Word processor question

I'm trying to work with a document someone else created, and it has retained some attributes I'd like to nix. Specifically, between each word is a bit of gray that's to *show* me where spaces are in the document.

Thanks, but I can see them without that gray placeholder thingy and I find them to be distracting!

How do I get rid of them? I'm using Open Office, not Word, but I assume if I knew what that was called I could figure out how to UN-format it.

Anyone?
Anyone?

Sorry WOW, I don't use Open Office, but I know in Microsoft Office if you go into the "view" tab you can control that feature there.

1. From the Tools menu, select Options.
2. In the Options dialog box, expand OpenOffice.org Writer.
3. Click Formatting Aids.
4. Clear the Spaces check box.
5. Click OK.
