what do you think happened ? re: class ring

HHHmmmm...

I owed only $45 on my ds's class ring. I have been making payments. I sent a check for $53 for the last payment..that was to cover the $45 plus a shipping and handling charge.

I mailed the payment on Aug 1...still have not got the ring..I called today...the rep. finally called me back.

she stated they never got my last payment. was I sure I mailed it ? I looked in my check reg. and saw the check made out. I called the bank, the check was not cashed...I called the ring place back..they said they never got my last payment..( btw, the lady was very nice about it, and helping me out trying to figure out what happened )..

Now, the thing of it is, I am almost POSITIVE I mailed it out..I reme3mber writing out the check, and I remember MAILING it..the reason I remember mailing it, I thought to myself, " There ! That is the last payment ! Now I will not have to hear my son asking me a hundred times when his ring will get there"...

I also remember making a special trip down to the post office and putting it in the mailbox...cause usually I just wait until I have a pile of mail to mail off ..

so, what do you think happened ? I MAY have written the wrong address...I had JUST got home from driving to Fla so I was pretty tired...but, if that was the case, don't you think the post office would of sent it back to me by now ? Posted ..." Address not found "..or something to that effect...

The check I wrote out was for Aug..1..how long would it take ?

I've had items mailed from ca and ny mailed to nj and the ca made it here almost a week before ny did. i believe it'd depend on what type opf connections it would have had to take to get from A to B, then it could have gotten jammed in the machine. Cancel and send another one or wait a bit longer it was only mailed on the 1st. reminds me of a book i mailed, was suppose to have gone maybe 30 miles from me. took 3 weeks to go from nj, over the river and up the other side aways

It definately could have gotten lost in the mail - I've had that happen before.

Or, the other thing I did once when we were 1st married - I put the mortgage payment in the student loan envelope. Then, guess what - the student loan company cashed it (even though it was not made out to them), the bank let them and the student loan company took it upon themselves to apply 2 months payments and the rest to principal.

When I got the late notice for the late mortgage payment, it took a while to figure out what happened. I swore I paid it - it was in my checkbook register. My check had been received & cashed. I had to get a copy to prove it, then the mortgage company pointed out that it wasn't their endorsement. Then it was lots of fun trying to get my money back from the student loan company.

All sorts of stuff could have happened...

It probably got lost in the mail.
Lots of crazy things can happen to mail at the post office. One day I got an envelope in a plastic bag in my mailbox. On the bag was a notice that said "OOPS!" on it along with some other post office mumble jumble about the letter getting caught up in the automated machinery, blah, blah. The long and short of it was that the envelope looked like it had been chewed by a teething puppy and was scorched in a couple places.
Luckily the contents were slavageable and even if they weren't it was just a coupon trade so it really wouldn't have been the end of the world if it wasn't(ok, it might have been the end of my world since I'm a coupon queen, lol!).

I'd give it a few more days and if it doesn't show up, send another check and put a stop payment on the lost one. Or ask the ring company if you can make a credit card payment over the phone. That way you KNOW the payment was made and they got the money.

At my bank, stopping payment would be nearly the same as the cost of the check, so I wouldn't do that. The odds are good it was lost or will be returned to you by the PO. If the ring company cashes it twice, you'll be able to see and get your money back.

I agree. Isn't it something like $36.00 to cancel a check now at some banks?

Since you mailed it August 1 (which was a Friday), could it be possible it didn't go out till the following Monday? It may be slow getting there. I definitely wouldn't stop payment on it.

Maybe send another check. If the other one shows up, tell the lady you talked to to tear that one up and notify you or send you a refund.

Wachovia here just went up to 43.00 for a stop payment ..
At the other bank we have an account with its still 35.00..

It probably got lost in the mail. I remember after we had a hurricane here all the mail was messed up for months !! the one and ONLY time our mortgage payment has been late was then. Even tho, there was no postal service here for nearly 3 weeks the mortgage company said too bad too sad here eat this late payment which at that time was 1.5% of mortgage payment = 65.00 late payment.

My husband works on those computeized machines at the post office. The envelopes are run through a series of runners which works on friction to advance the envelopes. The slightest glitch- a stamp edge not secured, a flap not sealed evenly, ANYTHING can cause an envelope to snag and therefore shred. Muy husband says that in one room (these machines are massive--a half a city block long) the paper "fluff "from the friction is ankle deep!! It is more a miracle that a envelope gets there then it does not get there!!

I once got a Xmas card in March - it was postmarked in the beginning of December. It had a check in it and the sender thought I was rude for not sending a thank you! Go figure.
