim from 2001.

Anyhow, I remember Mother Nature deals and wasn't it drugstore.com too? Some place like that gave us fantastic deals.

I also remember the big "crayon" debate. lol

And, sadly I remember the clover drama and the premier boards or something like that...sigh.

I remember the tragedy that was the poster tggrsmommy.

I remember the poster who posted that her brothers were NY City firefighters who had died in 9/11, and how she turned out to be a fraud.
The many debates of:
Crayola vs. Roseart
Formula feeding vs. breast feeding
circumcising boys vs non-circumcising

All of Sammy's creations (like the cool bathroom she redid, her house, made from junk projects, etc). LWMSAVON and her binder method, that was priceless to me. I still use it.

I remember those sears $5.00 coupons - how many of us got loads of them. How they clothed my kids in little onesies turtlenecks that retailed for $5.98

I remember the crazy deals - pampers points, and what people were willing to do for them...

I remember the controversies, too - but the deals are more fun!!

I remember all the deals from back in the day. I think I still have some of the free robots from amazon somewhere around here from the $$$ toy orders that rang up $0 Free sneakers, Beenz, riding the bus at Freeride, I never bought diapers for my now 9yr old dd thanks to Drugstore.com, free candy bars from Mothernature, Free food and coffee from a lot of diff places. Priceline grocery deals. Still have the sock puppet from Pets.com. Free clothes and baby supplies from Babystyle.com. And lets not forget the $15 coupon from bn.com that you could use a zillion times. Christmas was really hopping at our house in 99 and 2000 and I don't think I spent more than $5-$10 either year.

I also remember the whole tggrsmommy fiasco and the clover wars and I haven't forgotten the crayon ordeal (although I just stood back and watched in disbelief for that one)

The funniest thing that sticks out in my mind is the Mycouponer that had their coupons thrown all over the parking lot by some fruity cashier who quit their job when they saw that stack LOL makes me chuckle every time I think of it.

I nearly forgot about Beenz. I remember when we first started the Target posts, posting all the mismarked items and great hidden clearance deals. I got stoneware for 12 for $3.24 and a 5 piece set of suitcases for $9.99. (multiples of each actually) All the free coffee too.

I miss those days!

I remember too. Vividly She was an absolute mess.

I still haven't cleaned out my PM box since I came back to the board. Right now there are 7 messages from her sitting in there. My son was sick ( he had a tumor on his jaw) at the same time her daughter Emily was sick. She would pm with questions about Tyler and updates on Emily. The last pm she sent was the night before ds's 2nd surgery, and just shortly before her daughter passed.

I remember all the deals in the early days. So many deals you had to constantly refresh your screen. I remember all the free stuff I got one year with all the great deals that I got from MyCoupons. Remember Drugstores test drives, Epinions- Dunkin Donuts Coffee, Free toys from various e stores, Buy.com 20 off 20 and free shipping, MotherNature and Drugstore 20 or 25 off 20 or 25 and also free shipping... Remember one member had a tag line something to the effect of Clicking my way to Disney...perhaps referencing Beenz or PointClick....

Are you the poster who found the tumor on her son because your DH and DS were wrestling around and he got hurt? I've thought about you periodically and wondered how that turned out. I remember there were plenty of people who weren't very friendly because of the way you found the tumor.

If you aren't her, I wonder whatever happened to her.

Remember tackyjunkcollector? I don't remember if she was the one with the NY Firefighter brothers, but she had a lot of stories. She was the mortician who was preggers, had an affair with someone, then her hubby that she was seperated from dropped dead and she moved someone in. Remember that one?

I really admired and looked forward to all of Sammy's posts with visuals! She really put Martha Stewart to shame. Wish I had the talent and creativity that she did.

Yup.

Dh and Tyler had been playing around on the couch, dh was tickling him and ds was climbing all over him. They stopped for a minute and dh was laying on the couch with his knees propped up and ds stood up on the arm of the couch and jumped on dh. Dh didn't see him in time to catch him and his chin hit dh's knee.

