Exclamation Who's watching the Democratic Nat'l Convention??

Not trying to get a heated debate going like the other political threads on the Election Board, just wondering. That's why I put this post here, and not there.

I have it on and really enjoy listening to all the speakers. I am hoping Ted Kennedy does indeed speak tonite. Caroline Kennedy is such a class act, too. What an absolute testament to her parent's legacy.

Both dh and I were struck by the look of worry on the face of Maria Shriver. I hope she doesn't know something about Senator Kennedy that we don't.

Nope, it's going on an hour away and that's enough for me. Obama is not even here...won't be til Wed or Thurs morning. I like the debates between the candidates but the conventions are so not my thing. Won't watch the Republican one either.

Me me I am watching I am a very very liberal left winged democratic person to the end and cannot wait to get rid of bush and hopefully Obama will help this country , because we truly truly need hell. Again I do not want any trouble because I know talking about politics can get heated, but personally this is my choice and I sincerely hope we may remove our troops and bring them home safely. On a finale note its about time we will have a Black American as a president, its so over due and perhaps one day we will also get a women , I just want them to be democratic. Peace to all Catherine

Ok, I guess I have a stupid question here: WHY do some people who are half black and half white (as Obama is) say they are BLACK and not WHITE? I guess I never go that. If he wins, to me, he's not a "black president"...he's the person who happens to be president. He is both black and white if you want to get technical I suppose. Why can't he just be "a candidate for president?"

Ok You must have read it wrong I will say I am gald to see a Black/white american runing for president and btw it is a bit over time we have elected a black american into the office, do you think not, do you think black americans do not belong here, it was past their due. In fact i wsh is dr Martin Luther King was alive he would have made a wonderful president, did not mean to step on anyone's toes. Hope this clears things up. Peace , Catherine

Well, that is an easy question to answer, if you have one drop of black blood, you were considered black. If your mother was black, you were considered black. If Borack Obama showed up at your doorstep to date your daughter, would you think "Nice looking white man" or would you think "Black Man".

It is history that to be Black in America was clearly defined as having one drop of Negro Blood.

Valorian , Hon I am not turning this post into a politican debate, i just merely spoke my 2 cents worth into that i am a proud democrat and the orginial poster asked who was watching the democratic convention, thats all. I honestly do not want to see any posts about politics because it becomes too heated. Just say you will vote for and that should be the end. peace. Catherine

I don't care if we have a male, female, black, white, Asian, Latino, whatever president as long as it's a GOOD president. I do hate hearing stuff like the above quote though. Should we elect someone just because he's Black? A woman? I sure hope not. We need someone with experience (which Obama does not have) to lead this country. Not watching too closely 'cause it's rather boring. The debates however will be great!

Ok allI am saying is that no matter what the color race or creed or religion we need someone new in the white house. Period. Its time for change and whomever that person may be, they will be better then what bush has done, but again my opinion. Why is there so much discussion about a Black American becoming president or a women its is due time As far as experience, any job we enter into we may not always have the best experience, But I am confident Obama will bring this beautiful countty of ours back and we sure need the help. Who ever does get elected i will admit, does have a huge work load ahead of them. This has been the worst 8 years ever, if you agree with me then fine, if not then thats fine too, We all have our own personal views and we all should listen and respect all views. Personally has i have sent before. I wish John F. Kennedy Jr. lived long enough to become president. I feel he would have made a wonderful president. So we will have to see what happens in the future. Peace Catherine

I think they identify more with the shade of their skin. Barack Obama is darker skinned, hence resembles "black" more than white. Same with Halle Berri. I don't know of any people that are a mix of black and white, but are very fair skinned...... hmmmm, might have to google it.

Valorian, I posted here to try and bring in people who would otherwise not get involved in the Election Board. Just a simple question of who is watching, a very non debateable question, or so I thought.

The original questions was "who's watching the Dem. convention?"

The answer requires a simple "I am" or "we are"--not some long diatribe about how liberal you are, or what your beliefs are.

For example, jaded answered and made a comment about Caroline Kennedy's speech.

You don't want to see any posts about politics, but yet you've made several in this thread. You are some piece of work lady.

To answer the original question--I did not, nor do I plan to. How many speeches do we need to hear on the virtues of any particular party platform or candidate? (this is true on both sides of the aisle)

I haven't watched it, but I should have tuned in to watch Caroline Kennedy. She's a wonderful lady...a real class act. I wish she was running for President! I'm sure JFK and Jackie would be very proud of her. ~Lisa

I did not watch.

Both parties have their candidates. I heard it costs $50 million to put on the Democratic convention. I'm sure the Republican one will be in the same range. I wish they'd cancel both conventions and donate the approx. $100 million to charity.

Think about how many people could be helped by that? - homeless, food, shelter, insurance for children, flood victims etc.

