I hang up! lol my question is what is with all the "state" calls that hang up. IE: Indiana call ########## when I answer, they just hang up. That irks me.

I just say in a neutral tone " sorry I do not participate in this type of call" and I hang up, because if you don't they just come back at you non stop. My 13 yr old thinks this is rude of me, though I have tried to explain to him that I believe it is rude of the caller to interrupt my day and demand my attention and participation in their business venture. As for the political calls, same thing.

I use to work at a call center (research/survey) a few years ago, and unless the rules have changed... The "no call" list only applies to telemarketers (which are people who are trying to sell you something). It does not apply to people asking for donations, research/surveys or political support. And again, unless the rules have changed.... If you do not want them (any of them) to call you anymore, you MUST tell them to remove you from their calling list. (i.e. - "Please take me off your calling list." or "Please remove me from your calling list.") Simply hanging up does not indicate that you want to be removed from their list. However, it does allow them to assume that you somehow were accidentally disconnected, and therefore they will call you back. The call center I worked at had very strict rules as to what we were and were not allowed to say to the respondent. (Respondent being whomever the autodialer called.) We were randomly monitored daily to make sure we were saying what was expected of us. Where I worked, you were required to yield and maintain a certain % of accepting respondents (accept rate). If the respondent simply hung up the phone without saying a word, or even if they said, "Sorry, I do not participate in this type of call.", that would have counted against our accept rate. And, the respondent's phone # would've went back to the autodialer to be called again at a later time or date. If the respondent said, "Please take me off your list!" and then IMMEDIATELY hung up.... that did not count against our accept rate. (This is the way I preferred people to hang up on me. )Please do not confuse telemarketers and research interviewers. Research interviewers are not after your money (they do not ask for SS#, bank account or CC info, etc.), and quite often the respondent makes a little cash for participating. I understand that a lot of people feel it's an invasion of privacy to get an unsolicited call at home, or anywhere for that matter. Unfortunately, that's a requirement of the job. The call center is one of the higher paying jobs around here. And, if you're lucky enough to get full-time, I've heard they have great benefits. Some of those folks working there (teens, seniors & everyone in between) are actually nice people that are just trying to make a living, just like the rest of us. And, you wouldn't believe some of the things they have to put up with to do so. Imagine having people yelling, cursing, insulting and hanging up on you all day. It's not an easy job, and it's certainly no job for someone with thin skin. I did well and had a high accept rate when I worked there, but truely, I cannot say that I miss it. .

I'm glad you posted this because we have been getting an unusual number of these types of calls lately. Everything from the Kidney Foundation, Clothes Collections, TV Ratings, Painting Companies...the list goes on. I know we were on the do not call list, but thanks Ms. Miser for explaining why we still get some of the calls that we do. I usually just pick up and hang up without saying a word when I see it says "Unknown Caller". It really is a pain in the butt. ~Lisa

Unfortunately, a lot of the ones lately have been pre-recorded. I do not have caller ID. |

I am so glad I gave up my land line and have a cell phone, those calls use to get on my nerves! I hate the pre recorded ones the most. I answer the phones at work and have learned the numbers and hang up before I waste my time answering the phone. steph

![]() Glad I could enlighten you, Lisa. Cuthie, those are pretty much the only unsolicited calls I get anymore. They're extremely annoying because there's no one to tell "Remove me from your list." Occasionally there'd be a # option at the end of the recording to speak to a rep, or to be removed from their list. But, I got tired of listening to the recordings and a lot of them don't even give an option. I keep meaning to call my attorney general to find out what I can do about those types of calls. (Talking about recorded messages reminds me of a post I need to make.) .

If it is a person asking for the Mr. of Mrs. of the household, I tell them "sure, just a moment please" and lay the phone down and go about my business. A few minutes later, I'll hear the beep beep beep of the disconnected line. Is that Polite??? Probably not, but, I think they expect stuff like that with their job. Last night I got phone call from a funeral home wanting to come bring me a living will and discount on a plot. I asked the woman, "do you know something I don't know?????" That one was very odd.

I don't answer them! I have caller ID and I only answer if I know who it is. DH always calls on his cell phone to mine so I can see it's him (the place is works is "unknown" on caller ID). I will only sometimes answer local numbers because it might be someone calling for my kids to play or something and usually, I'm right. If it's an organization, I say "take me off your list and do not call again" and hang up and then register that # as "spam" on m ID

![]() I just wanted to add..... When I work at the call center, I spoke to people all over the U.S. and even Canada (Some of them are not very fond of Americans. LOL). I discovered that a great number of people don't even listen to find out who's calling them. They just hear an unfamiliar voice, assume it's a telemarketer and hang up. At the call center where I worked, if the respondent was not receptive on the first contact, we (generally speaking) were still required to contact them a 2nd time. The reason being, possibly another household member would be willing to participate, or maybe they were skeptical the first time because they weren't familiar with our company and had time to investigate and reconsider the offer, or maybe there was something more urgent going on with them that day, or maybe we were accidentally disconnected before we could introduce ourselves, etc. I remember speaking to a "respondent" once who told me, "Oh, I'm so glad you called me back! They called the other day, but it didn't "click" who was calling until after I'd hung up. When I answered the phone, I heard an unfamiliar voice and assumed it was a telemarketer, so I hung up." It turned out that she was thrilled to be able to participate, but she'd almost missed the opportunity because she didn't stop to listen and find out who was calling her. That's something that's always boggled my mind. I ALWAYS listen (or ask) to find out who's calling me and why, and then I decide if I want to talk to them or not. If for no other reason than to be sure I'm not hanging up on Ed McMahon when he calls to tell me I've finally won the Publisher's Clearing House. (LOL) But, seriously.... How do you know what opportunities you're passing up if you don't listen first? .

OK..I will admit that *If* I answer the phone, I usually wait to hear who it is. Doesn't do much good since i have never gotten a phone call with something I wanted to participate in. Easiest thing is just not answer,. If it's important, they can leave a voicemail

ringer is turned off, only comes on if we're expecting a call from the dr's office or something. The kids school and everyone important have our cell numbers. Oldest borrowed his friends cell phone to call us alot before we got him his own <pay as you go no way would he get a normal cell> and hers was a pay as you go also so i bought her a time card for her phone cause she'd let him call us if needed. Her mom was suprised and said she'd probably never see someone do that again that's why she usually tells her daughter not to let anyone use it at all
