Question Have You Tried, Or Heard About These Things With Your Cell Phone?

My brother sent me this email about ways you can supposedly use your cell phone as a tool, or incase of an emergency. Have you heard about, or tried them?

EMERGENCY OUTSIDE OF COVERAGE NETWORK AREA - The emergency number worldwide for mobile is 112. If you find yourself outside of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112. The mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you. The number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

LOCKED OUT OF YOUR CAR - If you have remote keyless entry and you've locked your keys in the car, and your spare remote is at home..... You can call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone.... Holding your cell phone about a foot from your car door, have the person at your home hold the spare remote close to their cell phone and press the "unlock" button (on the spare remote). Your car will unlock. It'll save them the trip to bring you your keys and distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away and it will still work.

HIDDEN BATTERY POWER - In an emergency situation, if your cell phone battery is very low, press 3370# on your key pad. Your cell phone will restart using the hidden battery reserve and will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will be recharged the next time you charge your cell phone.

DISABLE A STOLEN CELL PHONE - To find your mobile phone's serial number, press #06# on your cell phone's key pad. A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset, write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Then, if your phone is stolen, you can call your service provider and give them this code. With it, they will be able to block your handset, rendering it useless, even if the thief changes the SIM card.

FREE DIRECTORY SERVICE FOR MOBILE PHONES - Cell phone companies charge up to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial 800-FREE411 (or 800-373-3411) instead. There will be no charge incurred, so program this number into your cell phone now.

There are so many emails that float around the internet and many are hoaxes or just contain some false information. What I do now is check everything out on Snopes.com.Urban Legends Reference Pages
They are the leading authority on internet hoaxes.

I did a search and while I did not find an exact match, I did find that at least the first part of the email is a hoax---snopes.com: Cellphone 112 Emergency

I stopped looking, but perhaps some of the other items are listed there as well.

I use GOOG 411 for my info. Gives you the number of any business in any city in the US for free. And will send you a text message w/ the phone number and adddress for free too (of course your cell carrier may charge for text msgs).

1-800-GOOG-411: Find and connect with local businesses for free from your phone.

Quote:
You don't need a computer, an Internet connection, or even the keypad on your phone or mobile device. GOOG-411 is voice-activated, so you can access it from any phone (mobile or land line), in any location, at any time. For free.
Dial (1-800) GOOG-411. Say where. Say what you're looking for. GOOG-411 will connect you with the business you choose.

If you are calling from a mobile device, GOOG-411 can even send you a text message with more details and a map. Simply say "Text message" or "Map it."

rose13, I went to Snopes and did a search myself. I found this. ~~~>LINK<~~~ It's basically the same email and apparently it's not entirely a hoax, there's some truth to it. Thanks for the Snopes info, it helped clear it up!

Thanks for the GOOG 411 info jaded.

I use the last one for free directory assistance. I have heard that the opening of car door w/ cell phone does work.

I called my service provider and asked them about some of these. They said if you hit *#06# (not #06#) it will show your cell phone's serial # (I tried it and it worked), however they already have that number on file. And, the only way they could disable the phone is if the thief called them and tried to register the stolen phone using that serial # (which they never do)

I just don't see how the car key remote thing could work, but I might test it out just to see.

mY SISTER said this one worked for her but I have had a friend try it and it did not work for her.

You can text ANY question you want answered to ChaCha (242242) and it will be answered via text by a live person. Directions, phone numbers, silly questions, etc. It's a free service. The only charge will be whatever your mobile company charges for txt messages.