He was diagnosed with Histiocytosis. He's doing pretty well. We suspect he may have Diabetes Insipidus, very common for kids with HC. But otherwise he's doing good, he hasn't needed chemo or steroids, or any more surgeries since then.

I bought so much stuff that year and paid a total of $89 for all the Christmas presents including soooooo much stuff for my kids and free dogfood that the UPS man cursed everytime he had to deliver it. I think I sat in front of the computer for days on end when I first discovered this site and all the deals, I think it may of also been the start of by deal shopping addiction!!! LOL

DS is 24-yrs old, so I don't remember any of the "mommy" deals. Although I do remember everyone raving and posting about them.

I ones that stick out in my mind are my DH's Golf Magazine subscriptions. I got a total of 6-yrs for free! His subscription just ran out this past December. The Cuisinart Grind & Brew from Gevalia (still have), and all the free coffee samples from everywhere! The 47(?)-cent deodorant from CVS.com (maybe), and the 1-cent sample/travel size deodorant at CVS (B&M). I also remember becoming boardline diabetic from all the free candy. I think it was a coupon for some new Reese's candy bar, can't remember the name even though I ate a ton of them. (LOL)

And, I especially remember (and miss), all the vehicle test drives, like Volvo's $100 Orvis GC. (sweet!) I think there was an Eddie Bauer one too, not sure. I have a couple of Eddie Bauer X-mas snowglobes (love them!) but can't remember how I got them. (LOL) What ever happened to the vehicle test drives? Did they just dry up?

Apparently I was MIA in the Crayola vs. Roseart and the clover wars, too. I don't remember them. Of course my main focus was on freebies and deals, and there were plenty of those to take up my time. What was the clover wars? The only "debates" I can seem to remember are Breyer's vs. Edy's (I guess cause I started the thread, LOL), though I don't remember it getting too heated. And, I remember a lot of members talking about leaving the boards when MC put the 'Lifetime Member' option out there. I felt I had gotten so many freebies and saved so much money using MC and the boards that I really didn't have a problem paying the $19.95 (I think that's what it was).

Boy, things sure have changed in the past several years. Yeh, I remember having to "refresh" the page frequently because the deals and freebies were hoppin' back then. Ah, the good ol' days!

Oh my gosh, those were great deal days! I'm so glad OP started this post, my memory is shot to hell, so it's great having everyone post what they remember.

I still have my pets.com dog puppet with the microphone. I really felt bad when the site folded, I know we helped, by getting all that free dog and cat food.

So many Internet start-ups that had practically free free stuff just to get you to their site.

Getting UPS deliveries or boxes in the mail almost everyday!

I DO remember refreshing and seeing MORE new deals posted!

I loved the MotherNature Chocolate bars and even liked the dunkin donuts coffee.

The reward sites were great too! I won so many things. Once I got $500 worth of Gift Certificates by cashing in points/credits.

aahhhh, the good ol' days!

I remember a lot about the deals.
The UPS man was at my house EVERY day, if he wasn't, it had to be Sunday or as dh said "were you not on the computer for a day?" LOL

The dog food! OMG!! The 40-50 lb bags, tons of them! My UPS driver HATED me as well!

I still have the leash and my dog wears the matching collar that I bought with those good deals on pets.com!

Freeride! Oh wow! Was that awesome!

The testdrives..oh wow.. I received some of the nicest gifts from them. I mean, REALLY nice gifts! (Raybans, other designer sunglasses, Gift Baskets, money, gift cards..the list goes on..)

I JUST threw out my burts bees kits that I had received from either drugstore.com or mothernature.com. I had forgotten about them in the back of my hall closet and they were bad. Made me miss the deals when I saw them.

I know there were a LOT of Amazon deals.

The clover wars. ugh. Yuck.

Me going through some tough times in my life and having so many wonderful people to help me along. Many of you ladies were my saving grace during a time when I felt all alone. I will always have a warm place in my heart for MC and the wonderful people who post here.

FLYLADIES!

Posters: Deewheat, her snake and her lovely granddaughter, Mimi and SharonNov7.

And Finally, learning the coupon binder system. The best thing I have ever learned that I still use to this day.

