Pizza Day every Thursday! Yum!! It was made w/a thick crust, and it was everyone's favorite.

Least favorite - Salisbury Steak (and sadly, I always wasted the cole slaw. Ewwww - not a kid food)

In junior high, the bread sticks and cookies were awesome.
High school I lived on cans of Hawaiian punch and bagels for lunch.

Our Lunch Lady made everything homemade. She made the BEST yeast rolls on the East Coast. 200% better than Golden Corrals. She made those things every morning for our lunch. Her Cheeseburger Pizza which was a Friday thing was my favorite. My least favorite was Navy Beans with PB and J. It was still good but I never looked forward to Navy Bean day..lol. She also made homemade Cinnamon Rolls every morning for Breakfast that were to die for. Huge and melt in your mouth. She retired about 3 years ago but all the kids (even mine) still talk about the three things I mention. She made them until she retired. Yum...!

The least favorite was some horrible minced up shreadded meat in a horrible sauce. I'm pretty sure it was canned..We called it "mystery meat" & no one would eat it. This was the late 40's, early 50's...always thought it was leftover from WWII...LOL...

Best thing were some cinnamon twists that we started getting about junior high. My Mom & the head lunch lady went to the same church & I was always trying to get my Mom to get the recipe, but she was never able to. They were so light, just the right amount of cinnamon & probably brown sugar. Seems there might have been a little vanilla icing glaze dribbled on too.

Here it is 50 years later & my taste buds still remember them !!

Pizza was a favorite. I remember in high school they had "deli" days. Those were good sandwiches. I hated the hamburgers and fish. Yuck!

I don't remember the elementary school lunches too much. I think I took my lunch. I do know that every Friday was fish day...YUCK. The square fish patties, cole slaw and mashed potatoes. Oh the smell through the school was terrible.
In high school, I lived off of yeast rolls, french fries and ice cream. Healthy and no carbs at all, LOL! But the rest of the food looked and smelled awful. If they didn't have 1 of the 3 things mentioned, I skipped lunch and ate when I got home in the afternoon.

My favorites were fries w/ gravy, bratwurst from the wurst lady, and burritos from the Dog Stand. MMMM...

I think I loved those nasty hamburgers. My Mom hated it because she made us a beautiful lunch every day and we complained because we wanted the school lunches! Most of the school lunch kids, I later found out, would have gladly traded for Mom's homemade lunches! The grass is always greener...

These days they have Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in the school cafeteria!

Pizza burgers on the buns.Anything else and I would not eat it.Unless it was a hotdog, cookie or fruit related.99% of the time I gave what ever was on my plate to my best friend who sat next to me at lunch time. She was a very thin girl who LOVED to eat and she could eat 10 plates of food and never gain an ounce.
School cafeteria food always made me queasy just smelling it.YUCK!!!
I always looked forward to comming home to eat supper.Mom always fixed yummy suppers.

I used to love school pizza. You know the long rectangle piece of pizza that had so much grease on it you had to dab it with a napkin kind. lol.

Can't remember what I least liked. Maybe because I just skipped lunch on those days or bought pizza if it was an option.

The school lunches today are just gross!!! I promised myself I wasn't going to support them anymore. I feel bad for my kids because they come back hungry. It is my opinion that the school district officials should eat lunch there (with the tiny portions they make us get- we have to get the same size as the kids, with a higher price!)

I really didn't care much for school lunch... I liked the rolls, and ranch fritos. I would sell my lunch, and use the money to buy said fritos lol.

Why oh why doesn't someone still do this in your area and everywhere else. It is so much cheaper and nutritionally better to make food from scratch. You can't tell me there are not ladies (and men) in every school disctrict in the USA that can cook from scratch and need a job.

This is one more piece of proof that the people who make the decisions are either complete idiotic morons or just woefully incompetent or just don't give a care about our kids.

It's a stretch to remember back THAT far but.....

Fave would have to be the Pizza Fridays (now my girls love pizza Fridays too!)

Least fave would have to be S.O.S. I like it when I make it at home but the school's.....BLECH!

My least favorite was the nasty pizza!, always pepperoni ( gag). My most favorite "meal" was the "tuna salad plate". That was just a scoop of tuna on lettuce with a roll, with carrot and celery sticks. The real winner was the peanut butter blondies that were always on fridays with the nasty pizza....lol Those would sell out quickly! We were only allowed one each until all lunches were served because no-one would eat otherwise!

I have been trying to find/copy that recipe for years with no luck!

semi-decent / safe >>>>> fish sticks

gross / wouldn't eat if I was starving >>>>>mystery meat ( hamburger/salsbury steak/smothered in pizza sauce.....whatever other wild ideas they came up with to top said mystery meat)

funny memory from middle school in the 70's >>>>>>> every time the custodian, Mr. Johnson, was out cutting the grass, the cafateria served nasty, no seasoning, disgusting, yucky spinach. EVERY time he mowed the grass. I still to this day can not eat a big old heaping serving of cooked spinach. I can it if it is a small part of a recipe, or say in spinach dip......just not plain cooked spinach!!!!!!!

in the early days, when I lived in Hawaii, as a military brat, if we came to school early enough, we got peanut butter and butter sandwiches--yes, peanut butter on one slice of bread, and butter on the other. There is nothing better! No arteries being clogged there! But still, I'm hooked. Try it, you will like it!

This reminds me of a friend who loves peanut butter and cheese sandwiches. He tries to make it healthier by using no/low fat peanut butter and low fat cheese. Double yuck!!
