How many of your kids have/had homework during the summer?

How many of your kids get homework during the summer? I thought all school districts do this. DD (9th grade) had assignments for Honors History and Honors English. DS (5th grade) had a math packet and reading.

She had to do 6 chapters in history and several web quests - including graphic organizers.

She had to read 4 books and take notes for English. During the first 2 weeks of school they will be tested, have to do essays and something else on the 4 books read.

His math packet was only about 40 pages long. He wasn't assigned specific books to read, he just had to read and log his time.

DD will be a sophomore and had to read 2 books for honors English and 2 books for honors history, She'll have to write an essay on the reading sometime during the first few weeks of school. My other school aged child is going into fourth grade so no summer work for her.

DS2, a freshman this year, had to read two books this summer (down from 3 in previous years) - Into Thin Air by John Krakauer and The Murder of Tutankhamen by Brier, Bob. He's not honors, but I love him anyways.

My 6 grader had an optional math packet that was about 35 pages long. We made her do it. She worked on it off an on all summer but of course finished the last 2 pages last night and school started today.

My freshman didn't have any.

Both Senior DD and Sophmore DS had to read a book off a school made list and watch the corresponding movie and do a comparative analysis of the two. Both also had to read a second novel off the list. DD had other homework as well (not sure what but she's been working on it off & on all summer) and DS had to visit two museums and do write-ups on 3 different exhibits at each museum. DD is in honors and has 4 AP classes this year. DS is in normal CP (college prep) classes.

My kids never had any through 8th grade, but once they start taking AP or Honors courses in high school, it is required. This year my son has to read a short textbook and a novel for AP English Lit. AP U.S. history requires that they read and take notes on an entire textbook before the course begins. If they can't do that by that age, they don't stand much of a chance with the AP exams.

In my school it has varied every year but usually they have to read a book or two. When my son was in highschool, he had to read a book and do a written report. It had to be mailed to the teacher by mid-July and they got out of school the first week of June.

My 8th grader and 12th grader both have 3 books to read and to expect book reports on all of them. My 5th grader just has to read. My kindergartener had no assignments. I give them workbooks and worksheets, but that's just what our family does.

My 3 yo daughter is homeschooled for now.

DD, 16, has had to read Frankentstein, Geat Expectations, and Lord of the Flies. Take 100- 150 notes on two of the books, and two essays. There will also be a summer reading test when school starts next week. This is for honors English.
DD, 13, had to read two books from a large selection of choices and he will have a summer reading test as well.

DH and I give our kids a little bit of homework each day. We usually buy a workbook for the elementary grade level they will be entering in the fall and have them work on that. They are also required to read at least one book per day and usually have one big goal. Total time spent per day on homework is less than one hour & it doesn't hurt them a bit. Also gives them a leg up when they start in the fall.

Thankfully mine didn't have any. When they are bored around here, I will make them sit and do their age appropriate activity books. My 9yr. old DS loves to read, so he has read a bunch of books on his own. DS#1 had to practice his French Horn a lot to get ready for college. My 15yr. old isn't taking any honors classes, so none for him.

No summer homework here. I know some Pre-AP & AP classes in highschool have some summer reading. Other than that, I don't know of any. We have a boy going into Kindergarten, a girl going into 5th grade and a girl going into 9th grade.
Fortunately, the two older ones are voracious readers. We don't ever have to ask/tell them to read. Sometimes we have to tell them to put the books down. LOL Our 5 year old seems to be following in their footsteps.
