flipper113, how is the homemade laundry detergent working???

I'm wanting to try it myself, but I'd like to know how well it actually works first. So, how's it been working for you? Can you give some feedback, please?

I called a couple of stores to try to find the Fels Naptha soap. So far the only place I found was True Value, but they said they had liquid Naptha. But I doubt it's the same thing because the guy said it's harmful. I asked him, "How so?" He said it can hurt your skin if you have it on too long. So, I was wondering if the bar soap may possbily be the same way.

Sorry I am so slow, I haven't been on in a while!

The soap is great, I just opened my last jug of what I made that day. The clothes are clean and I can't really tell any difference other than they don't really smell perfumy. They probably would smell if used liquid softner, but I haven't thought to buy any.

It really is a great way to save money if you aren't getting it for free already!

And I did read somewhere that you can use any bar soap, I think Ivory was also recommended if you couldn't find the Fels.

I don't know if you have a Kroger near you, but I found it there.

At one grocery store here, the Fells Naptha is in the laundry section but in the other it's in with the facial soap. I use Ivory in my detergent because I wasn't crazy about the scent of the Fells Naptha, but boy is it great on stains. I always keep a bar in the house.

Thanks for the update!

I do have a Kroger, but I haven't thought to look there. I'll check them out tomorrow. Thanks again!

Here's the link to the first thread where I had the recipe posted. If you google it, there are a bunch of different recipes to try. There's also a powder mix which looked easier since you don't have to boil it, but i haven't tried that yet.

Has anyone ever made their own laundry detergent?

I did make it after reading about it here, but I think I may have done something wrong. It all gelled and it doesn't suds at all when I use it. I did cook it for a pretty long time because it said to heat until thickened and it never seemed to really thicken. Maybe that is what I did wrong. OP, does yours suds up like store-bought detergent?

jovia....it does gel...then actually looks lumpy when you scoop it out. Also, it has very little or no sudsing. Most of us judge cleaning power by suds, so it's hard to get used to little or no suds. Homemade detergent is great for front loaders because it doesn't suds much. HTH.

Exactly, there aren't supposed to be any suds. I put mine in my old detergent bottles and then give it a really good shake to liquify it before trying to pour it. Don't fill the bottles too full and take out the pouring spout, it's easier that way. ANd it doesn't thinken until it sits for a while, I thought the same thing, it should have thinkened on the stove but it doesn't.

Glad to hear someone else tried it!

I'm so glad to hear I did it right! OMG I was using like 3 or 4 times the amount I needed thinking that it wasn't working (Due to no suds!)

Bonus:
I had my kids help make it and it was such a fun afternoon project! Actually got them away from video games!!!!
DD loved grateing the soap. She wanted to do the whole bar and we just divided it into three, saving 2/3 of it for future use.

SO GLAD to know I didn't screw it up!!!
