HELP!!! Vets, Veterinary Techs, Dog owners!!

Please help! I just gave my dog a Heartgard pill and found out that DH had given him one last night but didn't write it down on the calendar. Should I be calling the vet? Can too many be toxic? I'm really concerned, but of course, don't want to call on a holiday because of the cost (and I really don't want to call if I don't need to). But I will, if I need too.

What do you think? I'm thinking they can't be that toxic, but I'm not really sure. Anyone know anything for sure?????

THANKS!

We use Interceptor for Heartworm treatment and I did the same thing once and he should be fine. We have two dogs and I accidentally gave it to one dog twice instead of one to each dog. The vet said it was no big deal. Of course, I was down to my last two, so I had to go buy a new pack the next day for the dog that didn't get one, ugh, a month sooner than expected. She had no type of side effects at all.

I work at a vet hospital

You don't mention what breed your dog is. Some breeds of Collies have shown sensitivity to heartgard.

Heartgard is safe to take in multiple quantities. It is not toxic. It is not uncommon for pets to get hold of that box and eat the entire thing. Please call your doctor's office to let them know so they can log it in his medical history, but rest assured it is safe.

Here is a snip from the site referencing collies, which have been linked to concerns (link above):

HEARTGARD demonstrated no signs of toxicity at 10 times the recommended dose[/b] (60 mcg/kg) in sensitive Collies. Results of these trials and bioequivalency studies, support the safety of HEARTGARD products in dogs, including Collies, when used as recommended.

Thanks everyone. I've been watching Max like a hawk and haven't seen anything unusual.

I tried calling the number on the package, but they are closed for the weekend. I forgot to mention that we aren't using the real HeartGard, but a generic call Iverthart Plus (which was recommended by the vet as a cheaper alternative to HeartGard).

My dog is not a true collie. He is supposedly half Australian Shepherd and half Huskie. (At least that's what they told us at the shelter when we adopted him.) I think he's Border Collie. Does that count as a collie???

Yes, I believe it does. I don't believe he is any danger just the same. Have you been able to reach the company or your vet yet?

I am surprised to hear that your vet charges you for info. We have used the same vet office for more than 20 years and I was never charged for a telephone call. Do most places do this? I hope your doggie is ok.

I did find information on the company's website which said it was safe even at 16 times the normal doseage. The dog is fine, no side effects or anything.

No, I didn't mean that I'd be charged for the phone call, I just thought if I needed to take him in, there'd be an extra charge since it was a holiday.

If your dog is part Australian Shepherd and part Huskie, he is not a Border Collie. A Border Collie is a breed just like a Labrador is a breed. And, no, a Border Collie does not count as a Collie. A Border Collie is smaller than a Collie.
