Tattoos.....

What do you all think about tattoos... do you think they look nice? do you think they look trashy no matter what it is? I have a small rose on my back that I got back in 1992, I was thinking about getting another one, maybe a small dragonfly or butterfly on my foot. what would you get if you got one? what do you already have if you have one? just wondering what everyone thought about it

I think Tattoos are very tasteful if done on the right place!....... I have 4 of them, 2 of them you can see if my shoes are off , ankle and top of foot........ a rose and a butterfly, 1 on my left shoulder blade , and another one ......well we wont talk about it.....lol

you only see the one on my shoulder if I am wearing a sleeveless shirt. I have seen some big time UGLY TRAMP STAMPS!!!

I waitied until I was almost 40 yrs old to get my first in Vegas and the rest followed. They all represent a stage in my life. I wouldnt change a thing about them at all.

The rose I got when I won 7,000$ on craps in Vegas , the butterfly, the day I was free from my 1st hubby,
the one on my shoulder I got with my new hubby, and the other for kicks......figured he is the only one that will see it.

I want one more , but I am a bit leary. might be on my other foot. who knows, I guess when the whim hits me I may do it. I do want to say, I love my tatts, and they do look nice, I have had plenty of compliments. I know some of you do not like them so lets just keep the negative comments do a small roar.......lol

I have two--a Razorback on my calf, and a cartoon devil on my rt shoulder. My next one is going to be a cartoon angel on my left shoulder.

I like tattoos. I find them strangley appealing--both getting them and on other people. It's not for everyone. They are permanent (as you know! LOL) thus I would never get one with anyone's name, except for my children.

My tattoos did not hurt when I got them--heck I even dozed off while getting the devil!!

I'm on the other side. DH nor I have any, nor will we ever have any. I hope my kids never get them, but whatever they do after they are 18 and gone is their business. We have family members who have them and love them. Personally, I don't get it, but that's just me. I don't like them at all.

Ooooo! I'd LOVE your pain tolerance!

I HATE that my tolerance is so low, but I'd love to get a tattoo sometime. Both my sisters have them, they look very nice.

Maybe someday I'll get the nerve! (Heh, no pun intended. )

I have a 'tramp stamp' but it is NOT trampy. It's a patriotic butterfly with a hand drawn tribal on each side (it's a one of a kind tat) and a rose with a sunburst on my right arse cheek. Dh says this one looks like a venus (altho he uses the 'p' word instead...rhymes with venus......) fly trap. I like that one alright but my back tat is my fave....I KNEW I wanted a butterfly, but I also wanted something patriotic, and when I saw the red/white/blue butterfly, I was hooked. I am ready for a 3rd, and I already know where it's going...ankle/foot...just don't know what I want to get yet. I got the arse one a couple of years before dh and I got married and he got me my back tat for my 39th birthday.

None here either. I think they don't look good on people in their 80's and I intend to be 80 some day. I don't really think that I've ever seen a tatoo that looks good either, but that's me! I don't wear much jewelry or other adornments either. I'm really just a boring ol' Plain Jane but my family loves me for who I am. Thankfully.

I'm going to get a butterfly on my left butt cheek. I wanted it before I turned 35, but didn't make it.

I really like them sometimes and sometimes I think they are trashy. I don't like "tramp stamps"...no matter how pretty. Like arm bands, they are a *bandwagon* thing for most people with no real meaning. I don't hate them but I wouldn't get one there. I don't have any and either does DH but both of us want one. For me, it's placement...not sure but I have a fun *sexysmurf* ready to go (smurfette in a bikini). DH has a place but hasn't figured out the design yet. I figure he'll get one when he gets another piercing (has one nipple pierced and wants the other one done). I really enjoy admiring the tats on people...the artwork can be amazing! I would never want to be covered head to toe but that said, I wouldn't want to be dressed like a Paris Hilton wannabe either...too each their own

Irish, did the foot tat hurt really bad?? I was told when I got my back tat that it would hurt the most closest to the spine....but mine hurt the farther he went out from the spine. Just wondered what kind of pain I'll be in for when I get my ankle/foot tat.

