Olympics -- What's with the cowgirls?

Anyone catch the explanation of why the Olympic opening ceremonies have all those women dress as cowgirls waving by the side? I don't understand what cowgirls have to do with China!

Good question...I was wondering the same thing last night while watching. I did say to my daughter, "darn, they must be tired constantly dancing around like that this whole time!"

Strange, because they were wearing holsters and I never saw a cheerleader wear a holster before!

That's what Matt Lauer called them, I have no idea.

My question is...the little boy who walked next to Chin'a Flag Bearer had a flag of China that upside down...was there a reason or think it was an oversight??

He was a 9 year old boy who rescued classmates after the recent earthquake. I don't know about the flag though.

Here's what I found about the flag:

What the picture published in the official Chinese media does not show is that the flag in Lin’s little hand is upside down, as seen in an uncropped picture that the state-media did not publish.

An upside-down flag is the international nautical convention for “great distress.” In this case, Lin’s flag seems to send the message, this country is in crisis.

Chinese bloggers are talking about this online, and many think this was not a coincidence. Right after the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, China's communist regime refused assistance from international rescue teams for the critical first 72 hours. Endemic corruption amongst officials appeared to be a contributing factor in the collapse of poorly constructed school buildings, killing thousands of children.

In their online statements, some bloggers have wondered whether perhaps some invisible behind-the-scenes hand inverted the child's flag, reminding people of the Chinese regime’s role in the Sichuan tragedy. These bloggers see the upside down flag as a distressed cry to the rest of the world for help.

Thanks! I had seached and searched and had found nothing about it. I must have been searching the wrong words.

It suprises me that no one around him exchanged flags with him. They showed him about 6 or 7 times.

Off the subject I know, but that little boy was just precious! I loved it when the announcers were intereviewing the basketball player, and when they went to say goodbye, the little boy said "thank you, thank you"...so sweet! ~Lisa
