Sleep number bed, thumbs up or down?

my dh and I are considering purchasing one. It will be about 2700.00. We don't know anyone who owns one. Are they wonderful? They feel great in the store. Do they hold up? Are there problems? Does the foam top sag and lose support?

We like firmer beds and our last bed set was great for the first 2 yrs. Then it formed depressions where we sleep (nesting as some people call it) and it doesn't give us the same support. Our lower backs really ache in the morning. We've rotated the mattress and have switched sides. That helped but now we're to the point we need a new bed.

So if you have a sleep number bed, how long have you owned it, how do you like it and if you could do it over would you buy it again or something else?

We tried the Sleep Number (in the store) but ended up buying a Tempurpedic bed. It's very firm which we wanted and we went ahead and got the model that can lift the head and foot of the bed and also has a massager. We LOVE this bed. Before we got it, we were both having very bad low back pain. Within three days of getting our new bed, our low back pain was gone.

When we first were married in 1974, we had a regular mattress. Back problems ran in my husband's family. After about 8 years, we bought a water bed. We enjoyed that and had two different ones. About 4 years ago, we got the sleep number. We got because my parents had one. My dad had had back surgery and it was the only one that he could sleep on. We love it because you can change it to the way you feel each day if you want. We like it softer.

We purchased a sleep number bed a year ago and we absolutely love it. It is holding up just fine and gives us a great sleep each night. I would definitely recommend one.

We were considering a sleep number bed several years ago and DH decided there were too many mechanicals involved with the motor, compressor, etc so we opted for the temperpedic and absolutely love it. We bought the entire set with the foundation, mattress, and pillows.

Going to bed at night is now my favorite part of the day.

we got one, kept it for a free trial for 3 months and sent it back. We hated it. Neither one of us could find a number we liked. Each side of the bed is one a separate section. So, anything in th middle feels weird. Often I roll into the middle. DH is pretty broad and we don't think his side was wide enough for him because the air pocket thing underneath kept making him feel like he was falling out of bed. It cost about $150 to ship it back about 6 years ago. I AM glad we tried it and was sad we didn't like it. We ended up with a foam latex mattress from Denver Mattress and LOVE it! They do the trials as well but we ended up loving it. It's similar to a temperpedic but firmer which we wanted.

good luck! I would try it. Like I said, ours was a month to try and then we called and said we didn't like it and they gave us 2 more months. After 3, it was easier to know if we wanted it or not. For the return shipping fee, I think its worth it to try

I loved ours at 1st and maybe 3 years but beyond that, the pillowtop of the mattress needs replacing
cause its not a pillowtop anymore its like a pancake, I recently turned ours , so we are sleeping on the feet part of the mattress to see if that helps, granted mine is probably7- 8 years or so im not really sure
but its older and maybe they dont last this long........ and possibly they have improved them since
our ancient model, I do know they make ones that the bed is adjustable so you can watch tv and such
now I would love that.

I would hesitate to buy anything that advertises as heavily as they do. Probably more than half the cost of each set goes into advertising and endorsements. Check out Consumer Reports and see what they say and if they have no good information, just continue to do what you are doing now but with a general mattress query rather than the specific brand you are asking about.

And as ddist says, the pillowtop mattresses are limiting. You can't flip them like you can a regular mattress to give more even wear. This is particularly important if you have one or more people sleeping on the mattress who are heavy.

Love it, love it, love it

We have had both the regular mattress and the waterbed mattress in the past 34 years of marriage and this sleep number bed is the greatest!

I like the fact that I can adjust my side to how I like it and my husband can adjust his side to how he likes it. Plus you can adjust it each day if you like. I usually don't, but if I have had a more physical day I will adjust it for the night.

My friend wanted a larger size bed, but lived in an older house with 90 degree stair cases. This was the perfect solution for her, the bed comes in pieces and you assemble.

They have great phone support if needed also. We took the bed apart to recarpet the room and were having trouble reassembling the bed, called support. (WE had a couple of the steps reversed).
Another time we could not get it to hold air; called support and they helped us fix the problem (very minor).

I would like to upgrade to some of the newer models they have now

It is one of the best purchases we have made!!!!

My elderly parents have had one for several years, they both love it and say it has helped with their back pain.

One more coment, we have taken ours apart at least 5 times (to paint, carpet, and repostiion). We bought the one that fits in a waterbed frame, Califorinia King. We have a small bedroom and I wanted to keep the drawers under the bed.

Just wanted to add that we have one and we love it also. I was nervous about the big price tag but for us it was so worth it! Good luck with this decision!

Thanks so much to all who replied. I love input and different perspectives. It makes me feel better about making a big decision. I hope we reach a decision within a weeks time. I will update this post with what we decide. Also, about the temperpedic, we did consider it. We heard 2 big drawbacks, one is that it's very hot and doesn't let your body breathe. Two, rolling over feels like such a battle since you're already nestled in the foam.

I had read that there are problems with mold with the sleep number beds (because of the air that is pumped into the bed).

Do a search on Sleep Number Mold and see what comes up. I just did a google search on this (Sleep Number Mold) and a lot of hits came up, even a few showing there was a law suit.

We opted for a "tempurpedic" style bed from Overstock.com and while it is not perfect, some flaws, I love it. It is not as hot as the tempurpedic can become when sleeping on it, and I found if I buy high thread count sheets (1000 TC), it is JUST FINE!
We bought the really high one, I think 14 inches or someting like that..and I feel like the Princess and the Pea when I get in bed. LOL

We also only paid $700.

They have different sizes, but here is the link in case you are interested. Just do a search for the size you want. 14-inch Pillow Top Cal. King Memory Foam Mattress from Overstock.com

We did a free trial a few years ago through QVC and hated it. Must be in the minority because when the UPS man came to pick it up he was very surprised - he said he heard a lot of great things from other people he delivered the beds to. DH is a big guy so he felt that his side was too small and neither of us could settle on a "sleep number". Recently we stayed in a Radisson, where they have Sleep Number beds, and we still didn't like the bed. Overall I really felt like I was sleeping on a glorified air mattress.

We have one, all four kids have one and we even have their sofe bed in the front room. We love them. DH is a big guy - and has never had issues. I like it softter - him firmer we could adj. when I was preggers. The company is good about working out issues (our middle foam broke down around 5 years old) and they fixed it for free (overnight shipping to) even though it was out of warranty. I have heard they are good for about 10 years (which we are coming up on)...

I've never had one but heard many mixed reviews!
my brother loves it but his wife hates it! many that I have talked to said it is great if you are a side sleeper but not so great if you are a back or stomach sleeper!
we have concidered it but with the mixed reviews I still don't know!