I have 3 (well 3 but was done in 4 sittings). I have a custom whale and dolphin around my belly button looking like they are coming out of a tunnel with fish around. I have a dolphin jumping out of the water on my hip (dolphin was done first then the water/waves was second) and I just got one Sunday on the top of my foot. My DH designed it. It is a Q with an A on the inside of it and a S going through the A. It is the first letter of my 3 kids names. It really did hurt on my foot but the day I got it I was already trying to figure out what I was getting on the other foot. Now My DH had a celtic circle on his upper arm and Monday he got a huge tribal dragon with the same symbol as I got incorporated into it on his shoulder. And he is his already thinking of his next one. They are not for everyone but to each his own.

None here, but I'm reminded of this:

Two old ladies walked into a tattoo shop to have a look around. A young woman was having a beautiful rose tattoo placed on her breast. "Isn't that gorgeous?" said the first old lady. "Yes, it is!", replied the second. "By the time she's our age, she'll have a hanging basket!"

(Sorry......couldn't resist)

I have 1 with plans of at least 2 more. Mine on my ankle is a crescent moon smiling. It is a one of a kind. I was 26 when I got it, I took several years considering the pros and cons. I love it!

I have 2. My fist one is a paw print on the top of my right foot. I got it after my first daughter was born. I went with a friend, took my daughter and it was a blast. Whenever I look down on it I smile. My other tatoo my Mom got me for my birthday last year. It's on my left wrist and is a blazing sun with my zodiac sign in the center. I like them both. They are easy to hide if I know I'm going someplace where tatoos are not ok. After my first one my Dad even talked about possibly getting one. I don't think that a person who puts thought and emotion into the design of their tatoo will ever out grow it. My only advice is, make sure you understand what you are getting put on your body, and put a lot of thought into it.

I find them very interesting and love to look at them on OTHERS. I would never get one, and it is against my DH's religion to get one, so he's out.

I just know that I would never be able to settle on a permanent symbol that would be a part of me forever. If I did settle on one, I'm pretty sure it would be a word or words rather than an image. But I don't see that in my future, either.

I feel bad that they've become so "trendy" with kids in teens/early twenties, because I don't think most people in that age group have true long term "vision" (for lack of a better word). I think tattoo removal is going to be BIG business in years to come!

I love hearing what tattoos people got, and where they had them placed, but I can't imagine there is anything I'd ever want added to any part of my body that I could never take off.

My MIL's best friend had her makeup tattooed permanently to her face. That is so fascinating to me! It's been about 8 years, and obviously the kind of makeup look that was big in the year 2000 has already changed...she's really going to look like she's in a time warp soon!

However, I am so taken with IrishBlonde's use of tattoos that commemorate different major milestones in her life! If I was into them, I think I'd want to do that. And I think you're ready for a "granny" tattoo!

I have one on my finger that I HATE!!! My ex was giving himself one and I asked if it hurt. He said "give me your hand" and I (stupidly) did. I thought there wasn't any ink but there was. I now have 3 dots on my right middle finger. I want to get it turned into a heart.

I also want to get one on my side. I have it drawn up (custom). It is 2 open Stargazer Lilies and 3 buds (symbolizing me, DH and our 3 kids). I want it high on my side so it can only be seen when I am wearing my swim suit. Now I just need the cash to get it done (maybe for our 10 anniversary next year).

I have 4 and I'm not against getting anymore. Each represent a different period in my life. I have 2 kanji symbols, a heart with my husband's nickname in it and the words "strength" and "courage", and I have a time.

hashbug : The letters for your childrens names sound really cool, if I could think of or do something creative like that for my kids I would def. do it! my neice did flowers on her foot for each of her kids birth months, I looked into that but didnt like the flowers for my kids...

After a while the vibration of the ink gun causes the body part to almost go numb.

