What do you do for Exercise?

I used to run when I was in my teens and twenties but just stopped for some reason -- I guess I used life's responsibilities as an excuse. I had a job, a home, a husband, and then kids to care for. I just used these things as excuses and I got really lazy about exercise and for the last 20 years, I haven't done enough to stay fit.

I recently had an opportunity to take a yoga class for free. We met once a week for four weeks and I did yoga at home everyday between the classes. I am hooked! I love it, love it, love it! I'm so happy that I've started doing this because I've gotten a mushy middle, lumpy thighs, and zero energy. Just one month of yoga has made a big difference. My waist is not as mushy, I've lost a few pounds, I'm moving easier through my day -- I don't ache at the end of the day anymore and it's a great stress reliever.

Do you have an activity that you do to stay fit? Do you love it? look forward to doing it?

I walk a minimum of two and a maximum of four miles a day. I do Pilates at least twice a week for an hour.

I have always heard that yoga is great.

I think it's wonderful for people to find something they like and do it. Because as those of us who were statues for years and started moving can tell you: it not only makes you look better you feel wonderful! It starts out as a chore and some days it still feels like a chore when I start. But soon it feels good and exercising is something you begin to look forward to. It is positive time alone for your thoughts, your music or just sweet empty headedness.

I totally look forward to doing my walking (as does my doggie) and my Pilates.

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE to swim so going to the lake in summer is like Heaven to me. If I were rich (translated=when I win the lottery LOL) I will have a huge in ground pool. If I had a a pool I would be wrinkled from spending so much time there. Sigh.

I do at least two miles on my treadmill at least four days a week, (Mon, Wed. Fri. and usually Saturday) and I also use my Gazelle.
I lift weights the same three days that I use my treadmill. That usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes.
I just started doing Pilates on Tues. and Thursday. (at home)
I use to do my treadmill six days a week, but I haven't been seeing the results I was hoping for, so I am shaking it up a bit by changing my routine to two days of Pilates. I also push mow our entire lawn at least once a week. It takes about two and half hours to complete the job, the hills are a killer! My family also takes our dog for a two mile walk several days a week after we eat dinner!
There are days when I really enjoy the exercise and there are days when I really don't want to do it! But, I always feel much better once I accomplish my goal.
The older I get the more I realize how important exercise is to maintain your health. Now....if I could just take off and keep off those last five pounds!

I like to run but lately I haven't. I broke my toe a few months ago and just got back into shoes (thenk God its summer and flip flops are the norm). It is hard for me with a 3 year old that gets into EVERYTHING as soon as your back is turned. Yesterday while I was running (on a treadmill, of course) she discovered she can open the fridge.

LOL.

I do the treadmill a couple times a week, and recently started doing Wii Fit.

I made the decision to lose a few pounds, and get down to my goal weight (my goal for the last couple years, LOL) of 125. I only have 4.5 pounds to go!!

DH, OTOH, weighed in at 253, and even at his 6'3 height, that is still considered obese.

He is doing the same - Wii Fit & treadmill - plus watching his calorie count (he LOVES fast food).

He has already lost 10 pounds, and his goal is 225 (for now) which is still overweight, but better than 253.

I do cardio kickboxing a few days a week with some work friends. We got at lunch, it's a private class. It is awsome!!! Great fun and really sweats you up. We've also done pilates, which is tough, but definetly pays off..... there are a few guys who do PX90 series, that's a good one too.... I've done all kinds of stuff over the years, the one I like best, therefore stick with, is definetly the boxing.

Yeah, me, too.

But I don't enjoy it at all -- I only go because I have to. At my age (61), I know that I need to force myself to exercise.

Unfortunately, the Curves I go to is nothing like the commercials on tv: all the women laughing and having a great time -- forming friendships, etc. The women who go to my Curves barely speak to each other. I've tried very hard to get conversations going with no luck most days. Even the employee just sits at her desk and reads newspapers/magazines. She is NEVER on the floor monitoring the women.

I go to the gym and find a peice of cardio with a nice view and do that for a min. of 30 minutes or until my view vacates. I'll do some weight training about 2-3 a week. I prefer to do the weight training on days/times that I know the gym is less crowded.

I run 5-6 days a week. DD is a swimmer, so when she starts up for the season, I alternate with swimming a couple of days a week. I am so proud that I can now swim a mile nonstop!

That's really too bad. I'm fortunate that the people I see at Curves are cordial and friendly--which helps make the time go by faster some days! But overall, I really like the circuit training...."Change stations"!

Wow...I am impressed. I am having trouble even staying at my current weight, despite my efforts in the exercise department, and a 1,200 calorie a day eating plan. It took me almost five months to shed 18lbs.

For 5 years I walked about 3 miles a day with a friend. Then I moved across town.

I started going to Jazzercise 9 1/2 months ago. For a while I really got into it, but lately I've been dreading it. I lost 12% body fat, but no weight. I am getting frustrated with the slow progress.

