I have an ulcer on my leg but with no insurance, they sent me home with antibiotics & fluid pills!

I would imagine that staying off your feet with them elevated would help also. If the antibiotic instructions say twice a day, I'd take it 12 hrs. apart. Three times a day, every eight hrs., you get the drift. This way the medication is constant. If the fluid pill is Lasix, it works wonders. |

You have to take this serious!! Keep your leg elevated as much as possible. Take the antibiotics exactly on time. If the ulcer is draining, make sure to keep it covered with a dressing. If it's staph, and most are these days, it's highly contagious and can be very serious. Have someone else change your sheets, towels, wash them in hot water and throw them in the dryer. Wash hands at every opportunity. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Also, an anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen would make it feel alot better. I'm not sure why they gave you fluid pills, you need to be well hydrated to speed up the healing. You can usually get rid of the swelling by staying off your feet and keeping the leg propped up. Take care, and keep us posted!!

I was too tired to post much last night but I still need prayers! I have a stasis ulcer on my leg... It weeps runny clear stuff out of it... My blood work all came back fine but the nurse practioner says it is really bad & she doesn't think one round of antibiotics will cure it so she told me to come back to her next weekend... So that is where I am right now & with no insurance, there isn't a whole lot anyone is really going to do... Thanks for the thoughts & prayers!

How awful. I have been thinking about you since yesterday! Can you apply for Medicaid? At least that way you would have some insurance. I hope it gets better, keep us informed!!

A couple of friend were just telling me today that they don't have insurance and they get a discount for being self-pay. I had never heard of this! I would imagine it would be up to the doctor...but she said they pay $40 to see the doctor (his normal charge is $185) and that he gives them whatever meds they need...no scrip they have to take to a pharmacy. She also told me that her son recently had to go to the hospital and the bill came with a total of around $750 but her "cash" pay portion was only around $185. I've never heard anything like this...but maybe something to look into?? peapie |

Plus, there's Wal-Mart pharmacy and possibly others that have a $4 list of prescription meds. Even with drug insurance I still use this. The trick is to tell them you don't have insurance to be filed and the cost will be $4. Just ask your doctor if there is a med on the $4 list that will work. That's what I did last year when I had a sinus infection. |

My oldest DD doesn't have insurance right now . She got sick and had to go to the dr. Of course I'm at work and can't go with her. She told the front desk and the dr. that she didn't have insurance, please only do what is necessary. After all was said and done, she came home with a bill of over $400, with all kinds of blood work that seemed ridiculous to me. I called and spoke with the office manager , who spoke with the dr., and they agreed to only charge us what insurance would have paid. It came to $160, which is quite a difference from $400. Her OB-GYN also only charges what ins. would normally pay. All dr's offices have samples, usually if you let them know you are having a problem covering RX's, they can either give you samples, or at least write for you to have generics. Thank God for the $4 RX's! What a God send for so many people. There's help out there, you just have to be very pro-active.

We have a new health care place here in my town called Redi Care. They only take people with No Insurance, and the Dr only charges a little for a visit. They did a write on him in our paper. He said this way people with no insurance get medical help, and his office is not very busy so he can spend more time per person. I think that's great and about time something like this happened!