I chose my Razorback because I'm from Arkansas--am a rabid Univ of Ark. football fan and I'm very proud of my Arkansas roots (and nothing symbolizes Arkansas more than the "running Razorback")

My devil and when I get it is symbolic of what everyone faces every day--making choices. Sometimes we go w/ the lil devil and have a second piece of cake, and sometimes we go w/ the angel and have some fresh fruit (just an example).

After my angel, I'm going to have an ankle bracelet designed by "my" tattoo guy w/ my kids' name in it.

Both of my sisters have several, my niece has a couple. They aren't for everyone--but there's nothing wrong w/ tats. I want to get inked by Ami from Miami Ink! He's so cute!!! LOL

maryelizz: Yeah it took me 6 years to figure out what I wanted for my next tattoo. DH and I got to talking about it one night and messing around drawing things and I really wanted something with my kids names or to do with my kids and this was just perfect and created by my DH made it even better.

I don't want one for myself, but other people's tattoos are sometimes nice looking..others are not attractive to me at all but nothing wrong with people getting them. These days, it seems like everyone has them! Several of dd's classmates at age 15,16 etc got inked along with their moms.

I do find it funny when I go into an office where the dress code says tattoos have to be covered...like our local cable company/call center, you can see about 20 or 30 people from the main office and half of them with their faces, arms, necks covered in bandaids and ace bandages. I guess the ace bandages are for the bigger ones lol

I have a small rose on my breast, a moon & star on my forehead, a Greenman on my back, a Triple Moon on my inner wrist, vines and roses starting at my shoulder and winding around my arm trailing off down my finger, and Mendhi designs around both ankles, top of left foot and toes on left foot and along the side of my right foot. DH has more tattoos than I can count :-) Yes, the top of my foot and toes hurt the most of any of them but, considering I've given birth five times, none of them have been too bad in comparison - LOL! DH says the one inside his lip was a bit ouchy. I plan to get more and I fully expect they will look quite different when I'm 80, just as the rest of me will look quite different (everything sure looks different at 44 than it did at 18 ;-)

I have a butterfly on my lower back. I got it when I was 18. It still looks nice, but i told myself I wouldn't get anymore because of the pain.
I think i am ready again, but my DH does not really love them. ehh not decided yet.

I like to look at what other people get. my friend has a heart made with a key on her inner wrist. I think it's neat, but might find it hard to be taken as a professional if I had something like that.

my workplace allows any tattoos and and piercings. we are lucky, but not all workplaces are so liberal.

My foot tats didnt hurt at all. But I do have a high tolerance for pain. at times!

the top of the foot I could feel a bit , only because there is no fat there, just skin. lol slight buzzing. Once the outline is on there the skin is numb. My hubby has 3 tatts. on both of his shoulder blades , and a tribal Irish arm band . they Or WE didnt have it closed because that would have been another 150.00 $. He has large "guns"... lol

I will post some picts I have of my tatts ..as soon as I find them.

When I was in vegas, there is a guy who lives next door to my brother. His name is Eric "Big E" Pele , he worked for Hart & Huntington Tattoo Company. He is also a wrestler. He now has his own business. He is the greatest. He did my first. My second was done by a friend who has a businnes, but the day my divorce became final, I went to his house put my foot on his table and he did my butterfly. (Was all sterile). I would have let him ink me all day because it didnt hurt. lol

the others have been done in the past 2 years. The tatts on my ankle and foot, need a little filled in. If you stay in the sun too much they do tend to fade. Most artist will discourge you from getting them there.

Never ever in a million years. No offense to those of you that have them, honestly. But I am a nurse, and I know that when we have a pt. that has one, someone always says inevitably" Put on your gloves" when we are hooking them up. Kelly Ripa said something the other day that I thought summed it all up. She said that having a tatoo(which she does, and was referring to)was like getting up everyday and putting on the same shirt, everyday. Who wants to wear the same shirt everyday??? Anyways , maybe it's just me, I'm sorry ta all of you, I can;t stand them!! Maybe it's a cultural thing, but to me, they are just so low class! WWWWOOOOOOHHH, I'm ready for the flames!!! And I'm really not trying to be ugly, I'm sorry, I just can't imagine knowing that you want to display something on your body for the rest of your life. What about sagging? Drooping??