I went to a yoga class with a friend and I'm thinking about switching to that after the 1st of the year.

I feel your pain about being frustrated. Its hard when you see people get quick results and it takes some of us much longer to get even small results. I did my weekly weigh in this morning and I had gained over a pound. Which is really frustrating. Yesterday, I did two miles on my treadmill (took me 30 minutes) at a steep incline, and then lifted weights and did ab work for about 40 more minutes. After that I cleaned my house for two hours and then took the dog for a two mile walk. I also stayed within my 1,200 calories for the day. The day before I spent over two hours mowing my lawn, and did pilates. One day runs into another....
I feel like the older I get (almost 46) the harder it is to stay healthy. I just can't seem to lose that last five pounds. Heck...at this point I am having trouble even staying at my current weight despite exercising six days and week and watching what I eat! I have heard wonderful things about Yoga, good luck, maybe shaking up your routine will help!

I have 5 kids now (I have been popping in here and there - and back then I had my 3 daughters and then a surprise baby son). Now I have another little girl. They are aged 3, 5, 10, 13, and 17.

The dust has settled in my life (lol) so to speak...

I manage to exercise every day, including Sundays. I workout with my older girls at the gym and I also do my cardio at home since I have a Cybex stairstepper, an elliptical, and a Trotter treadmill. I mix it up with Pilates and yoga, too.

I try to take walks/jogs with my whole family at least twice a week. Even the younger 3 exercise at home, too. It's a family thing and we all enjoy it.

I take a spinning class 2 or 3 times a week, lift weights twice a week. It works for me.

I just saw a friend I haven't seen in years. The last time I saw her was when I was taking her aerobics class. She is a personal trainer and she spent a little time showing me some stuff I could do at home, without any equipment. I do four sets of 25 push-ups off the kitchen counter. I know this sounds wayyyyyyy too easy, but I have never been this sore from any workout I have ever done. You stand away from the counter, and literally do push ups into the counter. Then I do four sets of 25 side leg lifts and back leg lifts (for the butt). The best thing about doing these is that you can do a the sets of 25 during the day. You don't do all 100 at once. I do them everyday. There can be no excuses for not doing these. It takes a matter of minutes. No equipment required. She also suggested that I do twenty trips up over the hill next door. Walk as fast as I can, using a deep stride.
I have equipment in my basement that I use almost daily, but it is nice to get a break and shake up my routine a little. I start back to work in a week and I have been worried that I might not have enough time to do my complete workout everyday, because most days it takes me over an hour to complete. She also suggested I start eating more protein (I sometimes think that I don't eat enough). I know that sounds weird, but I have become so use to eating 1,200 calories that its become part of my life. Now....I can't seem to get those last five pounds off. I haven't lost any weight in almost four months, and I have been having trouble keeping off what I already lost! I guess I will try and see if making a few changes helps me reach my goal.

I walk 5 -6 miles six times a week. We live in a very hilly area so it is an awesome workout. I average a 12 milunte mile. I really want to either get back into body-sculpting, yoga or pilates. I miss those types of classes.

I'm a member at a gym affiliated with my employeer. It's not the biggest or nicest facility, but the staff is great and friendly and takes lots of time to work with us individually or just stop and chat. The other members there are great too. There's all shapes and sizes and ages of people and there's no pressure to be the biggest or lift the most nor is there meat market vibe. And it's cheap.

I'm at the gym five days a week for cardio, weight three times a week, abs class twice a week and, when I'm not having knee issues, I do kickboxing at least once a week. About every 8 months or so I have the trainers put together a new workout for me (mostly for the weights) based on what's going on in my life, how much time I have, what trips/events I'm preparing for, etc. They also recommend classes that I might enjoy and find useful. I've found having them put together a workout to be very helpful. I've gotten great results following their suggestions and have really enjoyed it. This is a free service, up to three (or maybe four) times a year for all members, so it doesn't even cost me anything extra.

I've been going to the gym regularly for the past over eight years now. Over the past about three years I've become more serious (working harder, getting workouts put together, etc). And I've not only come to enjoy my time at the gym more but also to really enjoy the results.

You are so right! My kids make fun of the way I dance..."it's so 80's" they say! Hee hee. You said that you are about my age...so our moves must be the same. There's a concert tonight that I wish so much I could have gone to here in the ATL...It will be awesome I'm sure...

Yes LIsa 80's dance moves are what I am about, I try to do some of the moves my younger dd Caitlin does and the kids get a good laugh out of it, But I know I look silly but who cares its all for fun. I have to admit even though I do love love the 80 music , my heart belongs to Led Zepplin and Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac, i simply love love the way Stevie Nicks dresses, I love all her outfits. So us old people we can still dance and if we look bad , whew when my father in law starts to strut his stuff, it way so funny. But I am glad he is healthy and just turned 80 . So Lisa there is help for us yet. Peace. Catherine
