Question Question about home heating...Oil to Gas

Has anyone made the switch from oil to gas??? My husband just decided that he wants to do this. Is it expensive? I am thinking we need to take out a loan now. Any help is appreciated...

I got a grant from the state a few years ago for a new furnace, air conditioning (on oxygen), hot water heater and updated electric and free weatherization and all new duct work for the air conditioning.
The old furnace was bad and leaking something and burning oil like crazy so my daughter called the state they inspected and said you get a new furnace and when they saw that I was on oxygen they added the air conditioning. Then the chimney was not in good repair so they rerouted that thru the basement walls then had to change the hot water heater so that it could vent thru the walls and upgraded the electric to run it all .

It is a gas unit and is so much cheaper to run and works very well. The entire thing was just under ten thousand dollars and I had to pay nothing. The state also has a program for loans at one percent to upgrade houses. This is in Baltimore County Maryland thru the weatherization program.

I wouldnt rush into gas right now, its as bad as oil here, and may get worse. Our electric rates are supposed to go up 37% in january..I am waiting to see what happens. We have oil too, but we also have a woodburner, so while we are figuring out what to do, i bought alot of extra wood. What I am seriusly considering is solar panels or a windmill. I would hate to invest that much money and be in the same predicament we are already in. Have you considered a wood or pellet stove?? Lots of people in our area are going back to coal

I was going to say natural gas is not cheap to heat your house, we pay anywhere between $2-$400 a month in the winter depending on how cold it is and we keep our thermastat on 68. Plus all the utilities are requesting rate hikes right now. When we lived in VA we heated with oil/radiator heat house was built in 1911, I loved that type of heat, much better than natural gas and forced air that we have now. Because when you have natural gas, you also have to pay for electricity to force the warm air out if you have the central heat, so you are paying for gas and electricity to heat your house. The above amount does not include the electric bill which is about the same amount, that is just for the gas.