None, and don't want one, but I like looking at them on other people. The only thing that gets me is the kind where you can know how old they are just by looking. Kanji for something or other? Late 90's-early 2000's. Tribal armband? A few years before that. And targets are 2003-ish.

I consider my tattoo invaluable. It helps me sort out the people I want to know, from the people I don't. Anybody who'd think less of me, or refuse to associate with me simply because I have one - I don't want to know them. I'm sure its spared me a lot of time and trouble over the years.

Don't you hae a piece of jewelry that means a lot to you that you wear every day?

Some tattoos are the same thing. They are decorative, hold a special sentimental value and you can't imagine NOT having them.

(oh and the comment about gloving up---that's ignorance talking. As an EMT (retired) I can honestly say that tattoos did not influence our decision to follow univeral precaustions)

That's how I feel about my back tat. I've had it for 4 years now and I couldn't imagine NOT having it. I think it's cool that I 'carry a flag' wherever I go. The guy who did it (very clean place and my neighbor who is a nurse went with me and got one too) is very talented and for sure will be doing my next one.

Whether of not it looks trashy depends on the tatttoo and where it is.

But I have strong opinions about this. I am 46 yrs old. I have several tattoos I got when I was in my early 20s. I HATE THEM!!!
If I could cut them out or scrape them off I would!
it's like picking out a hairdo or pair of pants and wearing it the rest of your life!
They do not respresent the woman I am. People constantly judge me by them I have missed out on jobs, dates (when I was single) and other things.
I cannot wear a backless gown or any formal dress for that matter.

I have one on my left leg one on my left arm one on my left shoulderblade and one on my left boob.

Especially horrifying is the one on my arm because there it is all the time.

I suggest to young people not to get them. Getting married or going to a formal business affair, going to a vacation spot, etc people look at me they judge me.

If you did not like say heavy metal music or country music you would not want to walk around with a bumper sticker on your head for that type of music. Well a tattoo is something you may not like in later years.

I am a completely different person than I was 20 yrs ago. The one thing I would change about my body if I could is to get these stupid things off.

The back tattoo just above your hiney, in the small of your back. Not sure where exactly the term came from tho....

I don't like that they've become "trendy" with the young adults, and even teens, either. Like I told DS when he was 20.... No matter how smart, experienced or worldly you think you are today, I promise in 5 years you'll look back and think, "Man, I was stupid back then.". He's 24 now but it didn't even take him 2 years to say it. (LOL)

DS has a tattoo on his upper arm of a big dragon w/blue and white flames and it's holding an orb. The orb has some Japanese symbol on it. I think he said it means stength, but I told him it could mean "NancyBoy" for all he knows. (LOL) He's had it for 3-4 years now. I was against him getting a tattoo because he's my baby and I didn't give birth to him that way. (I told him the only tattoo he could get was a heart that said "MOM" on it. LOL ) But, he's grown so what could I do. He had everything done on it except fill in the color of the orb because he couldn't decide what color he wanted. So, I figured if I couldn't prevent the tattoo at least I could offer color scheme advice. He liked my idea and had his tattoo completed as I suggested. (Yellow in the center of the orb graduating to orange at the outer circumference, kind of like fire.) The yellow & orange really "pop" because the rest of the tattoo is basically black, blue and a little white. He liked that I offered the advice (I guess it made him feel like I was finally accepting of it.) and I liked that he took my advice (He still thinks Mom's cool. ) So, I kind of feel like his tattoo was a conjointed effort and somewhat of a bonding experience. And, now I just pretend the Japanese symbol says "MOM". (LOL)

I don't have any tattoos myself and I don't plan on getting any. (However, I have considered getting permanent eyebrows and eyeliner before.) I've seen too many tattoos on women that just look sooooo tacky. I think they look better on guys, it just seems like more of a masucline thing to me. On a woman, I think a tiny discreet tattoo (ladybug, butterfly, etc.) can look cute. And at the other extreme, I also think multiple tattoos (full back w/wo sleeves) can look artistically appealing on a person (guy or gal) with the physique for it. But, they're probably not going to have that physique forever. Plus, you have to keep getting them retouched to keep them looking nice. They look ghetto when they fade. (Like chipped up nail polish.) I guess the ones I really don't care for are things like... a big Tweety Bird on your chest. To me, that just looks so trashy. (Sorry if anyone here has Tweety on their chest. Not trying to offend anyone, JMO.)

