Yes, we have cut out some trips this year that we normally would take because of gas prices. We would normally go to OKC on day trips (70 miles away, 140 miles rountrip plus $5 in tolls) during the summer, one day to the Zoo, one day to the Softball World Series, one day shopping, one day to Frontier City amusement park, one day to a museum. This year we are cutting waaaay back on the trips, We did the Softball World Series and may?? do the Frontier City trip, haven't really decided yet. The other trips are gone, just not going to do it this year. We also used to just drive into town (25 miles, 50 rountrip) to go shopping and lunch or to the library a couple of times a week during the summer. We are not doing that this year, only going into town to go to a store when we have to go for something else like a doctor/dentist appointment or working or pitching practice or something like that, no special trips are made. Only eating out once a month.

YES!!! We normally go to San Francisco every summer to visit my family. We can't go. We try to go camping as much as possible this year we will be lucky to go once. We have a wedding to go to and that will cost us in gas what we could have used on a camping trip but we have to go. It' s not just gas prices it's all prices and the hours cut at work for me and my husband's work no longer allows OT. Plus we live one gallon of gas from town so we limit our trips to the dog park, the mall, the lake, the movies, and forget about eating out! We used to do that several times a week last summer this year maybe once every two weeks and then only at the all you can eat buffet. On the plus side we are enjoying our backyard and laughing about how fun it is to stay home. At least my husband gets to sleep in on Fridays and Saturdays now instead of me waking him up with excitement for what we are doing that day.

We don't have much planned. We have season tickets to Busch Gardens courtesy of DH's work. In past years we would go 3 or 4 times a month, but we'll be lucky to go that many times this summer. It's about 100miles round trip, so in our Expedition, it's about $25 in gas, in addition to any food expenses at the park. DH does have a couple of business trips this summer-hoping that the 2 younger boys and I can tag along for a bit of a vacation.

Usually we go camping three times during summer break, but this year we are doing (maybe) two. One is already paid for, so that makes it easier to go. We also usually go to one zoo (since the closest is 90 miles away)...but will probably pass that up this year. We will be doing a lot of tag-along trips with DH when he goes out of town for work. Business pays for the hotel and gas...which means just food bill for us. The kids enjoy staying in hotels since they get to have whatever breakfast they want (continental breakfast included with room) and get to swim all day. The stimulas check sure didn't go far...didn't get to stimulat anything for us...just paid bills and for the pig we were raising. Guess I need to be happy the freezer will be full of pork and beef.

We haven't changed anything we are just cutting back on things. For example for vacation we still went but we only ate out a couple of times for the entire trip. As for errands and such I combine trips as much as possible. I no longer go to the town over for cheaper groceries. The price is evening out when figuring in gas prices. |

We sold our older heavy camper last summer and bought an ultralite....that has saved us gas mileage big time since we are pulling 3,000 less lbs. I have booked more trips to state parks than private campgrounds, and save money on fees, arcades and the kids have been enjoying themselves on their scooters, the pools and hikes and fishing. We are going to the finger lakes in two weeks....got a lake front site (Lake Seneca) for under $20 a night.....we are also taking our rowboat. The camper has saved us so much money over the years. We make many meals in the camper. If we are on "vacation" we eat out a bit more, if we are camping we bring and prepare our own food. because of the camper, and where we live, we are able to access everything from Canada to Virginia and all points east (plus lots of beautiful local state parks, PA is truly a beautiful state) within a few hours drive. We just came back from Avalon NJ (DS ((8)) caught a three foot sand shark), went everywhere, ate seafood out and caught or bought seafood for me to prepare "home". The difference in what we pay for a campsite, and what a hotel costs, gas would have to double to make it uneconomical. Plus, I like my own bed and stuff |

Not really. I try to combine errands when I'm out, but we're still taking our vacation. We're going to drive to the Grand Canyon and make a big circle down through TX, over through NM & AZ and then up and back home. It will be about 3000 miles. We're not taking our camper, though. That would really drain the gas! We've been using it more locally. Lisa

we sold our big 38 ft motor home when gas started to climb. no way could we fill up that thing at these prices. we used to fill it up 6 times a summer and it was over 100 dollars then. now it would be waaaaayyyy more. no longer are motor homes a cheap vacation unless you aint going very far.

The only way I could go camping is if ALL the bugs in the entire world were to die.

I have been trying to combine errands and not just run around town alot. We still go camping, and am actually camping right now on a 10 day trip. I also have a few trips planned to see family and am not canceling those, I know it would kill my parents not to get to see the grandkids! |

DH is an assitant scoutmaster and will be driving several hours to this summers' Scout deal. Helps that one of our kids is also scout and will be going to scout camp, otherwise we wouldn't be able to justify the driving. 2 of our kids who have never had the opportunity for summer camp in the past will go this year, only because they will be able to take the camp bus and will be able to work during during camp time to offset the fees., much, much, much cheaper than us driving them. We have cut back, severely on our driving. Almost 2 years (here in the Mid-West) when gas was about 2.50/gal, we saw the writing on the wall and I resigned my social services position that I enjoyed, because at those prices , and the driving I had to do (despite mileage re-reimbursement), we knew we couldn't afford for me to keep working, even though I made good money at that time.. We, as a family that is larger than average, knew at that time that we'd be pinched, even at *those*gas prices. Now it costs $1.50 + a gal more than at that time, and it was was more than we could foresee us handling easily back then. DH has recently suggested that we get a motor scooter for *my* everyday jaunts, or something to handle his long distance commute. We've gone through every possible option at this point, and to date have not figured out exactly how em will handle this all. I have cut back soooooooooooo much on driving in the past 6 mos. that it would better for DH to find a more economical way to get to work, about an hour's drive away. A motorcycle, highway worthy scooter, electric cars, and our pathethically poor public trans. we here yet to have figure how to make make it work within our budget, we're stilgoing day to day and paycheck to paycheck, a new thing for us. Right now we are at the point where DH needs to find a better (more affordable) way to get to work. DH is an inventor (aside from his salaried job) and has a stupendous way to offset all of this jazz that comes w/the rise in gas prices, but he and his partner aren't yet at the point where their stupendous invention will make a diff. For most our married life (30 + years) we have generally been okay, have even been finacially better off than most of those we know, but that is no longer true.. Almost anybody isn't free these days from the economic throes these days. DH earns a way better better than average salary in our area, but we are still struggling financially. The kids make more runs to the grocery store these days (on foot or bike for us, about a mile away), and we are driving waaaaaay leess than than we would have done even 6 mos. ago. We try as much as we can to consolidate errands that require driving, it's been real eye opener for us. MZ |

Majorly yes. We live about an hour from the beach and haven't been once. I even try to run errands on the way home from work rather than make a special trip out on my off day. We live out of the city, and the gas is really kicking a$$ out here.

We're taking quite a few more trips this summer than we normally do, but all within a couple of hours of our house. We've been to Philly, we're spending a couple of days in Baltimore, and two trips to the Jersey shore. For us, though, it's no added expense as far as gas. Dh works an hour away from here, so if he takes two days off of work for a trip then that's 4 hours worth of gas freed up. Plus, a relative works for the Hyatt so we can stay for free or for a very low family rate (our Philly trip cost $75 for two nights as opposed to the $500 it would've been if I'd booked it myself). Dh gets free passes from work for all the major Baltimore attractions, like the zoo, aquarium and science center. The shore trips will be staying with friends/relatives, so there won't be any expenses beyond food. I guess we could always vacation at home since we live in a tourist area (Lancaster), but the kids love to see new places. Maybe next year, though! Maureen |
