My DS made it to Nationals

My ds made it to nationals for throwing the mini javelin I am so proud of her she is 9 years old. I have one question though. Is it tacky to ask for donations to sponsor her from family and friends? We are going to Omaha, Ne from Illinois and with the cost of gas I was wondering if I should ask this of family and friends. I know I can get lots of honest answers here.

My girls go do dance nationals every year and I would never dream of asking anyone to help pay for it. Our studio does fund raisers which some people participate in if they want, but for myself, I feel it is an expense associated with doing that activity.

I don't know about javelin, but we are told up front before we ever join a team that there are 2 regionals and 1 nationals that you are expected to attend as part of that team. I hate paying for it, too, but I would not ask anyone to help pay for it.

JMO...

I personally don't see anything wrong with asking for sponsors and I would probably ask businesses before friends. You may be able to find a business who would in return for advertising for them. Or does she have time to maybe do a bake sale or something like that and earn money, if so then I'd mention to friends and family when it was so they could come by to support her.

Do you have fixed lodging costs associated with this trip, or are you able to cut back by finding your own? We often get rooms via Priceline in Omaha for around $40/night at the Crowne Plaza.

Personally I don't think I'd ask for sponsors for this.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have 2 weeks until we go, I was thinking about a business, but as far as a bake sale I dont think we will have time as she has another track meet the week before we go.

Is she going with a team? or just by herself? I know some quick fundraisers we have done to raise quick funds for a team event is sell Krspy Kreme donuts and a yard sale, both can be done quick.

Congrats to your daughter! I also second doing a quick go-see to see if you can perhaps find a company sponsor. I would find it difficult to ask friends/family for donations, but perhaps if they hear of your trip they may offer help themselves.

Congrats to your DD! As far as asking for donations, if I could afford it without great hardship, I would pay for it myself. If it will be a great hardship on you.... I think whether you ask your family and friends depends on how close you are with them. Is this something you think they'd be happy to help with if they knew it was going to be a hardship for you? If I had the money and one of my nephews or niece needed sponsorship, I wouldn't think it tacky at all. I'd be more than happy to help them realize a possibly once in a lifetime opportunity. After all, I buy that outrageously overpriced popcorn and other junk that the Boy Scouts sell. I don't need or want it, but I do it for my nephews who are in the Scouts. To me, that's no different than asking for sponsorship. Maybe your DD can make a T-shirt advertising her sponsors that she can wear up to her meet to make it more fun and official. (Brought to you by Aunt Carol, Uncle Jeff, etc.) That would allow her to outwardly show her appreciation for her sponsors and make her endeavor a real family affair.

Ms Miser thanks for the words of encouragement, I feel the same way about all the stuff I have bought for others kids...I am fortunate to have a great family and I think it encourages her when she sees that her fmily is willing to support her . I am so proud of her, she is doing something positive.
By the way the Nationals is at Burke High School in Omaha, an expected 6000 kids are expected to compete.

Isn't that what family is suppose to be all about? Good luck to you and your DD! Don't forget to let us know how she does at the nationals!