(oh and the comment about gloving up---that's ignorance talking. As an EMT (retired) I can honestly say that tattoos did not influence our decision to follow univeral precaustions)
Yes, we have our favorite jewelry but you don't have to put it on if you decide not to. I think that's the big difference. They are permanent. I don't like 'em but if someone else likes them that's cool. What WILL they look like at 80?? lol I hate seeing so many young people get them because peoples tastes change, etc... over the years.

That's exactly why I've never gotten one and never really considered it. I hate learning things the hard way, so I guess I tend to analyze everything to death and try to weigh all my options. And, I could easily see how someone could regret it down the road, for exactly the reasons you've mentioned. I'm sorry you're stuck with them now, hindsight is 20/20.

I don't have any and would never get one, but I don't think any more or less of people that have them.

I'm far more skeeved out by facial and body piercings. They just make me cringe. Tattoos, well whatever makes your boat float!

I don't care what it would look like when I'm 80. First, if I live that long I'll be shocked. My grandparent that lived the longest was only in their late seventies. Second, I'll probably have some dementia so I won't even remember it's there.

And no one has to see my tats unless I want them to. In fact, unless I actually tell someone I have tats--they don't know. My calf one is most visible--but, if I have to I can cover it.
I don't generally cover them. I love them, they are a part of me.

Not only that but tats are an awesome way to identify a missing person, or a deceased body (tattoos have their own seperate space when you file a missing person report through NCIC--FBI database--via law enforcement)

Then again, if you're planning a life of crime, tattoos are a BAD idea.

I could care less what other people do to their own bodies. I'd prefer my son to wait till he's at least 30, but since he can't deal w/ pain, I'm not worried, lol. I would love to get one of a wedding ring on my ring finger, but I keloid and I have NO pain tolerance (dh has to hold me down when I have splinters).

As a nurse, I agree. I just don't think I would be comfortable with one. I do worry about infections, etc.

My oldest DD has one, against my pleadings! It is at the base of her neck. I told her now she will have to wear a turtleneck to her wedding!

My 2nd DD had told everyone at her lunch table that she had gotten a tatoo one weekend and insisted on seeing it. It was a freebie from pop-tarts. She is 18 and they all wanted one of those. (temp) They did laugh.

My 3 girls have talked about getting them one thier feet together when the 11 year old is 18 so they will have matching ones for all 3 of them. Different sized stars, small, med and large to represnt them.

My DS wants one but hasn't done it and I am thankful for that.

DH wants one but there is no way that I will ever get one. When I am old and in a nursing home bed, I don't want everyone talking about me!!!

Annadrose... I just heard an ad saying there is a new kind of lotion that you can rub on your tats and after so many uses they disappear even dark ones. I dont remember the name though. I want a tat but I am too nervous. I think my 15 yr old will get a tat next year or the one after. She has asked and I told her she has to wait til she is atleast 16. I dont have any problems with tats, especially pretty discreet ones.

I second this . I'm sure by the time I hit 80, I'll have other (female) parts drooping and sagging too.

I will never forget a very nicely planned church wedding I attended. The mother of the bride had a large (and imo ugly) tatto on her right back shoulder area. She chose to wear a strapless dress. The only time she had the light shawl across her shoulders, was for the photographs which obviously only had her with a front view.

The bride and her attendants all wore tasteful gowns and the choice of gown of the mother was a distraction.

Many people do get these and then regret it. I don't see it as cool, meaningful, or attractive in any way, shape or form.