Because we ran them outa business of course

No, seriously the companies started the promotions to drive people to their sites back in the pioneering days of internet retail, Now that the internet retail business is more than established there is no need for the big promotions. Of course sometimes we still get lucky and there is a great deal, although most of those are canceled orders due to overload(sigh)

Luckily I wasn't around for the Clover Wars...or whatever you call it. I hear it was really something else! The three things that stick out for me are:

the poster StBernadette who constantly posted about her horrible medical problems...but yet she seemed to be able to get all over town on the bus to get her coupon deals...

MisterCoupon of course...

Prdnme's great Target deals...The summer when they had all of the fruit/Hawaiian "stuff" I got so many things for the kitchen...and the Todd Oldham line of towels, sheets, etc. for the dorm...I went crazy on that one...

I was curious as to whatever happened to her so I did a google on her name. Found some posts she made on a message board some place in late 2007 and early 2008. Seems her husband became a woman, among other things. The more things change, the more they stay the same

I remember the "Clover Wars" vividly.
coupons for the free booster seat at TRU.
All those test drives for $50 or $100 (I would just take the cert. and my kids, never had to actually test drive a car)
Delias $30 off $35 code (I still have some clothes from that)
Amazon toys
books for a penny with free shipping
Kmart mis-marking their clearance (I would take a list with me and price check everything)

This site really got me through back in the day. I miss those deals.

When my almost-10 yr old was a baby, amazon and babystyle were always doing '$20 off a $20.01 purchase with free shipping' type things and I stocked up on Brio sets, Melissa & Doug wooden puzzles, finger puppet sets, etc. Now my youngest uses them...plus the Radio Flyer tricycle I got for $15 from babystyle.

I still have my Asics...they've held up great, as has the Seiko I got from ashford for almost nothing in 1999. I still have quite a few things from greatentertaining, also. Plus my Wedgwood china from a clearance on JCPenney...$15 a setting. Never would've found that if it hadn't been for MC.

OH! And my furniture from Penneys when they had that 50% off furniture coupon. We bought a sofa and two wing chairs and they've held up beautifully. We couldn't have afforded such a nice set at the time if it weren't for that deal.

And the one that got away...I saw the free Tivos but had never heard of them and figured what was the point, I already have a VCR. I was kicking myself for that one for a while.

Best of all was the almost-free Christmases....I miss that. And the dog food and Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

I remember the booster seat coupons! Dd uses that booster in dh's car. One year my Target took and clearanced Christmas DVDs. My kids still watch the Winnie the Pooh one I got for less than $2. $2 for hours of peace and quiet, so worth it.

Remember when Huggies had points... I got a free Power Wheels motorcycle thing. Shipping was free. My kids played on that for years. You know, I switched to Huggies for the points and still use them today (for DD).

I wonder what happened to her. Not being catty, but might she have died? If what she put out there was true, it's likely. If she was making it all up, why stop now? Just so strange....!

I remember all the Dunkin Donuts coffee from Rating Wonders... when eToys went under and had everything 90% off.... when iDolls went under and everything was 90% off...

I remember how freaked out people would get when a board would change. There was a shopping board that was divided into My Two Cents Worth where you could talk ABOUT the deals, and the Look What I Found board where you could post the actual DEALS. Could you talk about a Deal in a LWIF thread? Nobody really knew, and everybody was angry about it! lol

Was this the site that you redeemed points? I'm trying to remember the site I bought a lot of Cherished Teddies from for next to nothing.

Am I remembering correctly that Freeride started as a long distance / advertising partnership? You called 1-800-Freeride and listened to ads, and each ad gave you one minute of talk time. Then they became freeride.com.

What was the name of that rebate site that went belly up and left lots of people with $400 Barbies that should've had $399 rebates.... but the rebate money never came? Was it cyberrebate?

I remember that Stbernadette. I always wondered if she was as seriously bad off as she claimed! I also remember getting the furniture from Penney's at 50% off, I still have the sofa and loveseat. I still hope for that to happen again!! I remember that I didn't post near as much, I thought it was kind of like a clique. It seemed to be crazier back then. I also make myself crazy wondering how people I liked and that seemed good were banned and what they did.
