Can Walmart cashiers see the answer to the CC scanner question?

You know when you're checking out at Walmart and the credit card scanner asks you either if the store was clean or if your cashier was friendly? Well, when I was checking out this week, the cashier did not greet me in any way, just started scanning my stuff (which is a BIG pet peeve of mine). So I answered no on "was she friendly?" As soon as I did, I heard a distinct beep come from the screen they look at. Maybe something else caused it but I'm wondering if anyone knows if they see the answer you put in.

Wow, what if she was having a bad day or something because her dog died. And she now gets fired because she didn't say "Hi,How are you today" to one of her customers. That seems kind of lame to me.

They dont know. ANd I agree at Dollydeal. not everyone can be on 100% on all of the time, unless maybe you work at Disney and they pay you for it. Cashiering is probably one of the worst jobs at WM, and the employees get no respect, are ignored by customers chatting on cell phones (a huge peeve of mine) and are spoken down to if they are Hispanic. This is just what I see working as an outside contractor in WM's. Most of these people are just trying to earn a living.
I try to greet the cashiers myself with a smile. They smile back, and sometimes I am greeted in TWO languages

I don't know if they can see the answer, but most of the cashiers that I have had there act like they're doing me a favor. You were just answering what the screen asked and if that's the way I was greeted I would have just answered it truthfully also. I have worked as a cashier for many years in a grocery store so I do know how hard it is to be friendly to EVERY customer but it's not the customers fault if I'm having a bad day or don't like my job.

The question asks, "Was the cashier friendly?" It doesn't ask, "Was the cashier friendly or do you think she was maybe having a bad day? Or maybe she feels that she isn't getting enough respect?" If you go to the hospital to have surgery and the doctor amputates the right arm when it was supposed to be the left, do you say, "Poor guy, maybe he was having a bad day. Maybe he didn't sleep well and his brain was a little foggy"? If you go to the register at Walmart and the cashier doesn't even say hello or acknowledge you standing there, and the question is asked "Was the cashier friendly?" obviously the answer is No. What's wrong with being honest about it?

I am always honest. Most of the time I get "did the cashier greet you today", or "was the store clean today".

I never answer the prompt, then again if I shop at Wal-Mart 5 times a year that is a lot. IMO it is a survey and I don't do surveys unless I am paid. If I get poor service from a cashier (no matter what store) I will go to thhe CS desk and bring it to the managers attention. On the flip side, if I get exceptional service I will also go to the CS desk and bring it to the managers attnetion.

It seems unlikely but one can always hope. If an employee is having such a bad day that they can't handle the basics of minimal courtesy, they shouldn't have come in to work. They should call their boss and say "Hey, I'm in such bad shape that I can't even manage to say hello to our customers".

You should be 'on' 100% of the time you're on the job. It sounds to me like Walmart is trying to improve customer service and they need to. It's not that all people who work at Disney are happy every minute of the day or that they're making a huge salary. The reason that Disney has superior customer service is that they INSIST on it and don't make excuses for subpar employees. If you can't/won't follow their rules, you're out. If more companies followed their lead, shopping would be a more pleasant experience for everyone. The cashiers at Walmart are being paid too and if they don't like the salary or working conditions, they're free to seek employment elsewhere. If you're being paid to do a job, do it right or quit. Since when did the size of your paycheck determine how well you do your job? Just how much do you think a person should make before they are willing to do the job they're already being paid to do and greet their customers?

I hardly ever shop at Walmart, and didn't even know they had surveys. However, I would answer honestly if I thought the cashier wasn't friendly or the store was dirty. I've done some mystery shopping and am always honest and straight forward with my reports. A friend of mine thinks that I should be more understanding of the employees and always give them excellent remarks. She thinks that it's not fair if they get in trouble or lose their jobs because of negative feedback. I think it's admirable that stores are trying to improve.

Darn, I wish we had a clapping icon. I'm too lazy to go search for the one I have stored. Great answer Opal.

Lacking diplomacy (not that I'm a diplomat), but very poignant! And, I absolutely agree with you.

If your cashier had one "off" day then it won't matter. If he or she continually gets the not friendly response to the survey then appropriate action will need to be taken.

1) No, they can't see the answer to the question.
2) it takes more than one "no" to the friendly question to get a cashier fired.
3) trust me when I tell you this--being friendly and courteous are essential job functions listed in the job description for Wal-Mart cashier.

And if a person in incapable for whatever reason of performing the essential job functions, then they need to change jobs.

Cashiers are subject to periodic reviews. Management pulls the register tapes, reviews the responses the cashiers have received, looks at their absences, etc. Just like any other job---raises, terminations, etc. are based on an overall "score". You can have the friendlist cashier on earth, but if their drawer is short/over consistently, or they have an attendance problem---they can be terminated.

At our Wal-Marts, we don't have that on our screens. But if we did, I would answer it truthfully.

We don't have that at my WalMart. I wish we did. Some are so rude, but then some of them are great and friendly.

we have those questions at my walmart but I have never answered them. Since all we have is a walmart, krogers, and food city around here then I goto walmart alot. I wish we had a target! anyways, I have always wanted to answer the question about is the store clean with no everytime I go in but never answered any of the questions. also regarding cashiers since I have to go there so much I have already figured out which ones to avoid and which ones to go to. Even my kids have figured it out...lol. And now that we have self check out my life has gotten so much more happier.

Our store has that prompt and I usually ignore it. Even though, our store is usually VERY clean and the majority of cashiers are very friendly. So, if the cashiers get YES answers, do they get anything for those? If so, I'll start answering when the cashier is friendly and probably ignoring it when they aren't. But, that's just me. Though rude cashiers irritate me, I just tend to ignore it unless they're WAY off the chart rude. I kind of feel that ignoring it if they aren't friendly is punishment enough IF they do get some type of reward for YES answers.

My sister and I went the other day and used a checkout instead of the self checkout where I invariably have a problem. I went thru first and the cashier didn't say squat to me.....never even thanked me at the end of the transaction. I didn't see the question on my screen but when my sister went thru right behind me it popped up on her screen and since the casher didn't greet her either I got to answer no for her. Cashier didn't thank her either.

I should have asked for a manager right then and there and let him know. If we would act like that at Target we wouldn't be there very long.

I don't know, but I'd suppose it's possible it could affect their raises when they're evaluated. (i.e. - If they got a lot of "friendly" answers, they might get a bigger raise.)

That's what I was thinking too. I'll be more aware of answering YES when they are friendly.

This is a great Thread! Very rare do I have a cashier at Walmart that is friendly. I accept that. I am sure they are not paid well and not educated enough to get a better job. It doesn't bother me that they are not friendly, I say hello anyways. I am not there to make a friend, just get my stuff and get out of the store that I despise going to.

I guess I live by a pretty good Walmart. The majority of the time the cashier's I have are polite and friendly. They're not necessarily Disney World nice, but that would actually become annoying. LOL
I always answer the question on the screen...I never thought about whether they could see the answer or not. Most of the time I use the self-checkout, though. I like to pack my own bags. I seem to be able to get my stuff into a lot less bags than they do...this is at any store, though, so I guess they're packing them the way they're told.

I would only mark the "No, she was not friendly if she didn't take my coupons". Lately, my Walmart has been wonderful.Today I'm going there with 2 of my internet coupons that don't scan lol,so hopefully they are still kind and friendly like they have been.

I only wish every customer or client of every individual in every office, store, etc. was asked that question. It might help to improve custumer service at the doctor's office, the cable company, the phone company, the lawyer's office, the electric company, etc. Cashiers certainly aren't the only individuals who provide poor customer service.
