bread, been making it for 3-4 years now. yogurt, plain. we don't eat sweetened yogurt, for 2-3 years. recently i started making icecream. kitchen disinfectant(sp?), white vinegar and water, also good for glass cleaning. i would like to start making cheese, i am talking about cheddar and such i don't know how hard is it. i make some ethnic white cheese, it is not the same as we make it back home(we use sheep milk, i use just regular milk), but it is close enough. i don't make it always though.

I dont buy prepared foods at all, I make everything myself...no box mixes or bottles (other than ketchup LOL)..my cupboards are filled with whole foods like flour, sugar, cocoa, molasses, maple syrup ,beans/peas, grains, spices, some home made pasta (I do buy some),dairy products, and vegetables, fruits and jelly I canned. Right now we are having a broccoli boom, so I have been blanching, freezing and preparing broccoli dishes...last night I made home made pasta with olive oil, garlic and broccoli. tonight, maybe a quiche... I have never tried making my own laundry detergent, although I use things like baking soda, vinegar and bleach for cleaning. |

Dh makes our bar soap -- it's a lye based recipe and it's absolutely wonderful. I don't know if we save any money by making it but he enjoys the hobby and the soap is better than anything you can buy. I make all purpose cleaner with vinegar, water and essential oil. I make most of our meals from scratch. I just made about a gallon of turkey stock on Saturday. I make pizza from scratch. Sometimes we make our bread. I make curtains and seat cushion covers and anything else I can sew for the house.

I don't buy many boxed foods. Maybe mac & cheese so the sitter has something easy to make if we are gone. I just started making our own boulee and baggette bread instead of buying it at the store. I still buy whole wheat bread for sandwiches though...I can't get mine to turn out well. I also don't buy cake mix or brownie mixes (but that goes alongside box stuff). I also don't buy marinades and I make homemade BBQ sauce. I recently started making ice cream although that's maybe once every other month (we don't eat a lot of desserts). I try to avoid packaged items due to the added preservatives and sodium.

I also make my own BBQ sauce. I think it's much better than store bought. I don't make bread, but I make biscuits from scratch.. also much better than canned.

I make my own laundry soap and I make most of my household cleaners. My favorite is a water/vinegar/baking soda/tea tree oil (a natural antiseptic) combo that I got from the BBC show 'How Clean is Your House'. It costs pennies to make and does a really good job cutting grease and cleaning up. I use it on my floors, too. Maureen |
