Talking Toot Toot

I'm a little giddy, so I'm going to toot my own horn. Awhile back I had interviewed with a reporter from SELF magazine when I was going through my MAJOR complications from my Gastric Bypass. WELL, the article is out this month AUGUST 2008. It was weird seeing it there. PAGE 146 LOL.

It's a very informative article, and I was happy it was done so tastefully.

FYI

I hope things are going well for you after all the complications.

I gather that your experience with the gastric bypass surgery wasn't totally positive?

OMG yes that's me. Thanks for seeing that. And no, my experience was not positive. Alot of stuff happened to me, as a result of surgery.

Yeah, it was kinda surreal to see it in the magazine...wowee.

Great Story, How are you doing now? Do you still have beriberi?

I do not have beri beri, but even since getting the surgery reversed, I am left with alot of nerve damage, and neuropathy in my leg. The nerve damage is in my hands, and my neck, weird spots. I don't think I'll ever be 100% again. I have difficulty concentrating, and get extremely fatigued still.

Hello, Sorry to hear about your surgery complications. I too had an open gastric bypass on 11/06. Thankfully no problems for me. Hope you are doing better !! Were almost neighbors... I live in Lake Mary FL.

The article was excellant. You gave some good insight regarding possible complications following the surgery. The article was well written, and allowed me to more fully understand some of the complications that may follow these surgeries. I know of 3 people who had the surgery and can better understand now what they are or could be experiencing in every day life. With the dumping syndrome, I though they just experienced nausea & gas. I didn't realize they experienced lightheadedness too. What discomfort this must feel like. What kind of post surgical complications or side effects have you experienced with the reversal of the bariatric surgery?

I am so sorry to read about what miserable conditions you have endured following your original surgery and am glad that you shared your experiences with the world.

I'm sorry you had to go through all that, but I'm glad it wasn't worse. Those statistics in the article would've been too scary for me to seriously consider the surgery, I guess I'm just a coward when it comes to "the knife". And I must say, I'm disappointed to see Johnson & Johnson's unethical role in gastric bypass.

Eileen, am I to understand that beri beri caused your nerve damage/neuropathy?

I experienced dumping from sugar three times, and I thought I was going to die. Intense fatigue, heart racing, sweating, dizzy, terrible....I was extremely sensitive to sugar so would keep it to under 5grams per serving.

As far as complications after, I still do not tolerate sugar. I also had developed episodes of hypoglycemia while waiting for my reversal, and I still have that. But so far, that's it.

Yes, the beri beri caused the nerve damage/neuropathy, and because the beri beri went undiagnosed for so long, the doctor was sceptical that it would reverse itself, and it hasn't.

My Dad had weight loss surgery and he is struggling too. It's been a life long battle that is so hard. People don't always understand the desperate measures you will take when you are so miserable literally risking your life. It's hard when you want to go to a baseball game and can't fit in the seat or when you fly and you are squished.
Hope you are doing well! You look great and I look forward to reading the article.
