Question Are you a Phonie?

No I don't mean a poser or kook. Are you a phone person? A little bit or a lot? Are you ok if the phone doesn't ring for a week at a time or do you hyperventilate at the thought of being out of phone contact?

The reason I ask is that I was rebuked the other day by a coworker for screening my calls. It didn't go well for her but it got me to thinking.
I realize that I am almost militant in my belief that my phone is for my convenience not the callers. And don't seem to be getting better with age.

Is it because I am old enough to remember party lines, and one phone in a two story house? Am I not moving with the times? Or do I just not like the thought of someone demanding my attention at will?
And this part is really going to sound crazy but we have had a cell phone since the time of the Barbie brick phone. And I have always viewed them as an electronic leash.

How about you? Phonie or not?

When I was a teenager I was a phonie. Now, not so much, my phone could not ring for a month and I wouldn't bat a lash. I sometimes turn my phone off for days at a time. I got rid of my landline years ago and only have a cell now.

I hate talking on the phone, absolutely hate it! Of course when I was a teen it was glued to my ear. Our landline is turned off so that it doesn't ring. Now texting, i could text all day long.

I am not a phone person. Sometimes I answer sometimes I don't. I love caller id becuase I can screen my calls. Same with my cell phone. I have the cell phone for my convenience not for the convenience of others.

However, I am the acting registrar my my kids soccer club and the past 2 weeks I have been chained to both the home and cell phone. I can't wait until the rosters and passes are finalized and I can go back to "my" phone ways.

I am also this way with email. Just becuase someone emails me and I see / read it does not mean I am going to reply any time soon or at all. Those that know me know that is the way I am.

Definitely not a phonie! I screen my calls and really don't like talking on the phone. I don't understand the current popular trend of being on the cell phone constantly. I think it's strange -- nobody (ok, almost nobody) needs to be that connected.

I guess I am the weird one. I like to talk on the phone. My BFF and I talk for about an hour a day. If the phone doesn't ring for a few days I start to wonder if I paid my bill.

I used to be a phonie but then I got a job that required me to carry my cell phone 24/7 (they paid the bill and I could use it as much as I wanted) When I first started I would have page after page of personal calls that I would make and recieve. By the time I left that position there were hardly any personal calls listed at all. I screen calls all the time now and home phone doesn't ring goes right to the answering machine I decide who I talk to and when.

I hate the phone- to me, text messaging and email were great inventions!

DH got me unlimited text and my co-workers kow that they will get a response from me if they text me- not guarantee if they try to call me .

Nope, not a phonie or cell phone is for emergencies only (Tracfone) so I'm basically disconnected. I also don't text at all. I agree with your statements, cashchik. I feel pretty much the same!

I always say the women in my family were born with a phone growing out the shoulder lol yes I am a Phonie! If I would have known about cell phones in the 70s I would have studied quantum physics just so I could go to the future to carry a phone in my purse!
I love my phone I get the latest model with internet, still and video, planner, navigator, texting, etc etc etc.

I love my phone!

not a phonie here-unless I am talking to my BFF Kellyboysmom. I am so bad about keeping my cell phone charged, and usually leave it in the car when I go somewhere. As a teenager, I could be on the phone for hours, now, I have sh*t to do-state your point and hang up!

Not a phone person at all. Even if I really like the person who is calling, sometimes I just won't answer and I'll let the machine pick up. I have to be in the mood to talk on the phone. I do enjoy talking to my Mom once a day or every other day....and DH once a day when he's at work. For the most part, I only use my cell phone to call the kids, DH, or home. I don't just call people on there and chit chat. I can't stand people who walk around with the cell phone glued to their ear. Worse yet is when they walk around in the store with those headset things. I really don't care to hear their personal conversations...and I'm not trying to listen...it's just impossible to block most of them out when they are talking really loud. It's just very annoying. I have friends who just can't conceive that I don't use the cell phone to chat daily. Most of the time, I have it turned off. ~Lisa

P.S...However, when I drank, I used to be well known for my drunk dialing. If anyone's phone would ring late they would say, it must be Lisa. And yes, I'd get cursed out more than once and hung up on. Thank God I haven't done that in a long time!

You practically took the words right out of my mouth. (LOL)

I'm not a phonie, never have been. But, I'm only abrupt with family that calls when I'm busy. They know I'm a straight shooter, so they don't take offense. "Yeh, what do you want? I'm busy.... Okay, bye!"

I have a niece who would probably have a cell phone implant if she could. (See here - cell phone implant) Her cell phone is always blow'n up! I had to nip the text messaging in the bud with her, too.

And, I don't ever screen my calls, I always answer my phone. Mostly because I'm just curious to see who's calling me and why (LOL), but also because you never know when it's going to be an emergency. My mother was in a bad car wreck a few years back and the police called my home to tell me she was in the emergency room. DS was at home and got the call. He called me on my cell phone and I flew straight to the emergency room. Of my siblings, I live the closest to her, so that was one call I definitely wouldn't have wanted to missed.

Ditto Cuthie, cashchik, linny, caddylisa....not a phonie....or a phony either. And one step further, I get really irritated at those who are....for god's sake, if you're with friends, enjoy them, don't talk on the phone to other people! How rude!

I am a phonie I admit it but I am not rude about it. And many of the people I know love to talk on the phone. My sisters and Mom and I live over 600 miles apart. We love each other very much. I speak to all three on the phone almost everyday and we usually spend about 30 minutes to an hour on the phone with each one. I multitask talking on the phone with doing my housework etc.
If not for phones and the cheap talking I would never be able to talk to my friends and family far away.
I am happy being a phonie. I feel nothing bad about it and nothing to be ashamed of.

