Enough with unusual names

Judge: Girl's name, Talula Does The Hula, won't do - Yahoo! News

I get tired of parents who name their kids freaky names, I cant even remember or spell half of them.
Bout time someone did something about it.......Wish the good Ole USA would jump on the band wagon

I heard about this on the radio this morning. The host could hardly get the story out she was laughing so hard.

I kind of gave my DD an unusual spelling, but it's how my Mom spells her name, and well, her Mom was heavily drugged when filling out the birth certicate form. So, I guess I can blamed my drugged up grandmother, but oh well, it's just one extra letter.

Can't remember who, some soap actor named his newborn son "Peanut Kai". Can you imagine the nickname other kids will call that MALE child?

So when does a name become freaky? What are the rules you would propose for nonfreaky naming?

Why do you or anybody else care what people name their kids? It is none of our business. Just my opinion.

I personally dont like weird names...but I respect others choices to name their children whatever they wish.
I also think in the back of my mind (I have an unusual maiden name you had to spell any time anyone looked at it) would it be a PITA to the kid later...for instance, my neighbor named her daughter AArika...no one would know this kids name was Erica...when she was in the hospital, everyone called her "A-REEEKA"

Both of my daughters have VERY traditional names, but both can be nicknamed in many different ways. I always felt that naming a child was a huge responsibility; one not to be taken lightly -- I knew several people in school who had very unusual names and they paid dearly for them. It almost seems as if parents don't believe this child will ever get beyond the baby phase -- and that naming a child is merely another form of self-expression for the parent. Before we finally chose a name for our child it had to pass three tests:
A. It had to have deep meaning for us (both girls are named for strong, and beloved, female relatives...but we were also considering other names with deep meaning as well.)
B. Some form of the name had to fit in the following sentence: "Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the President of the United States, ___________________________"
C. And some form of the name also had to fit into this sentence as well "Look! It's Wonder Woman!, No! It's Super Girl! No, it's_____________________________"

We figure following the above mentioned rules would garner us a name our children could grow with, and live with!

My mom always said the way to pick a kids name was to shout it a couple of times.
First, middle and last name shouted in a tone of displeasure(Hannah Marie Lastname, get back in that house right now!) since she said that was probably the way you were going to use their full name most of the time lol!!

The name in my example is my cats first and middle name, and yes, it did pass the yell test.

That's exactly my thoughts!! I imagined myself going to the back door and calling my kids in from playing.
Children given an unusual name will never be able to buy personalized items because their name is never there. I didn't name my daughter an unusual name but there are different acceptable ways of spelling it. Whenever I find a personalized item with her name spelled the way we spell it I always buy it.
I agree with the judge on the names. I can't even begin to imagine being named Talula Does the Hula. That's just cruel.

Parents really need to think about what they name their children. Having an unusual name is not a good thing, people have been denied jobs and other opportunities just because of their names. It has become another form of prejudges.

But it was even worse - it was "Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii".

You'd think these people were naming their pets or something. Call your DOG something weird, but don't stick a name like that on your child for crying out loud.

Personally, I think the name Talula is awful enough to bare on a child, let alone Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii! My DS went to high school with a boy named Superman, and I thought that was a stupid name. And, when I worked at a call center, we would sometimes call up people who had names that you'd just assume they were a porno star. (Peter Ramwell is the only one I can remember off-hand.)

I like some "unusual" names because they're not boring and stand out from the crowd...but this particular one is just way too out there in my opinion. I'm wondering what the parents were thinking? But it is their child and their choice to name her whatever they wanted to. I can definitely see why the child would want her name changed, but I don't like the government getting involved. The girl has probably been teased and made fun of alot in school which is pretty sad. I was one of nine Lisa's in my graduating class. Although I like my name, I never knew if someone was talking to me or not with all those other Lisa's around. At the end of the day, it's the parents' opinion that matters so we shouldn't criticize their choice. If you don't like your name, you can change it when you're 18. Why be stuck with a name that you hate for the rest of your life? ~Lisa

Nicholas Cage named his son Kal-El, which is superman's birth name...
Jason Lee named his son Pilot Inspektor.

In choosing the name for my daughter, my husband and I wanted something that stood out as something different, but not so different that she would be mocked for her name.

Talula does the hula in Hawaii is just a terrible name all the way around. And you know that the girl isn't going to use the whole name. She'll just go by Talula, which is bad enough in my opinion...

How about Rugala, Deazhonnay (pronounced almost like the mustard), Rhondadelashan, Lexus, Levvita, Shakalesha, Antwayne or Antwannye (pronounced Antoine), and Hugii (pronounced like the diaper, yes). Good grief. Yes people have the right to name their kids what they want but wow those poor kids stuck with the names from hell, I feel bad for them

I even knew a couple of people who added accent marks to their kids' names, including a lady who named her baby Brittanniiee and put an accent between the two i's and the two e's. I don't get it, but yeah she can name her whatever she wants...

I agree that a parent can name a child whatever they want, but it is absolutely cruel to name a child these RIDICULOUS names Those parents are morons who must have smoked way too much crack to do that.

You know darn well that there is not a parent anywhere (except these idiots) that could believe it is fair (never mind loving!) to do that to a child.

All parents want their kids to have a great name that reflects positively on their child -- not a name that will cause the child to be ridiculed EVERY SINGLE DAY OF his/her entire life

Geez.

i find it interesting that a lot of people are reminding us that names can be changed. Of course they can, but there are expenses that go with a name change. Not to mention a lot of hassle; and, what about the previous 18 years of name calling and mocking and pure embarrassment that these people have endured? I don't think that the courts should have gotten involved, but for crying out loud, who's a voice for these kids? If a person absolutely loves a name like "Talula Does The Hula from Hawaii" maybe the parents involved should consider changing THEIR name to that moniker. Then they can enjoy all the perks of such an unusual name...

What exactly constitutes a NORMAL name? One that is European in origin? African? Indian? Chinese? Who gets to decide that only Sarah and Michael are normal? What is wrong w/ the name Tyree? My son's name is extremely close to that, and frankly, I love his name. I would never change it. What's wrong w/ Valanda? How is it any worse than Molly?

I personally don't want my government telling me what I can or cannot name my children. I teach in a school with a very diverse population. I've seen all kinds of names that would not seem "normal."
To each their own.

When I was pregnant, part of me would have loved to have been given a list of names to choose from, because there were so many options it got confusing. I know they either did or do do that in some European countries.

My Mom was born in 1931. The name on her birth certificate is Sara Ophelia ______ her family and everyone who who knew her called her unusal names. They totally dropped the Sara and used her middle name, which in itself isn't so bad, but they would call her all kinds of things from the name Ophelia. Here is all I remember...

Ofear
Fear
Philly
Phil

HAHAHA Fear... my mom was tough.. maybe it fit..kinda Anyway.. she sooooooooo disliked begin called by her middle name and eve more so these nicknames off her middle name!

There is a girl named Sinderella in dd's class. While it is unusual and not a name I would choose for my child, I don't think I would want it to be illegal to name her that.

I have a weird name, especially when you consider I got it in 1970 before all of the weird name thing was "in". Now it's not all that uncommon, I have met one other person with the same name in the last 15 years. And you know I sort of like it now, I don't particularly like the name, but it has it's advantages by being different.

When I call somewhere and say this is ________ they know exactly who it is. People remember it, they know me and it makes things easier. 20 years after high school they still remember me.