Thanks for the link! To answer your question, I try not to see "color" and try to be color blind. I have no idea what blood runs through my veins. I have a spanish cousin who has the same tone as Obama so I would most likely not say "black" but think "mixed" or "spanish" but that is my circumstance. It has nothing to do with politics. I think we are overdue for a GOOD president...something we haven't had in a long time. I don't think anyone has their "due' time. I don't care who you are. We are all just people...the human race.

$50 million is for security for both conventions. I had not seen a figure for actually putting on the conventions.

While I do like to hear the "messages" and speakers, it does not influence my vote. I agree, the money could be spent better, to do more good.

Totally off subject, but I happened to catch a convention interview with Jimmy Carter. His left eye looked terrible! Does anybody know if perhaps he recently had surgery? I could hardly focus on the interview because I kept looking at his eye!

Absolutely. I'm watching all week, especially Thursday.
For those that are watching and don't want to see the commentaries, between-break interviews or pundits' talk, CSPAN is the channel to tune in.

this is directed to Marilynk, do you personally have sometime againist me, its seems every time I post you have serious issues with my posts. Then you say some negative stuff about me for what, I have not said nothing negative about everyone in this post. Yes the topic was about a convention and a democratic convention, which I think would be normal to make some mention of politics since they are all tried together. Why are you so upset, I said I did not want to turn this into a political debate, because these subjects just get way to heated. Why cannot I not come here and speak my views, I just mentioned I was democrat, because we were talking about the democrat convention>Seriously Marilynk why are you so upset. On a final note I personally feel we need a big change and I also feel that its 2008 and a Black American or a Women deserves a chance, and for that matters anyone knew deserves a chance. Peace. Well hon i am no shrinking voilet myself and am tired of all this nonsense, I answered the post and I simply made mention that I am a liberal left winged democrat and she gets upsets. We were taking about a political convention here , now if i interjected and started talking about something totally off the subject, I think people would have got more upset, Sheesh take a chill pill marilynk and relax, and do not call me a piece of work, that was not called for. upset? OH PUHLEASE....

I reserve my emotions for people I know and give a damn about.

I just found it odd that you don't want political type posts, but yet you have to declare your beliefs and your liberal views.

If the question had been "who's watching the Olympics"? Would you have gone off about how horrible Communist China is?

If you're going to take each and every comment so personal then I would suggest that you find a public board that matches your beliefs so as to not have your delicate sensibilities offended.

I agree.

What exactly is the purpose of the conventions? The candidates have been chosen and the debates have been held. Does anyone actually decide who to vote for based on the conventions

Take that obscene amount of money and use it for something worthwhile -- like Lisa listed.

That is a very condescending statement.

What in the world does it being "2008" have to do with whether a "Black American or a Women (sic) "deserves a chance"......? Did they not "deserve a chance" in 2004 or 2000?

........."and for that matters anyone knew (sic) deserves a chance". So someone would be qualified to be President of the United States simply because he/she is "Black American, a Women (sic) or "knew"?

Not watching the convention, because it is just a propaganda dog and pony show. I have already studied the platforms and ideals of the candidates and do not think that what goes on at the convention is anything but fluff. However, I did YouTube the presentation of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and the Teddy Kennedy speeches. I will watch the speeches of HRC and Bill Clinton as well as probably Biden and Obama's speeches. As I said, I know enough about the candidates to know where my vote will be going though so this is curiosity only.

Red face

If you listen carefully and read carefully you will see, when i said its 2008 a Black American or a women derserves to be president, but I wish it would have happened way before that, every single american derserves a chance no matter race creed color or religon. Btw I get the feeling some of you ladies think I am a Black American, no I am not. I am white so why is a few ladies harping on the subject of a Black American deserving to become president like I said we need a serious change here. Why do you ladies want to start trouble. Why do I have to have the fear of coming here and posting my thoughts, some of you ladies need to act a little nicer and not jump all over people. No one here owns the boards , yet some of you ladies think you do. Catherine

I will only end a post or a thread now to people I feel deserve to be told peace. I am not going to be a phony and tell someone peace when I do not mean peace. I say it and mean it every single time, it is my signature end of sentence for years and years and did not think by saying peace would cause such a stir and thats its funny. OH well cannot make everybody happy here and this thread was proof again. Catherine

Well yes, there is a clique on here that wait to bash certain posters. It's been stated before by people other than myself and Ilovelucy. We all know who they are. Lucy and I don't have a right to our opinions according to most of these people.

Duh I did not bash her at all. But of course you might have read something into it since that's one of your favorite pastimes. I can take all your bashing so leave lucy alone and vent on me.

Peace doesn't bother me a bit. I kind of liked it. As far as you "trashing anyone," I don't recall you ever telling anyone you hated hearing what they posted.
