Well, I can tell you that DS and DD saw Dark Knight today and I saw Mamma Mia. They were RAVING about Dark Knight. It's 2 1/2 hours long.

I thought Mamma Mia was just OK. It would be a good matinee movie. If you've ever seen the stage show I think you will be disappointed with the singing! I don't know who told Pierce Brosnan he could sing....but UGH!

Can't wait to see the Dark Knight....and I NEVER get to see movies in the theaters---usually see all on DVD. Maybe go 1 or 2 times a year to an actual theater, but I LOVE Christian Bale and think he is one of those actors who is so underrated. That plus the fact that I have heard high praise for Heath Ledger's portrayal as the Joker. WIll probably wait a few days though---don't like to have to get to the theater an hour before it starts just to ensure that I am not sitting in the front row. Please, anyone who does see it please post!

P.S. Although I love Meryl Streep also (Sophie's Choice probably in the top 2 of my all time favorite movies) I have absolutely ZERO desire to see Mama Mia

I want to see Mama Mia, but I am going to wait.

I have jury duty on Monday, and dh is going to see it after he drops me off.

Just came home from the theatre! We saw The Dark Knight and all I can say is "WOW"! It was really good! Loved Heath's performance. Christian Bale is a very good Batman!

Almost brought DD, but changed our minds to have a date night. Very glad she didn't go. Lots of violence that people were laughing at.

But I loved it anyway!

My son saw Dark knight last night and told me it was great. As far as Mamma Mia goes, I refuse to see it. It has been so overly promoted around here, the commercials for it just irk me anymore. I literally change the channel or leave the room now when the commercial comes on.

Dark Knight was excellent. This is the first Batman movie that I actually liked. Heath Ledger was unrecognizable and not just becuase he was in makeup. I thought Jack Nicolson was a great joker and Ledger's performance blew Nicolson's out of the water.

Thumbs up

We just got back from watching Batman and thought it was excellent...great performance from Bale, and Ledger was the best Joker yet. I foresee some posthumous award nominations for him. I'm not a big Batman fan normally but wow this was a good movie

My DH dragged me to this. I was not happy about it at the time but I must say I did really enjoy it. The level of violence was extreme but it worked. I would never reccomend it for a anyone but an adult but I must say I was impressed. Great acting and amazing effects. I didn't like the girl that played Rachel nearly as much as katie Holmes (sp) but I had issues with her performance too.

I loved this movie! I would not recommend it for young children. I thought Heath Ledger was tremendous and I thought Jack N. played it the best but no longer. I believe he deserves an Oscar, he was as good as the critics said.

We all went to see it today (DH, DS, and myself).

DS is 11 1/2 and I think he was a bit too young for all of the violence/gore. He went to see Transformers when it was out, but this was a bit too much for him.

Heath was awesome!

However, DH and I gave it a 6/10. (10 being the best).

I think it is just overdone with the media due to Heath's early death.

It was a good movie, but I don't think it was as awesome as the media is trying to say it is.

We took our kids and we all thought it was amazing! The kids loved it and the violence wasn't over the top for them.

I was also wondering if all the 'hype' about the movie was due to Heath Ledger's death, all the praise for him, etc., because of his early passing (I don't mean any disrespect for him, I hope that didn't come out wrong). I'm glad to hear that the movie is really great and his performance is wonderful too. Now I want to see it and I haven't seen any Batman movies, lol. I did hear Maggie Gyllenhaul (sp?) say in an interview that her performance is not at all up to par with Katie Holmes' in the previous Batman (she totally said Katie rocks and she doesn't lol). For what it's worth.

I didnt watch the batman movie with Katie in it. THe last batman movie I was saw was with Jack N in it. I thought that one was great. i thought health did a great job. Anyways I went to see this movie with my two kids. It was good but I thought it was loong. also I didnt think Maggie G acted very well, she didnt really get into the character or something. and yes, the violence was extreme but it didnt faze my kids any.

We saw it with our 9 and 7 yr olds. There was a bit of violence but all Batman movies have a lot of it. The kids really enjoyed it, as did DH and I. Heath Ledger did a GREAT job (and I would still say that even if he were still alive). Batman's voice was funky though. All in all it was a great movie.

I saw it also and Heath is amazing! I have always liked him as an actor, but this performance was BY FAR his best! The only thing is the movie is pretty long and I got very uncomfortable the last 1/2 hour. Very much worth seeing in the theater!

OK, guys, which is it

This poster says there is a "bit of violence" and others are saying there is extreme violence. While I realize that everyone has their own perception, surely there can't be that big of a range between "a bit" and "extreme"

My 12-year old niece wants to see it, but I would never take her to a movie with "extreme" violence in it. Heck, I'm not interested myself in seeing a movie with extreme violence.

If it was extreme, it would have been rated R. The movie is PG-13. Everyone has their own opinion about the level of violence, so I think it is pretty hard to classify it. There was one point when I looked away, but it didn't end up showing what I thought it would. I guess I would have to say moderate, but continuous in parts.

DH and I went to see it last night and all I can say is WOW! Heath was so great as the joker. There was times during his performance when you could not tell it was him. By far a wonderful performance.

I've done a bit of studying on the movie rating system and I think one of the big things that makes the difference when rating based on violence is the amount of blood/gore that is shown. There can be a lot of violence-gun use, explosions, fighting, etc-but if there isn't a lot of blood/gore then it would get a PG-13 rating as opposed to an R.

Basically, violence gets to skate in the ratings system. Blow up half the planet and everyone in it but as long as you don't show too much blood, it's OK. But language and nudity are the kiss of death. Use the f-word twice and you get an R, no matter what else is in the film. And don't even try to show female frontal nudity-that is just about the worst thing in the world according to the movie raters. There's a very interesting documentary called "This Film Has Not Yet Been Rated" that explains alot about ratings and why some movies were given the ratings they were.

I would say that it's up to parents to decide what is best for their kids. When in doubt, don't. If you think the movie may be inappropriate, wait for the dvd. It's a lot easier and cheaper to turn off a dvd than to leave a crowded theater.

There's a website: SCREEN IT! ENTERTAINMENT REVIEWS FOR PARENTS that can help parents decide on movies. It gives detailed breakdowns on exactly how much/what type of violence, amount of swearing and words/phrases used, etc. It does give away plot details so be warned.

Sorry so long, but kids at movies they don't belong at and the movie ratings system in general are pet peeves of mine.
