How upset are you about smaller package sizes?

I was going to ask, "are you" upset, but I think I might know the answer to that. So, my question is, How upset are you?

I just found out that Tuna is now getting smaller. All cans are losing an oz each and the pouches are going down in size as well.

I am upset because this is going to mess with my recipes.

With everything getting smaller, which one package change has got you "burnt"?

I'm just irritated at the whole thing - the packages get smaller and the prices go up - but what are you going to do? They're not going to change it.

It wasn't so long ago that companies existed to produce a product they were proud of, to create jobs and give great service.

Now it's all about the almighty bottom line and making the CEO wealthy...and anything they can do along the line to cut costs are fair game, whether it's sucky service, shipping it overseas, smaller packages, laying people off or what.

I hear they are getting smaller also but they charge less when it's smaller unlike Kraft, etc who charges more for less stuffing.

It just annoys and angers me not only that this is happening but unlike other situations we can't really do anything. If you have to eat you have to eat and there are too many in the store to say "I'm not buying this brand anymore" but if a person can that's the best thing to do. Stop buying it and contact the company to say no more buying until you stop it.

I didn't realize that Dreyers Ice Cream (Eddies, for those of you in the East) is now in even smaller packages. DS wanted coffee ice cream and I could only find it in Dreyers. I always buy the store brand since it always on sale and my family can't tell the difference between store brand taste and "gourmet." Since the Dreyers was on sale I bought one package and informed DS that I'd keep a look-out for the store brand coffee ice cream but until then, that would be the last of the coffee ice cream for awhile!

doesn't bother me too much. The biggest thing I notice it in is cereal but then again I don't buy a lot of boxed and/or canned products. The rice I use has stayed the same and the canned stuff is pretty much the same size...just costs more. It's been happening for years so I can't be too angry because it's nothing new. It sucks but it's not going away

I don't like when they do it. I remember when my kids were in diapers (years ago) they would reduce the number of diapers in the package but keep the price the same. I would rather they just charge more and not try to pull a fast one on me. Sometimes I think they just think we are stupid and will not notice. lol The also did the same thing with baby food by reducing the amount in the jars. The said it was because they found that babies didn't need that much food. They did keep the price the same though.

Me too (BTW, I like the new avatar).

I think it sucks that they are still charging so much and we are getting less.

They've all got me burnt! I just noticed the same d@mn thing yesterday when I was buying tuna. Products keep shrinking while prices steadily increase. It's been going on for years, where's the line?

The 1/2 gallon box of ice cream has shrunk. Many dry pastas have went from 16 to 12-oz. And, I've noticed recently that Bush's Baked Beans has come out with new flavors which are only 22-oz, unlike their other flavors that are 28! They've taken away 6 whole ounces and I'm sure they feel it's justified because it's a new, different flavor. I seriously doubt it costs any more to produce the new flavors than it does to produce the old. And, IF it does, I'm sure the cost is minuscule. But, I've already braced myself to expect the regular flavors to be downsized as well. I believe they think they're being sneaky and we'll get use to the new 22-oz size in the new flavors, so we won't notice when the others shrink.

At this rate, I can't wait to see how they think they're going to justify selling a roll of TP with 10 sheets on it. What, it's got scrubbing bubble action and only takes 1 sheet? It's designer TP and perfumed to make your bum smell fresh? If you need perfumed TP to freshen you butt, then I'm sure it's long overdue for a washing! But, I have no doubt some fool would buy it. Give me a break! My TP is soft enough, thank you. I don't need or want it any softer, just quit shrinking it. Why should TP be extravagant? You wipe yourself with it and then flush it away! Pretty soon it'll be cheaper just to wipe yourself with a dollar bill. Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but it just doesn't seem to end. So really, what's next? I'm quite surprised they haven't taken any eggs out of my dozen yet.

I really find it annoying too. Half gallons are NOT 1.5quarts....lol
It does mess with recipes, because on many older recipes it will call for a can of XX ( for example). Only problem is, that can of XX is now 14oz instead of 16oz and now your recipe is dry/off/whatever. Really, are we supposed to buy 2 cans and toss the extra? Unless recipes state the oz/cups etc of every item included we are bound to think that the recipe just sucks...lol
Whenever I write down a new recipe I note the ounces/cups,etc just for this reason, since a "bag of chocolate chips" might be 4 oz instead of 12 oz sometime in the future!

Coming from a person working in a midsize retail co....

We feel your pain, honestly. I can tell you, lots of CEO's are NOT making a million. They ARE supporting lots of people and causes and have money issues JUST LIKE YOU.

Noone is thinking your stupid by changing the size of the packaging.

Maybe they didn't take out a full page ad, or hire a blimp to tell you, but all the info is there, on what your buying. Making packaging smaller is a way for them to keep your cost the same. Yes, your getting less for your buck, but WHERE ARE YOU NOT? Do you think that somehow, magically, business, who use products, just like you, raw material to make what they sell, are NOT feeling the impact of pricing??? Do you think, for some reason, THEIR gas, THEIR electricity, THEIR cost of living, THEIR raw materials are not going up in price??? That same .59 product last year IS costing them .72 this year to make. Be sure of that.... PLUS remember, they are paying sometimes hundreds of people... who, yes, need an increase in their pay to survive....

"BIG" business is not always the enemy.

We are all trying to survive these times.

Ok, done defending. Carry on.

Thanx

Mathematically, that's not true. When a 4oz item costs the same as a 6oz item, that doesn't keep costs the same at all. Nor is keeping packages the same size, and reducing the contents anything but deceptive. It's not unusual for a package to brag about including a larger quantity for free, but I've never seen one state that it now contains less -- and all that would take is a bit of ink, not a marketing campaign. I think a lot of us take exception to the rather weaselly nature of pretending a product's the same as it always has been, rather than the increase in price.

I know the jump in my company is to get the new tags on the shelf with the weights and measures, so consumers are educated.

I would hope that every company puts forth the effort to get their tags changed at store level, instead of just keeping the old one up because it is the same price.

The UPC's are changing on these products that are shrinking as well. Well, some of them are. Breyers didn't. They shrunk the packaging, and supposedly did not raise their prices.

Because of the recipe issue, I would personally prefer that the size remain the same and the price increase. Changing the packaging is not a cheap endeavour and additionally increases costs across the board. We all know that costs are rising, mostly due to transportation and its dependency on oil, so no need to play these packaging games....just raise the price.
