Here are some that I remember...

Wow - I love this thread!

Fayva - for shoes - I LOVED Fayva!
JM Fields - We loved this store! I still remember their going out of business sale - I stocked up on satin shorts! LOL (disco era)
Caldor - great store
Bradlees - this was our main department store in town.
Merry Go Round - I was too intimidated to go into this store - all the sales people were on commission on the one near us - I thought they'd tell me I looked good, even if they really thought I looked wacky.
Billy4
Zayres and Aames
Amazing Stores - Owned by "Mr. Amazing" - you could by "Elvis Presley Love Me Tender" hand lotion here for .97

Ahhh - now I'm feeling nostalgic...

Caldor - reminds me of a nicer version of KMart
Child World - I used to love that place when I was a kid
Abraham & Strauss (A&S) - clothing
Service Merchandise
Finast - food
Consumers Distributing - I had to look up the name on google - it was a catalog showroom store - you'd place an order from the catalog and wait for it to be brought out. kind of like Service Merchandise but much less merchandise on display.

Me too! You could find anything in that store that you needed. We had one when we lived in Hawaii...downtown Honolulu...1991...It was a two level store, which you don't see often...It had the best inexpensive souveniers! I had forgotten about some of the stores you all listed...

Korvettes, Benjamin Franklin (had that out in HI), Fayva, and Best! Another one I thought of just now was Upton's. They had them here in GA. When we first moved down here in 1996 I discovered them and loved shopping there! Are they still in business? ~Lisa

Tiedke's Department Store! (pronounced "TID-keys")

Rexall Drugstore - not sure if they went out of business or just moved out of the area where I grew up. Haven't seen one in years.

Hills-discount store similar to Ames
G.C. Murphy-the one where my grandma lived had an upstairs and downstairs
Super Duper-a grocery store, not sure if it was part of a chain. It was the best when we were little kids because it was the only grocery store that had LIVE lobsters in a tank in the meat department. We joke now that it was "Poor people's Sea World".

Some others also said Two Guys, when I was a kid that was the start of my favorite joke .
three men are in the waiting room at the hospital the nurse comes in and says "Mr Smith Congratulation you are the father of twins" He says t"thats funny, I work for Two Guys"
Soon the nurse comes in again " Mr Jones Congratulation you are the father of Triplets" He says "Thats funny, I work at 3M"
The third guy faints, they revive him and he says I work for 7Up!!!

Woolworths

My first job was at Woolworths...I just loved that store. That is also where my husband and I met....

McCurdy's

I left Woolworths to work at McCurdy's when I was still in HS - loved shopping there!! lol

Hermans World of Sporting Good

My husband worked there when he left Woolworths and until he graduated from college.

Kind of scary that all of our retail jobs have ended in stores closing......lol

We got back from 2 weeks in Europe (Scotland, Ireland, Paris, Amsterdam) and there were Woolworths all over Scotland and Ireland. GO figure.
