unusual fixes

Please share your unusual fixes. I got a second hand nozzle for the hose that has all the bells and whistles and is to shoot all kinds of different pressures but when I put it on the hose the control handle was broken and the handle just flopped around and no water came out because the screw had worn out the handle. I put a plastic bread clip in front of the screw part and now it works like a champ.

I used to fishing line to sew the back of my cheap fake leather Target shoes back together. They were only needed for work, and it did the job.

On the gross side I once a cheapskate type book that said to save used dental floss to add fiber to soups and stews.

Does anyone here do that? LOL

Wow, that is really gross. If I knew someone who did that, I'd never have dinner at their house!

No, but I think it's a great time saver, you can eat and floss your teeth at the same time!

Listerene for pet urine smells. To remove pet urine smell wash area with soap and water, then go back with listerene in a spray bottle. You will have to clean the area again because of the sugar in listerene but the smell will linger and the pets do not like the way it smells. It's cheaper than other products and was recommended by a vet.

Toothpaste (not gel! but white creamy ones) to fill nail holes in the wall. Just put a little bit on your finger and rub it over the hole. Wahlah.

Toothpaste (white kind) put a small dab on a pimple and it dries it up.

I've done the "toothpaste to fill nail holes" thing before, and my mother has done the "Vicks VapoRub for toenail fungus" before. But, I think I'll pass on the "dental floss soup" idea. eeewwwwww

I'm sure I have more "unusual fixes", but these are all I can think of right now.

Of course, the Dritz Snag Repair needle I mention in the 'favorite gadgets/products' post does an excellent job at fixing snags in your clothing.

I've used markers to "fix" minor chips in pottery. I bought an Italian canister at a yard sale one time for 40-cents. It was very pretty, but it had several minor chips around the outer lip of the jar and on the rim of the lid that were quite noticable. So, I used markers of the same colors as where the chips were (green & black) and just barely dabbed the chipped spots. The markers soaked right into the pottery and the chips practically disappeared. They're now only visible if you really look for them. I've tried it on other pottery items since and it's worked just as well. You just have to make sure you use the correct marker color, and don't use it on dishes that you use for food purposes.

I've also used brown markers to cover-up minor scratches in wooden furniture. Of course they sell special markers for that purpose, but I already had a regular brown one so I didn't see the purpose of buying the special one. And, it worked just fine.

These are more of a cleaning tip rather than an "unusual fix" tip.

An easy way to clean messy glass candle holders. I've bought some pretty, old glass candleholders at yard sales that were 1/2 filled with melted & rehardened candle wax (non-dissipating type). Normally they can be a little difficult or time consuming to clean. If the old candle doesn't have the metal disk in the bottom, you can put the glass candleholder in the microwave. But, keep an eye on it while it's in the microwave, don't walk away from it. It usually only takes about 10-15 seconds. The wax softens up enough to just dump the old candle right out and there's barely any candle wax left to clean off.

Use old credit cards or old gift cards as scrapers. That's a tip someone posted here at MC years ago and I've used it ever since. (Thanks, whoever it was!) They're excellent for scraping the remains from pots and pans before washing them.

An easy way to remove pet hair from your broom. (Years ago, I submitted this tip at Libman.com and won a Libman Wonder Mop for it.) If you have pets, after sweeping the floor, to remove the pet hair from your broom take it outside and sweep the patio. The cement texture takes the pet hair right off the broom.

I use toothpaste to get the smell out of baby bottles and cups with sippy lids.

Dishwasher gel to clean the sink. It removes all the food stains and is much cheaper then soft scrub.

Dishwasher soap to clean old coolers. Use a sponge scrubbie and some dishwasher gel to get the dirt off the handle and around the outside (and inside). Wahla, you have a new looking cooler.

I remember when Cici used to write the MC Blog and she would post all the uses of something every Monday. I miss those blogs.

Our little dog is 16 years old and has 'accidents' at night. So instead of buying the expensive doggie diapers, I went to Wal-Mart and bought the Wal-Mart brand of regular baby diapers. (His size is for 16-28 lbs.) I cut a hole for his tail and put them on him (with the cute little animal print at the top of his back!) If he wets himself during the night, it doesn't get him or his bedding wet now. I just take them off him in the morning, wrap it in a plastic bag and throw it away. Works like a charm. And lots less expensive. I get 40 for somewhere around $6.00.

Use windex for nail polish spills on carpet (I spilled a bottle of purple nail polish on gray carpet - windex was the only thing that worked - nail polish remover just smudged it).

I'm not sure if it's still sold, but you used to be able to buy packages of Sharpies in various shades of brown, meant to cover wood scratches. I'm pretty sure they were just the usual ink. Those things come in so many colors, I'd think you could cover all sorts of chips and scratches, and they're permanent.

Speaking of windex...spray a little on grass stains and rub a little, or use a toothbrush to scrub. Good bye grass stains.