I almost feel sorry for some of you LOL. Take a moment and talk to someone and really listen to them. Maybe what you think is idle useless conversation is really people making a connection with each other.
If you are so busy you cannot take five minutes out of your day for a talk with someone maybe you are too busy! LOL

I must be a phonie too. LOL. I could stay on the phone for HOURSSSSS at a time. Although I am NOT one of those people who are waiting in line at the grocery store chatting on their phone. I think that's so rude!

I think it's rude too...but let me clarify something. I'm not one for people who are chit chatting out in public places. It is rude when you're not taking care of the business at hand like you said, perhaps checking out in line. If you want to talk when shopping and walk around with a phone attached to your ear, that's your perogative...even though it's annoying to other people and you look dumb as S#$% doing it. Go home and chat all you want in the privacy of your own home. I don't want to have to listen to your dumb a$$ blabbing away when I'm trying on clothes next to you in the Kohl's dressing room. At least wait (if you can) until you get to your car in the parking lot to chat. I know this is going to piss many people off who like to talk on the cell phone, but...I just think it's very rude to be blabbing away in public. I used to be a cashier in Publix and I couldn't stand when it was time for the customer to pay and they would say "Hold on" and be talking on their cell. If it seemed to be their DH or kids, I didn't mind so much, but why should I "hold on" while you're talking to Aunt Wilma about your dog's bowel issues? I swear to God...and it happened more than once. They would just hold up the entire line! For the love of God! LOL. I know that people have the right to do what they want to do and I'm not saying anyone should regulate talking on the phone (but it should be banned while driving). I think that people who have to have the cell phone to their ear constantly are just insecure. It's like they have to have someone "there" with them at all times. I have no problems if you want to talk all day long, 24-7 at home. That doesn't affect me in any way, shape, or form! Have at it! I do take the time to listen to what people who call me are saying. But I have to be in the mood to hear it. If I'm not in the mood to talk, I'm not going to be in the mood to listen. Which is why most of the time, I'll call them back so I can sit down and really pay attention to what they have to say. ~Lisa

Oh yes, I have followed some of those people!
Some are really rude! A couple of them have snapped at the cashier " Well , Did I get everything?"
I always think if they got off the phone they could have paid attention and would have known!!

I have heard them talking while in the stalls in the ladys room. just chit -chat??

I do NOT like to talk on the phone either.

They did a test and found that people who were annoyed with cell phone conversations were really mostly annoyed because they could only hear one side of the conversation.

They were not annoyed when two people were talking at the same or a louder volume than one person talking on a cell phone.
I am always amused when people say they don't like to hear people talking on a phone. Hello? It's all right for me to talk to the person next to me- that's not annoying but when I am talking to someone you can't see that's annoying?

It's amazing to me how people regulate other people. I will continue to talk on my phone not when I am in line or should be talking to the cashier I am neither a heathen nor a moron.
It's not the cell phones believe me those rude people are most likely always rude whether they talk on their phone or not.
I'm not being bitchy I am honestly curious-what is the difference between me talking on my phone to someone you can't see and me talking to the person next to me that you can see? Now that you think about it that way seems kind of silly to complain doesn't it? If you don't like to hear people talking why are you in public?

Or is it just that people find the fact that people talk on their phones annoying? And for what reason? If I am at the store shopping for an hour that is the perfect time to have a phone talk with someone.
I am an intelligent polite considerate person and I see nothing wrong with it.

I have no interest in the other end of the conversation. I just think they look stupid walking around a store looking like they are talking to their self!
So how do they account for us being upset when we see a reckless driver with one glued to his ear??
They do cause accidents! Also very serious injuries.

This was in the paper here today.

On Dec. 16, 2006, I was involved in a motorcycle accident. I want to say CHEERS to all who have helped me in the past 20 months, from the first responders from fire station No. 2, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority paramedics, the emergency room staff at Luthern Hospital, all the nurses and volunteers in the Musculoskeletol Center in my seven surgeries, Dr. Hicks and his staff at Fort Wayne Orthopedics and Cindy Toll, my physical therapist, and finally Kent Turnbow at SRT Prosthetics, who has been a great help to me after I finally had my leg amputated.

JEERS to the motorist who did not pay attention while driving and talked on a cell phone and turned in front of me. Also JEERS to the state of Indiana for not requiring drivers to carry more than $25,000 of liability insurance to drive legally. This barely covers the ambulance, the emergency room and a hospital stay for one day. Our lawmakers need to change this law and, instead of worrying about smoking ordinances, should do something about people driving while talking on cell phones .

It annoys me when people walk around with a cell phone attached to their head for two reasons:

- They are oblivious to what is going on around them. They cut in front of you, block the aisles, hold up lines and so on.

- They tend to talk louder than two people who are side-by-side. Can you hear me NOW?

Does not apply to me. And I certainly don't keep a phone glued to my ear while I drive although I do answer. The way I see it people are either rude or not, oblivious or not, careful drivers or not, very loud talkers or not, etc and they will do what they do whether they have a phone to their ear or they are just there.

I have done plenty of shopping and I drive for my job and I have seen lots and lots of people do the things mentioned and they had no phone. And I always have to laugh at the grocery store when someone gets annoyed standing there. They could say "excuse me" or clear their throat or something. If I am looking at several different items comparing nutritional info and price (not talking on my phone) I don't have eyes in the back of my head just let me know you are there.

I think this stems to an issue of rudeness not phones. I guess that's all I am going to say on this issue unless someone has something really compelling to add.
