Unhappy I feel like we didn't do anything this whole summer

The summer is almost over here, only 3 weeks until school and I feel like we did nothing for the kids this year. They had some activities, we did VBS, DS went to a science camp and DD had summer dance classes, but as a family we didn't do anything except go to the fair. Last year we had a really bad summer in more ways than one and didn't do anything and I had a lot of hope for this year.

I was trying to talk DH into going to the shore for a couple of days but he doesn't want to take the time off and we really don't have the extra money.

I feel like the kids didn't get much of a summer and I feel bad for them. There are day trips around here, but DH won't take off for just that, he doesn't want to take off at all honestly.

I just needed to vent, maybe here that there are others who just stayed home all summer too?

We didnt do much of anything here either. We had plans on going to the beach more often, to six flags, some day trips,to the
aquarium, and the only thing we did was go to wildwood for Memorial Day weekend, and that sorta s*cked cause my oldest son stayed home had a party and got himself into trouble, we should of just stayed home. So dont feel so bad I think we did less than you guys

My kids are already back in school and I've thought to myself where did summer go? We didnt do too much this summer either. Is there anyway that you and your kids could go on those day trips? Back when I was married my x never would take off work either so I figured out really quick if we were gonna do anything I had to figure out how to do it myself. and me and the kids had great times together going and doing things. Just a thought.

You do what you can. Make some activity around the house or neighborhood/community for the kids.

That's where I wanted to go! We haven't been to Wildwood in about 12 years and the kids would love it! DS asked today if we could go to the ocean. I just don't think taking 2 kids by myself for the 3 hour trip each way and then on the beach all day is such a good idea, it certainly would not be relaxing.

I think the big thing is to do something as a family, not even so much go somewhere. BUT if we stay home to do stuff as a family we end up doing stuff around the house and not really doing something together. We have had a birthday party every weekend this month so we haven't been bored, but we haven't had much quality family time together.

I felt this summer was a bust also. Gas and food prices really kept us grounded. I feel bad for all of us but I'm glad I'm not the only mom thinking that I let my kids down......

I worked much of the summer doing extra shifts & griping about it. I was able to take my child to Florida for 3 days, otherwise it was just sleep & work. My child & husband worked as well. Oh well, maybe we can do something in the fall or spring.

We usually go on a trip out of state, but, didn't do that this year......DD had things going on at school, the dog was sick, and we had a family committment we had to attend. I really look forward to our out of state trip, but, we'll go in November, so that's good.

Flipper, can you go to your local Chamber of Commerce and check out some local things??? Maybe there is an historic area w/in an hour's drive that you can all go to, and find a park where you can eat a picnic lunch???

Have a bunch of kids over to your house (I know....like THAT is relaxing....LOL) for a BBQ and water balloon fight. Take the kids to the beach and have a treasure hunt.

I think it's kind of funny......even when we went on a trip over the Summer, the kids would say to their friends "we had a boring summer". oh well.....

I was thinking the same thing actually. DH is on vacation, as well as I this coming week. We are not going to Long Island for my niece's wedding like we planned, it just was going to cost way too much and they are having a reception here in September. But we do have some fun activities planned like the beach, fair, zoo, puttputt golf, drive ins, bowling, chuck e. cheese- nothing big at all. Most people when they ask what are you doing for vacation and I reply that they look like "oh big deal" Most people are going to Fla. or on expensive trips. I am sure we will have more fun as a family like this. Last summer was so very awful that I am just thankful that this summer has not been as bad even though we have done nothing extra. So when DH gets home tonight, he's off for 9 days (including weekends) and I am too so I am looking forward to spending some nice time as a family.
Maybe you could do a local zoo with your kids, go to mcdonald's or maybe a picnic lunch? How old are your kids? A lot depends on the ages I guess.
The summer has surely flown though. Here in central NY it's been very cool for August. That makes it seem more like fall already too!

I feel like we didn't have time to do half of the things we wanted! DS was gone to a youth theology camp in June. Then came vacation in Williamsburg, a week in Minnesota, Boy Scout camp, another trip to Minnesota, and here it is the middle of August. Oh, and try to throw in a bunch of college visits - 4 so far - on the open days.

I'm with you flipper. I feel the same way. I feel guilty that we didn't do all of the things that I had planned for us to do. I just don't know where the time went. Now they are back in school. I don't think that they had a bad summer, but a boring one. I wasn't feeling too well this summer so I feel I have somewhat of an excuse...but still... Hopefully next summer things will be a bit different and we'll do more. We were all just really lazy doing nothing. What a waste... ~Lisa

Well we decided to go to the Bronx Zoo this weekend with some friends. Maybe if we do some stuff as a family on the weekends I won't feel like we didn't spend time together? I even thought about bringing the kids to the ocean myself just for the day, at least they would get to go. And all of that is more manageable money wise too, instead of spending over $500 just on a hotel for a couple of nights.

Thanks for sharing, it's nice to hear that I'm not really the only one going nowhere this year. I realize that day trips as long as we are together are just as fun, even though they are different that what I had envisioned us doing this year.

We did a ton of camping this summer. Do you camp? Once you have the stuff, it doesnt cost much and we get way more excercise when camping than at home, walking, bikeriding, swimming etc...
We even went once for 8 nights and the kids never got bored.
