Hysterectomy?

I'm having one on next Thursday. Uterus is very enlarged with fibroids and the cervix is bleeding abnormally. Doc is doing the 'smile' incision, I used to turn to this board for advice all the time years ago and I need to get advice again.

I know about no stair climbing, no heavy work around the house, no working in the office, no driving. I'm out for a minimum of 4 weeks. But what's your personal experience with it? What tricks did you use to get through it? I'm going to have a friend get my groceries since my son is only 12 and doesn't drive yet... Advice needed and welcomed. Thanks

I have no experience, myself. But I remember when a relative had one. She did a lot of the things many of us did when planning for our first babies - freezing dinners - lots of casseroles, lasagna, etc. The longer you can go without ordering pizza delivery, the better...

Prayers to you!!

I recently had a hysterectomy - vaginal. It was an overnight procedure and I was feeling "normal" after one week. I was not able to exercise but I could walk up and down the street.

I could drive as soon as I was off prescription medication. I was off of it after week one and had to go back on it after week two because I was doing too much.

I am going to PM you with a great website I used to answer all my questions! Good luck!

I had one as well. They took the uterus but left my ovaries. Mine was also done vaginally. They told me they were going to cut but when I woke up I found out they didn't.

The biggest thing I remember was it took me awhile to be able to walk or stand upright. I was hunched over for a bit. I was told not to drive for 3 weeks but I was driving 3 days afterwards. Biggest thing is not to over do it like another poster said. I knew everytime I did too much as I would bleed and hunch over even more.

Thanks for the replies. Found out today that the surgery will be postponed since I have invasive cervical cancer. Meeting with oncologist next week to see if they do radiation first or take me in for the radical hysterectomy at a cancer hospital.

I'm living proof that skipping a pap smear isn't worth it. I'm hoping everything was caught in time.

I'm off to read the PMs now. Thanks again

I'm sorry you have cervical cancer I had robotic radical hyterectomy for uterine cancer last year and I recommend you eat very light foods for a few days after surgery. Also, drink smooth move herbal tea and keep Phillips Milk of Magnesia handy incase you need help with easier bowel movements.

I did this about 4 years ago. Best decision of my life. Listen to the Dr. You will feel like you are able to do more than you should. Take your time and let yourself heal. I found a great place for information was hystersisters.com. They answer all of your questions without making you feel like a dope.

One little tip I can recommend is to be sure to bring a pillow or two for when you go home. One to sit on and one to hold accross your abdomen. Got this recommendation from my mom when she had hers. I had my right ovary removed 2 1/2 years ago by laporoscopy, buy was still out 3 weeks from the pain. My ovary was difficult to remove and I think I had some internal bruising from it. Hope everything goes well.

I had a "complete" (including ovaries) hysterectomy almost two years ago at the age of 39. I highly recommend the hystersisters website!!! I'm so sorry about the cervical cancer. This site is very informative (communication with others) and I know that there are women in situations similar to yours that you can "chat" with from the hystersisters site.

You're in my thoughts,
Holly

I had a partial 5.5 years ago at 39. Best thing I ever did!!!!!!My uterus was full of fibroids and I had a pedunculated one( on outside of uterus) the size of a softball. Had to go the bikini cut route.

Do listen to your doctor. You will feel like you can do more...but you get into the middle of it and get worn out. Definitely have the pillows. Don't let anyone tell a joke or make you laugh. Make sure that the car you ride home from the hospital in is the most comfortable riding car you can use. A big SUV will be a little rough...LOL!You might itch for a while, but it goes away. I had small twinges at the incision site for about a year, and then they stopped.

I do still have my ovaries..and now I am starting with the hot flashes.
